Yimu... undecided
I cant see the head.
It is closer in shape and markings to a snake in the constrictor family.
Mynd44:

Because it is a viper. From the sight, the shape of the head, the size of the body and the color.

It is a viper. Crazily dangerous buggers

I think it should be behind that big tree where there are lots of snakes behind your house.

Short Python. Manumanu in Yoruba, Eke in Igbo.
Re: See The Snake That Was Killed This Night In My Lodge by Nobody: 7:17am On Aug 27, 2015
You don't actually need to see the head before concluding which specie of snake it is. Gaboon vipers are quite easy to identify; first of all they appear to look like dwarf pythons, I think the maximum length you can find is 1.8m, pythons grow way longer than that. However, the easiest way to identify them is the pattern on their body; Gaboons have this characteristic zig zag pattern on its side which runs the entire length of its body. The way the bulkiness of its midsection tappers abruptly at its tail is also another tell tale sign
Thanks
eaglechild:
All those shouting viper, you did not see the head and you are jumping to conclusions.

You cannot for sure say that it is a viper without seeing the head.
It may well be a young python, their markings look alike, besides pythons are much commoner.

This could be the same specie with that your so-called snake.

In Orlu area of Imo state, it is not poisonous - never bites. It is called "Eke Ukwu." If it dares enter your house, you take it away to the roadside.
God will bless you for that. It's a shame most people can't differentiate venomous snakes from non-venomous ones. They just go ahead and kill it for sports

One rule of thumb for Vipers identification, they look like pythons but the colours and markings ain't exactly the same..short,stocky and MEAN..
Since Theo Look like pythons, don't you think that's a baby python?
Are Vipers that common in Nigeria?

vipers are usually short and fat but the tail area thins out suddenly
Is that enough reason to call it a viper? I'm not doubting you. But some pythons could have such characteristics too

That's a diamond bark Gaboon viper. It's the snake with the longest fangs in west africa. One solid bite from this creature and the tight knot of your mama's wrapper around your leg won't stop the venom from flowing through.

So we get this kind snake for Nigeria? I wish I never see it or any snake sef

Young pythons have that same description.

For you to say that is a viper from that picture is nothing short of magic.

Vipers are very rare.

Most of what people brand viper are young pythons.
