At such times when jobs aren't easy to come by in this part of the world, people will do all they can to keep their jobs once it has been secured. Do/Can you blame them? Despite the shouts of embracing self-employment and entrepreneurship, a majority are still dead-scared of the uncertainty and risk that lies with such. Get a good grade and degree, go for your Masters, and secure a job in Shell. Stay put for 25 years, retire and start getting your pension. Very easy! Innit? But some people will always break such status quo no matter what. And such is Olamide Adedeji aka baddo. You might not like his music or his personality, but you should not hate his success story because it's far from uninspiring.

Before the young man became a household name, he was once a backup artiste for another rapper, Seriki. He could have just stayed back to become a Yes-man up till date. But he didn't. He went ahead to groom his skills and talents, securing a deal with I.D Cabasa's coded tunes in the process. Not satisfied with that, few years later, he went ahead to set up his record label company. And now he has other acts under him. He is easily the most consistent and hardworking artiste and should also make the list of top 5 most successful artistes in the Nigerian music industry. For real, this crazy guy should be a case study in Nigerian universities. We aren't looking at his music; we are looking at his story. And here are lessons we can all learn:


NEVER SETTLE FOR LESS


A lot of his peers chose to just follow the popular artistes around and do backup forever. At least, you get paid and enjoy some attention too. He didn't. Never ever settle for less. Don't just sit put with your boss and keep waiting till you get promoted all the time. Think and act on being on your own. Take the risk, it wouldn't be an easy walk, but you are most likely to succeed.


DREAM BIG! AS IN, VERY BIG


Coded tunes at that time had 9ice, Lord of Ajasa, Reminisce, Jah Bless and a host of others. Cabasa was one of the biggest and known producers too. Getting signed to such label would have been the biggest dreams ever for the typical upcoming artiste. But that was only a starting point for Ola baby. Dude only dropped an album, hit limelight and then took the decision to set up his own movement. He now wishes the same for his own signees. Who knows what other big dreams that boy have got?


BE THE BEST


Maybe he is not my favorite rapper, but he is easily one of the best around. Put aside his style or lyrics. You can't count 5 others that have such excellence in the music industry. Do you know what it takes to be the best? Dude says he has nothing else but music. His passion and drive ...gosh!!! If only you can discover your talents, harness a skill, learn a trade and then become very passionate about it. If only.


COMBINE SMARTWORK AND HARDWORK


In terms of hip-hop, and being a purist, I can decide to argue that Olamide isn't doing real hip-hop. He sings, he uses autotunes, his concepts are weird... But who cares? Dude is just being smart. Giving the people what they want! Catchy and melodious vibes every time as opposed to the expected punchlines, wordplays and other accepted standards of "hip-hop and rap". It's nothing but being smart. The results are there for other rappers to see. You can always depart from the norm in your field and be smart. It doesn't hurt!
