Do I Pay Or Not To Publish My FYP? by simiolu1(m): 11:39pm On Jul 13, 2015
I'm a serving Corper. Studied Physics in the University and did a project on ZnO Thin Films.

I and my partner worked our butt off for the project and spent a considerable amount of money, time and other resources to get it done. One of the motivating factors for me was that I really needed an A in it to make a Second Class Upper.

When the project was almost finished, my Supervisor informed me he would love to Publish a paper on it. I guess he was impressed with the quality of work we did (even though we made some errors along the way).

It's been over a year now since I finished school and this afternoon, I read an e-mail from my Supervisor (which was sent 7 days ago) informing me that he has reviewed the paper (which I wrote by the way), made necessary corrections and chances are it's going to be published soon. I was elated until I read the next paragraph/sentence which requested for 10,000naira as payment for my name to be part of the authors. And that I have 3weeks to make the payment (one week has already elapsed).

I was shocked to say the least and was honestly furious at first. However, I just went online and discovered that people pay to publish their research in journals.

Now this is my dilemma. I'm currently fiddling with the idea of a Master's degree and I know that having my name as an author on that paper if published would go a long way. I also know that it'll look good on my CV and create a good impression to potential employers.

But I'm cash strapped and my meager allawee isn't helping matters.

What do I do nairalanders? I need your matured advice. Thanks

Please, I think you should just pay, going to court will be more expensive.

It will help in your masters degree admission (especially if you want it abroad )

Just try and discuss with your supervisor. Any published paper with your name on it either as a first or second author would definitely increase your chances for admission.

Thanks but I never said I wanted to go to court. Because I know journals ask for payment before they publish papers. Elsevier costs as much as 3k dollars

Thank you. I've not gotten back to him because of my state of mind yesterday. And by the way, I'm going to be a third author!

Is your partner interested? Also, how much do you want to publish? I think if you nurse the vision of a postgraduate building around project makes sense. However, be careful so you do not loose the supervisor who can serve as a reference for you in the near future.

My partner sounds interested. But apart from giving a verbal interest, his actions have been unreliable.
D estimate my supervisor gave me was at least 10k per author (there are 4 authors). So that's about 40k. I don't think I can foot the bill alone and he has definitely added some touches to the paper to Behind it.
It's a mess really and anytime I think about it, I just get confused. Would send him a mail tho, asking him why he has decided to postpone publishing it now. Thanks for your interest, I really appreciate your support.

You are welcome. I may not know as much science as Teempakguy and Robinhez but I have to contribute my little quota.

Jeebz, stingy, msnas, xfire, teempakguy, robinhez etc make una come o. Paper has finally been published! I'm so happy, joyful and emotional. All the hard work has finally paid off. I couldn't believe the quality of the material when I read it. Obviously, my supervisor did a wonderful job editing, reviewing and carrying out further tests on the samples. See attached pix below

I have read the paper and I'm impressed. Your supervisor did a great job. Also, you got second author which is very good. Now, you can decide your fate, no postgraduate school would turn down an application with a strong research portfolio.

Yay! *dancing shakiti* I noticed that I got second author but didn't know the implications. Also when I glanced through the paper I noticed it had been beefed up. But I still retain credit for typing the original manuscript. Doing the foundation research and even reading as much as 40 papers before I finished writing the project.

Make una wish me happy birthday o

Hello, there
find out what Journal is it going to be published in?
what are the requirements for publishing in the journal from the Editor?
what is the circulation spread of the journal?
how long does it take for the submitted work to come out in the journal?

if every thing sounds positive then go ahead.
