The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) at the 2015 Combined Policy Meeting which was held on July 14, 2015 in Abuja, JAMB announced the adoption of a new eligibility policy whereby prospective candidates of a universities with very high number of  applicants for the Unified Matriculation Examinations (UTME) are redistributed to other universities with lower number of applicants.

According  JAMB registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, the new policy portends two benefits.

It will be beneficial to “needy Universities” that is universities with lower number of candidates than their capacities, as this will ensure that these universities will have more candidates to admit.

Candidates will have better chances for admission in the universities they are re-assigned to, contrary to situations where they would await admission in the universities of their first choices until the admission exercise closes and they forfeit admission in that session.

This policy has been implemented with immediate effect. And is currently being used to determine eligibility of candidates to write the Post-UTME in their respective choice institutions.

I would like to know which universities have a lower number of applicants, because to the best of my knowledge, such universities are more likely to be situated in the north (not ABU or some other ones though).

Places like Unimaid or universities in the extreme northern borders, might not have as many applicants as other schools, due to the activities of you know who.

In addition, the new federal universities might also not have as many applicants regardless of location? Just guessing here.

I guess I now understand why some go to Ghana or other universities in different parts of Africa, I wondered about that before.
