Seizure, commonly regarded as "warapa" is a neurological disorder and not a spiritual problem. Pls let's try to jettison our childhood superstitious belief for once..

I just witnessed one not quite long, but to my greatest surprise, most people around evacuated that surrounding .its so painful and dishearting. I couldnt help myself but shed tears with agony.. It was only myself and a brother that stayed with the victim .. After he regained consciousness he spoke with pain and wept like a day old child.. He told us this was the second time it would happen to him. He went further to ask for our assistance for him to buy his drug ( Epanutin) for just 1200naira..
To cut the story short, fellow Nigerians, this can happen to any one of us. Never run away from epileptic patients they are human beings like we do.. Here are things to do when someone develops seizure

.

Tonic seizures
The person goes stiff, loses consciousness and
then falls to the ground. This is followed by
jerking movements. A blue tinge around the
mouth is likely. This is due to irregular breathing.
Loss of bladder and/or bowel control may
happen. After a minute or two the jerking
movements should stop and consciousness may
slowly return.

Do...
1 Protect the person from injury - (remove harmful
objects from nearby)
2 Cushion their head
3 Look for an epilepsy identity card or identity
jewellery
4 Aid breathing by gently placing them in the
recovery position once the seizure has finished
(see pictures)
5 Stay with the person until recovery is complete
Be calmly reassuring

Don't...

1.Restrain the person’s movements
2.Put anything in the person’s mouth
3.Try to move them unless they are in danger
4.Give them anything to eat or drink until they are fully recovered
5.Attempt to bring them round

Call for an ambulance if...

You know it is the person’s first seizure, orThe seizure continues for more than five minutes, orOne tonic-clonic seizure follows another without the person regaining consciousness between seizures, orThe person is injured during the seizure, orYou believe the person needs urgent medical attentionattention

Thank you OP.

I have a very pretty young lady that goes into seizure monthly, sometimes weekly. I've watched her in seizures many times in public; inside danfo bus, on pedestrian bridge, in church, at the beach, etc.

I had to restrain her from the kitchen as she has had many bruises from broken dishes, hot oil, etc during seizure.

The best way to take care of people like that is to show them love, care and understanding. When they are in seizure, just let that moment pass and protect them from injury.

Then after, let then rest well. Pray for them and hug them often. Many of them suffer in silence. Never run away from them!

Nice info op..

By the way, you are talking about epilepsy which is warapa.

Sometimes, having a seizure doesn't necessarily mean the person is epileptic ..
But this info should work for both scenario .

@ Op, Pls is this infectious?
When I was much younger we had quite a handful of school-mates that suffer from this regularly. We were advised not to go close to them or allow the fluid from their body touch us. This we were told was to avoid getting infected by the same epilepsy. Is this true?

You are right Caracta, we have so much misconceptions about epileptic patients that calls for more awareness and orientation of people close to them on how to help and not run away from them when they need their assistance the most when in danger.

One the misconceptions is, people thinking they can get infected with the saliva of the the person in seizure and putting objects in the person's mouth so they wouldn't give up the ghost.

Funny enough, I don't see groups or volunteers standing up for them the way they do for HIV patients, cancer, sickle cell carriers, physically challenged, etc. It's totally unfair. The lady I'm talking about is 28. Imagine living that way for over 20 years. She is an undergrad and all her room mates had to vacate the apartment for her. She has no friend. No boyfriend. No hope of getting married someday. Afraid and depressed.

Btw, how is my little girl doing? It's been a while.

If the bolded part is been observed, their won't be much injury and they will enjoy been alive. sad

But stigmatization and superstition won't allow. May God help us

At the embolden is the challenge they are facing, the government should take the blame the most, the Civil Organizations and the NGO are not doing/showing enough sensitization to the plight of the carriers which is quite sad, hope Lalasticlala will do justice to this thread for more enlightenment of our people.

Really a while, how time flies!

She's doing well and the cry has subsided drastically, thanks so much.

Btw, she's two month old exactly today, oh it's another day already smiley

Thanks OP.

I won't lie, there was a day a lady had it,I jumped out through the window of the class.

I also know of a lady who was cured of it traditionally..

More enlightenment is needed.

Op,please, what are the causes of it,is it heredity?
Re: What To Do When Someone Has A Seizure(pics) by Exmay(m): 5:55am On Nov 24, 2015
Nice one Op.
By the way, what was described above is Tonic Clonic. There are still many other variants of seizure that lots of pple fails to recognize, thus leading to under/mis-diagnoses.
