As a people I frankly think that we have degenerated rapidly going by what has been happening in Benin city of late.University graduates are expected to be found worthy both in learning and character before being admitted to either The Bachelors degree or what ever academic qualification the graduate has pursued. The terribly base and profane language that has been spewing out of the mouths of so called university graduates from our institutions connote much indeed.Just take enough pains to go through the Nigerian Observer Opinion pool of late to enable you understand the gravity of the debasement we have been suffering.

The quality of our thoughts will determine the state of our development. From the look of things we seem to be more interested in our stomach and genitals and not how to make our mark on the international arena by meaningfully contributing towards the advancement of the human race. The cult graduates are nothing but an unadulterated product of the Nigerian society.A Greek philosopher whose name I can't remember once said that a people get the kind of leadership they deserve. If cult members have infiltrated positions of authority in the country, the fault is in ourselves , not in our stars. From the look of things, there is no section of the society today that has not been contaminated by cult members.Be it those recruited from the institutions of higher learning or the traditional cults. It seem to be a thing of pride for a man in a position of authority to be identified with a cult or some thing of the sort, such as the so called social clubs and societies. This has in no small way responsible for the advancement of mediocrity and backwardness in our society, among other terribly serious things.

As a people, I believe that if we are to see the promised land, we must be prepared to take the bull by the horn squarely. The present socio political order of the country will lead us nowhere than unmitigated disaster.Benin City of the 60s is certainly radically different from what it is today.I am not suggesting that we should stagnate.No.That is not my wish ,my love for customary practices and traditions notwithstanding.

Let us take a good look at the Islamic Republic of Iran .Before 1979 when the Shah was in power, the country was virtually like modern day Nigeria, probably the only difference is the huge military hardware at their disposal. After their revolution in '79, the entire nation was radically transformed and today, The Islamic Republic of Iran is a Nation to be feared even by the United States.

For the present predicament we find ourselves to be remedied, some people must die for others to live.Christians believe that Jesus died to enable those who believe in Him to gain everlasting life. But those to die for The country to be cleansed will lay their lives not in the manner of Christ, but in the fashion of what took place in Ghana when Jerry Rawlings was in Power. If what goes up will surly come down, why can't what took place in Ghana be repeated in Nigeria? If vultures are meant to be eaten as food our ancestors would have exhausted them.If the present moral degeneration we are been subjected to by our so called ruling class is the normal standard way of behavior, it should have been an integral part of our heritage.

Today, we live in fear of bondage and bondage of fear but, our salvation lies in our hands. We have the option to either make or mar our future and our very existence.I am of the point of view that the present ruling class in the country must be toppled if we are to see the promised land. We should be tired of saying that we are tired.

A TYPICAL REPLY WAS THIS

I would want to commend you for your beautifully worded comment on the very sad situation in Benin City of recent. The criminals who call themselves cultists are neither undergraduates students nor graduates. They are the thugs of one political party or the other whose illegal means of livelihood have been taken from them.
However, you most times end your comments with certain thoughts that are not congruous with democratic principles.Iran you gave example with is not democratic. The leaders are both despotic and theocratic, therefore, not good enough as a country to be used as a standard.
You appeared to be happy the other day with the kidnap of the registrar of the ICE.That too is not n line with civilised principles.
I would want you to be a member of our NGO to fight the ills of our society. So, please get in touch curtismike14@yahoo.com
