As a result of reason i or everyone else does not know, most youths of this generation have lost the zeal to work hard.this is the true situation in nigeria but that of some parts of niger-delta is more worrisome.the  issue of re-orientation may be the key to solving the problem.presently i have my sister serving as a teacher in bayelsa state that gave me the info about their experiences in the hands of students.once you are not from bayelsa, you are looked upon as someone that came to collect money from bayelsa.youths should be brought up to know that bayelsa is poor.oil is not wealth.education, health and technology is wealth.it is not reserved for particular families.if you cant school,go for apprenticeship and government will help you.an investor is very important.you cannot develop by being hostile and kidnapping high profile investors.youths demand ransome from contractors handling developmental projects, sell their indigenous slots in oil companies to non-indigenes and later turn around to accuse the non-indigenes of dominance.i'm from an oil producing community but my parents taught me to work hard and earn my living.the parents of these small boys should be prosecuted for failing to train their children properly.i know so many successful people from bayelsa.are those people not suffering thesame marginalisation?

[b]How police, soldiers burnt Abala community witness (1)

It was more like a commando operation, a repeat of the Odi massacre when soldiers stormed and set the place on fire. But this time around, it happened in Abala autonomous community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State. However, police and the community are trading words over who takes responsibility for this crime against humanity. Whereas the community is blaming the police and soldiers, the police, on the other hand, insist they had nothing to do with carnage. In this interview with Correspondent, Ben Duru, an eyewitness who doesn't want his picture printed, Nnenna Udo, traced the root of the crisis to the time the police and soldiers stormed the community. Excerpts:

Could you tell us what happened in your community recently?

Last Wednesday about 4 O'clock in the evening, we were in the village, Abala autonomous community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, I travelled home. Actually, I travelled home on Tuesday evening and in the morning I saw the villagers running to every direction in confusion. I asked them what was happening, but no one stopped to answer me, they kept running in different direction. I now discovered that policemen and soldiers were gathered everywhere, burning houses. So, everyone in the village fled to different directions.

What actually did you see?

I saw the policemen and soldiers setting houses on fire. Before that day the policemen and soldiers were trailing a gang of armed robbers, passing through the area to a nearby community. If you know Abala community very well, it is like a roundabout with one road leading to Akwa Ibom State and the other leading to Ukwa Local Government, that is, Azumiri, Akirika and the one leading to Abala. So, they were trailing these armed robbers. Before the police came we saw many vehicles passing through the village and within a short time we also saw police vehicle following the vehicles used by the armed robbery suspects. About four in the evening we started hearing gunshots everywhere and people started running in confusion. People thought there was an invasion of the village nearby, because it was so serious that even where we were staying people were already fleeing. The following day police and soldiers came and started burning houses.
About how many houses were burnt on that day?

The houses the police and soldiers burnt were more than 50, especially in my own area. In my compound, we had three buildings burnt; my father owns two and my uncle one. These buildings, including the kitchen the police and soldiers burnt all. The thing is too much to understand. You see people who stored oil in drums in their houses; everything went up in flames. The house of an Assistant Commissioner of Police from the area was also burnt; another storey building belonging to a popular businessman based in Aba was completely razed to the ground. This man deals in building materials and had some of his materials in the house; everything was totally burnt. Houses that belong to important men in the village were also completely burnt, and the worse thing was that most of these people were not around when this thing happened. Nobody knew what the police and soldiers were going to do, we suddenly saw them and immediately they entered the village they started to setting the buildings ablaze. Properties worth billions of naira were lost because majority of the people, especially the important people in our community were not around when the burning started.
Did anybody in the village get to know why the police and soldiers embarked on this action?

We don't know, and the police and soldiers did not tell us anything. In fact, immediately they entered the village they started shooting in different directions to scare everybody away. As the people were running for dear life, the police and soldiers began to set the buildings on fire, nobody had the courage to stop and ask why they were doing what they were doing, because we believed that with the way they entered the village anybody who tried to question them would be killed instantly. They destroyed everything, from household property to cash crops, goats, fowls everything around especially those belonging to those who rear their goats and chickens inside their compounds. But all we know is that the police were trailing criminals the previous day, but both the criminals and the police did not stop in our village. If you want to see the police, I can lead you there, so you can understand what I am talking about. Where the police and the armed robbery suspects engaged in shooting is very far from our village. We knew there was a shoot-out because we saw the vehicles of the armed robbery suspects when they were passing, but we did not then except when we immediately saw the police vehicles also trailing them, with up to five patrol vans and it was after sometime that we started hearing gunshots and the whole village began to flee in confusion. The following day we heard that police vehicles were burnt and the criminals made away with some money.

