Babcock University: The Untold Story Of Fraud, Nepotism And Maladministration by jmellons: 8:13pm On Nov 26, 2015
Beneath the accolades, awards and recognitions that has greeted the first approved private university in Nigeria in the past few years’ lies a tone of dirt, sharp practices, maladministration and outright fraud.

Approved in 1999 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a full-fledged university, Babcock University came into prominence at a time when majority of the public tertiary institutions in the country where engulfed in protests from student union bodies and continuous strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which more than often grounds academic activities across public universities in the country, leading students into over-staying the stipulated time for their programme. Parents who were fed up with the epileptic situation in the public institutions had no choice but to either wait till the protest or agitation is resolved or enroll their children in foreign institutions abroad (for those that could afford such).

Then came in Babcock University as the beautiful bride offering not just stable and uninterrupted academic calendar but equips learning facilities (a thing that seems to have eluded the public institutions).

Babcock University was founded by the Seventh Day Adventist Church; a Protestant Christian faith founded by Joseph Bates, James White, Ellen G. White and J.N. Andrews which believe on Saturday as the true biblical Sabbath day. Formally named Adventist Seminary of West Africa (ASWA) -a seminary institution where theology and pastoral education were studied.

Trouble started for the institution in 2003 when it was hit with leadership tussle which led to the forceful retirement of Professor Adekunle Alalade, the pioneer Vice-Chancellor in 2004. After Alalade’s exit, Professor Kayode Makinde was appointed the new Vice-Chancellor. This was the beginning of the trouble.
