Dearth Of No 9 Striker In Super Eagles by 2ru9jaman: 5:32pm On May 27, 2009
When are we going to start discovering natural top striker in super eagles. In those golden days(1991-1994) several deadly No 9 were discovered ,tested and utilised. Mike obiku, chris ohenhen, Richard owobokiri, victor ikpeba, ishaya jatau, and the goal king Rashid yekini. this gave room for competition and nigeria benefited immensely.

If you don't have a natural, standing 9. . . . . . then adopt a more flexible, decentralized system!

True talk. We've not had a natural, reliable 9 since Rashidi. Martins and Yakubu have not been effective. Pitiably, we are lacking in every department. No more formidable midfield. Our traditional wing play has since gone because we've not had effective wingers since Amuneke and Finidi. Utaka, Osaze, Nsofor, Ogbuke and all other current day SE wingers are no where near even Tijani Babangida, much as Osaze is trying.

The recent matches super eagles played are quite encouraging. I can see the emergence of striker like Joseph Apkala,and Emeramo. If we can patiently allow them to mature fully they will deliver.

@ Topic
When I heard it, I felt very bad, it was such a tragic event

martins and yakubu are all good but the problem is that our present eagles have no committments to the team.
if we talk about No 9, in which area of the team is ok? for me, we have only the goalkeeper as the only commited player in our present eagle.

@ CHIDIKRIS
In african setting No. 9 striker need height, strength and good in the air. His shot should be precise and powerful. Right positioning. These qualities are found in Aghahowa, Victor Agali, and Rashidi Yekini. Martins is one of the most hardworking striker we have, his record in cup of nation is not that good, african defenders are terrible, they easily frustrate and pocket him.
yakubu is not bad, but he is not delivering according to work rate of the midfielders. osaze, i.k. uche, and others have complained about this issue.

@2ru9jaman,
u have gud points but do u think the present eagle is comfortable in any department?
with what i see in our today eagles, 5 yekinis will definitely be a flop. remember, yekini lacked skills and speed but he had target. look back, finidi and amuneke were the job men who will do all the works at the flanks and then rolls the ball for a cool finish for yekini.
today, how many such crosses are coming? working hard is one thing and working with target is another thing.
osaze does a lot of runnings but he ends up with a gud try from impossible angles.
there is this lack of team work in the eagles hence the no 9 has to fan his own amber.
u and i know too well that amodu lacks tactics and the players most times are there to play their individual games. there must be reinforcements from the touchline motivating the players. sometimes the coach will ask certain players to start warming up. these are strategies we are lacking. he guy emeramo who played 9 for nigeria against kenya is big and tall yet nothing. we need committments and tactics in the team.

Aiyegbeni might not be too skillful and clinical but check his record for the Eagles he's been scoring goals.
No.9 Strikers are finishers, either clinical, skillfully, theatrically, whateverr get the ball into the net.Aiyegbeni possess such trait he scores playing for Nigeria.

Obafemi is indiscipline, he feigns injury, gives excuses to miss world cup matches.For a professional Player its unbecoming. Agreed he's fast but what he lacks his discipline and commitment. Those are Qualities that make a good footballer even without skills, you go all th way.Go ask Garubal Lawal.

Ikechukwu Uche undoubtedly has shown that with skill and commitment he delivers.With more games and Quality support he 'll score par match.

Joseph Akpalla, Emenaramo are debutant they need more playing time to improve.

There is a striker in Enyimba last season can't recall his name , was top scorer last season' champions league.That guy lacks height but compliments with two blessed foot.He' s fast and can dribble.Some of this home base or African base can do better than Europe based strikers.

We must be at the world cup, we have no excuse.
The Eagles are playing the last stage of the qualifying series and somebody will tell me that players like Martins should be invited if they qualify.

Not all.

@vikiviko & chidchris
    I like your analysis we need to return to wing play of the past , that 's where our strength lies. we have boys that can do it the likes of ik uche, V. nsofor,  Ogbuke and Obafemi martins, and selected player discovered from recent age graded tournament.

All you need is patience. Akpala had been Belgium League highest goal scorer twice
