Kennydoc:

The hospital bill came to 285k. It includes the cost of drugs, tests, bed fee for the number of night she was admitted, and other expenses, not just the CS alone.

I don't blame the management at all. My MD was telling me today of how our hospital is being currently owed over 5-10 million naira in 3 years. It's a Fertility hospital in Abuja, so many of our patients do IVF, and those that succeed may choose to continue antenatal with us. Some fail to pay up their bills after their course of treatment or surgery. Some owe up to 400k and other outrageous debts.

In some hospitals in Abuja, CS costs up to 1 million naira. In my centre, it's about 450k outside the drugs, lab tests, bed fee, nursing care, paediatrician's review etc. Most couples end up paying over 650k before discharge.
You're shouting about 200k for CS, are you aware that the hospital has doctors, nurses, lab scientists, pharmacists, admin staff, cleaners, security men etc who are on their payroll, and have to be well paid?
Where are they supposed to get money from, to pay all these staff?

We read a few days ago of a fashion designer (Elizade's daughter) that charges 700k for one clothing material. Musical artists and comedians charge millions per show of usually not more than 20 mins, yet it becomes a crime for a doctor to charge for his sweat after saving lives.
Some of you guys talk out of so much ignorance.
no mind some people jhoorm...they think its easy to run medical centres ....the couples should hve gone to public hospitals ...its annoying how people here are blaming the hospital?..whereare the goin to see money for workes salary?...not from pity

Health care is goddamn expensive, and to get Good healthcare you'll have to drop an arm and a leg for good measure. However, people are not ready to pay and most cannot even afford it.
The overhead cost of running a hospital especially one where you have to source for your own power generation is extremely high.
The lady should have registered in a government hospital, which you still have to pay but probably not as expensive as a private hospital.
Anyway, no use crying over spilt milk. Since the matter has reached here, those that would like to help her offset her bills can do so. There should be an address of the hospital somewhere.
Nevertheless, chaining her to a urinal sounds exaggerated though and if its true then that was too too wrong

Even if it's a private hospital there are still things the hospital have to compromise. Common, what are we saying. 300k is damn too much for any cs no matter the complications.

The truth is we can't afford to continue paying our health bills from our pockets, except you are rich. People keep saying stuffs about doctors and nurses. Except for India, medical treatment and drugs are expensive elsewhere. Staff must get paid. Doctors don't get free tomato in the market. They have to pay. Besides, pharmcists also need money for their drugs, and some can be expensive. Until money is pumped into the health sector, it will continue to be in a state where low-income people are handed a death sentence when sick...We need affordable quality health insurance

This type of incident is when you ask questions like:

These hospitals' photo shown in political campaign flyer or their mouth-watering political speech before the media; where can these hospitals be geographically located?

To me, the act is sardonic, catastrophic, wickedness in the highest order, bisima bisima, eminado eminado, et al.

Let me rest my case before this English teachers start asking questions...if am related to this Edo grammatical abracadabara orator...

i remember when i gave a pxt credit facility to see a cardiologist, and he took his whole family for check up. His bill came back to almost a million naira. That's including his previous outstanding. I was in big trouble for the next few weeks.

When hospitals don't attend to patients, due to the risk of non - payment, people would blame the hospital for lack of compassion.
When the hospital attends to the patient and still not get paid, it's still the hospitals fault.
When does the fault become that of the non - paying patient or the government?

That's a generous thought but how long do you think before your hospital will last before you go bankrupt and have to close down.

My uncle is a doctor and his hospital never made much headway due to abeg sir, next month etc. That didn't pay his children's school fees.

Flashh:
And where is her husband or relatives?

When I have my own private hospital I won't treat my patients this way.

BTW... They supposed to have planned for this already, 9 months is enough to fish for the bills.

Hmmm. So the husband is unemployed and the wife goes to a private hospital for delivery? Why please? And when you go to hospital in Ikotun, are you not supposed to pay? Whether private or public? And now owing money since August 12th? I think this woman go thief pass those politicians o!

Anyway we should hear the other side of the story before judgement. But the woman story no impress me at all. Reading it, my first thought was why would they operate someone who don't have money. But since the story is that baby died, maybe it was emergency. So maybe they saved her life. Now her gratitude is to say she has no money to pay. Daris God sha.

The part that bothers me is that this experience will affect the rest of us. Most private hospitals i have attended always ask for money before service, so i am surprised this one didn't. So now that she didn't pay, will the hospital allow other people to owe next time? Or will they send mother and baby away to go and manage themselves at home or in a quack facility?

These folks are playing the pity card. There's no private hospital where you won't be told of price before they operate. You even have to give both verbal and written consent. People come here to show their ignorance, forgetting a business transaction occurred and you have to pay for services rendered. Even in government hospitals, you won't go till you pay and if the wards becomes full, they sit you out of bed till you are able to pay. And someone was wondering how a cs costs that much. It's quite funny, when even in some hospitals, a normal delivery's over that amount.

This is a single story and believe me, there's more to this. My few years in private practice has afford me a lot of experience about patients. Ppl can be very funny and can turn things around to make you regret your good deeds. The fact that she had an emergency CS done without paying a penny to the hospital prior to the surgery is enough to praise the management of that hospital. 300k to much for the services rendered? To me, this is too cheap. They are not aware of how much they were going to pay prior to the surgery? This is hilarious, the person that signed the consent form would have at least been informed about the procedure, the possible outcome and the financial implication.

Those are the first set of people to attack the hospital management when she can't pay salaries.
Hospitals, any private business whatsoever is set up solely for profit purpose.

Though the hospital should have told them the cost of CS before proceeding.

Even though this is a one sided story, I only see callousness on the side of the woman and the husband. Many questions came to my mind from reading this story....

How come we did not see the woman tied to the Urinal pipe, or chain marks on the hand that was tied to the urinal?
Did the hospital management release her to take this picture or she has always looked like this even before the incident?

If the man is saying nobody discussed fees with them, How come we did not read that they offered the hospital a token sum that they thought would cover the treatment? Or is he saying he thought CS in a private hospital would be free?

Some people just like to play the "rich oppressing the poor" card too much. poverty is not an excuse for stupidity.

...exactly. He has to pay it. There was the option of going to a govt hospital. Eeyah, this case is pathetic 'if true', but who is to blame? The couple had the option of govt hospital. But the poverty level in Nigeria is very high, you'll be surprised when some women can't even afford to pay N200-500 at a PHC after delivery or even come to the hospital to deliver with next to nothing, I don't know if they expect the Drs and nurses to pay out of their pocket for the delivery and even materials needed. And when they are delayed and told to get the materials, they start going about saying these professionals are wicked. They had 9 months to prepare for goodness sake, she shld have registered ante-natally at a govt hospital and gone there at the first sign of labor, we all know our financial capabilities, if u can't afford a private hospital, don't go there.
