Dangerous Bill Before National Assembly by Nobody: 5:10am On Apr 22, 2009
The EFCC has initiated a very dangerous bill before the National Assembly that allows it to confiscate property of an accused who is brought before a court. This is bill if passed is going to be prone to abuse by the Efcc. Watever happened to innocent until proven guilty?.They could just wake up one day and make spurious charges against anyone in the country and confiscate his property and take note some cases take years before a verdict is reached. If the accused property is seized how will he be able to pay his lawyers. I want to know who comes up with all these bills.

Freaking good idea. The principle behind this bill is to deny corrupt persons the ability to use their ill gotten wealth to fight the authorites.

The EFCC has been accusing the judiciary of delaying cases thereby frustrating the EFCC efforts at dealing with corrupt officials. This bill therefore, to me,  is borne out of that frustration. Seizing the property of an accused even before the accused is convicted is not legal and I don't support it. Rather, EFCC and the judiciary should ensure that cases are tried promptly and any one found guilty of corruption should have his money and property confisticated commensurate to the misappropriated amount (either cash or kind).

Could this bill be construed to mean that EFCC has become zealous at tackling corruption in the country in line with the rebranding process?