Nigeria: Sylva Laments Sale of Employment Slots
Samuel Oyadongha
19 December 2008

Share:
GOVERNOR Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State has expressed dismay over the practice of selling employment slots to non-indigenes by youths of the state at give-away prices.

At an interactive session with the Bayelsa State Elders Consultative Forum, the governor lamented the development, saying "it is saddening to note that indigenes of the state are selling their employment slots in reputable companies at give-away prices of between N20,000 and N70,000."

The governor, who gave a graphic description of the thinking of an average Bayelsan, noted with sadness that they wanted everything free, bearing in mind that the state remains the only state throughout the federation where the electricity is generated free.

His words, "An average Bayelsan has also believed erroneously that we have money and that is why they want everything for free. In the education sector we pay nothing.

The craze now is that everybody wants their children to be sent abroad by the government for free. In the health sector we pay for nothing, everybody is expected to be treated for free.

The electricity we produce is for free. Even nobody wants to work; they prefer handouts. "When I first came as governor, my belief was very different.

My belief was that if you create jobs, people benefits from those jobs. And one of the things when I came in was that I paid all contractors that were on site. I paid N900 million and we decided to complete all on-going projects before we plan new ones.

"The idea was to stimulate the economy so that our people can do small jobs. And I was happy when I paid the money and there were many people working on the site. I went to those sites personally because there were still a lot of complaints on the streets on Yenagoa.

sites personally that more than 500 people working on the sites they were all non-Bayelsans. I asked if there was any Bayelsan, there was none and I was shocked. That was when I know we have a problem. Because no matter how much you tried to stimulate the economy it would fly over the Bayelsan because our youths won't work.

"I would give you another example - the community around Saipem protested that they were not being given jobs. We intervened and Saipem decided to give 70 quality jobs to boys from that community.

The community nominated people to go and work there and I was happy that through our intervention we were able to create the jobs. Later I saw one of the boys and questioned him why he is not at work.

"I later found out upon enquiry that he sold his space to an Igbo man for N40, 000 a month out of the N 70,000 he is being paid and that is what all of them did. They sold all their spaces to Igbo people. You would send Bayelsans for training through oil companies; they sell their spaces to Igbo people and those acquire the necessary skills.

They are happier to be on the streets of Yenagoa claiming every day that there is hunger. There is no economy that can grow like this. It is a very sad situation." Earlier, the chairman of the forum, Chief Francis Doukpolagha had called on the government and the elders in the state to map out developmental programmes that would be aimed at improving the lots of the people in the state.

Police arraign 11 for 419

May 20, 2009 10:29AMT

The police have arraigned 11 persons suspected to be members of a 419 syndicate at an Abuja Chief Magistrate's Court on a three-count charge of being in possession of fake U.S. dollars.

Those arraigned are Emeka Onuzulike, Anthony Sunday, Ifeoma Ani, Victor Adendum, Onyeka Okonkwo, Esther Akpen and John Akpen all of Jabi, Abuja.

Others are Ikechukwu Chukwu, Kenneth Uzoma, Samson Emmanuel and Obiora Olisa of Airport Road, Abuja. They pleaded not guilty to the charge and urged the court to grant them bail.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Sunday Ochimana granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 each with a reasonable surety, who must be a Grade Level 12 officer with landed property in the FCT.

The police prosecutor, Corporal Isaac Opanachi, told the court that the accused were arrested for being in possession of counterfeit U.S. dollars and for belonging to group of thieves.

He said one Ogbu Atama and other concerned neighbours had written a petition to the police, alleging that the accused and others now at large, were members of a 419 syndicate operating within the area.

What does your topic say, but you ended up with only Bayelsa (Niger Delta)? What did you say about the other tribes you mentioned in your topic? Is Bayelsa the problem of Nigeria?

This thread is quite old now but I stumbled upon it and laughed at "jona" who instead of analusing the facts tribalised a good thread. We turned out lazy in Nigeria as a result of wicked and selfish leaders.I used Bayelsa as an example because my sister was serving there and "jona" went gaga.Things remain thesame till this day and the kidnapping has now spread almost nationwide.
