Fellow nairalanders,

The search for job is overwhelming and giving me sleepless nights, therefore I'll like people to give me ideas on how I can get internship placement so I won't continue to be idle.

I checked few places and even called some companies to make enquiries on internship position but I keep getting negative response.

I am a graduate of English literature building a career in HR practices, I recently completed my post graduate course work. I discovered lack of work experience is playing a major role in me not getting a job and so I've decided to get intern job.
Am open to suggestions. Thanks.

Have you tried NGOs? I believe they'll be willing to absorb you for the time being. However, it may boil down to your expectations in terms of remuneration amongst other preconceived factors.

You may also want to have individuals skilled in the art of reviewing resumes to help you review your resume and cover letter and make them look more presentable. The internet can also come in handy to this end. It can also aid you with interview tips, aptitude tests prep materials and so on. So, take advantage of it.

In addition, always do well to stand out from the crowd; from things like the kind of paper you use in printing out your resume (if need be) to your exhibition of etiquette amongst other things.

Lastly, never underestimate the importance of networking and prayer. They work! Pay your tithes (no matter how little) and tell Him what you desire. May the Almighty bless your hustles and grant you what's best.

Thanks a lot for this, I'll work on the NGO part and others asap.

Can you please expantiate or give new ideas on the third paragraph, talking about standing out and etiquettes. Thanks.

Don't work yourself out dear. Everyone knows that the most difficult step of a fresh graduates career is getting his/her first job or entry level job if your father is not the Senate President because with limited or no work experience, it’s quite challenging to make an immediate impression on employers and getting invited to that all important first interview. However on a positive note its worth remembering that everyone has to start at the beginning. Workers with 5-10 years experience din’t suddenly appear out of thin air, they all needed an entry-level job to launch their careers.

Note that an entry level resume is suitable when applying for your first ever job and job applicants should use one to give a complete picture of themselves, they should go beyond simply showing what is required by an employer and instead demonstrate how to make a real difference to their company. Place a great deal of emphasis on what you know, and what you've accomplished, rather than where you've worked.

So to get around this popular song, focus on how to translate your school/academic accomplishments into experiences and skills that employer’s value in your entry level resume. Highlight those accomplishments that exemplify the skills you possess with the ones the employer is seeking in the job Ad by communicating transferable skills without having to list your career history.

* Work on converting your academic achievements to look like job related experience.
* Clearly explain what you know, what you've accomplished, and the skills you possess.
* Project the right image of your experience and knowledge.
* Make sure that your most important information stands out.
* Have your entry level resume sent out to a professional resume writer for review before sending it to the HR.

Hope this helps... *Bighug
