Our fellow country men the way they  think is very low and shallow. We expect the government to do everything if possible get our wives pregnant and spoon feed us because it is our right. We do not want to contribute to the well being and development of our beloved country.
The government is trying we must not fail to appreciate that.It is not easy to rule a country like Nigeria we are very unruling and we lack manners and decorum.
We have the habit of blaming others for our misfortune, we fail to realise that things don't work out all the time if you fail you try again. You keep trying till you succeed.
We lack planing and forsight.
The basic infrastructures have been provided by the government roads, power not to the fullest capacity but can be improved and industries.
The problem is the citizens all we care about is our selfish interest. The government cannot do everything we have a responsibility to make sure what has been provided we look after it.
Remember Nigeria is still very young it takes time to get to the level of the western world.
A child has to crawl before it can start running.
Nigerians have been brainwashed to think manna will fall from heaven without hard work the Israelites worked hard in the wilderness before manna fell from heaven.
The key to build Nigeria is hard work.
PLEASE STOP BASHING MY COUNTRY NIGERIA.
I LOVE NIGERIA
ONE NIGERIA
WE WILL GET THERE GRADUALLY

Re: The Citizens Are The Problem Of Nigeria Not The Government by desgiezd(m): 10:57am On May 28, 2009
Yes oooo, we as citizens should blame ourselves for all major roads across the country that have gone bad for lack of maintenance, we should blame ourselves because we knew how to do abracadabra and produce electricity and we have refused to do so, we should blame ourselves for our hospitals, educational institutions, railways that have gone bad. We should blame ourselves because we have refused to collect proceeds from sale of petroleum and hide same under our pillows so that our leaders would not have access to them and steal them and we refused to do that. We should blame ourselves because our leaders know good and honest candidates that would hold offices and perform excellently well but decided to hire mediocres, we should blame ourselves because someone like Iwu is still holding office and get emboldened by the presidency and we didn't carry cutlasses, daggers, stones and drive him away from INEC office.

We should blame ourselves because our unruling (unruly) behaviours and lack of manners and decorum have become sedatives to our government and is making the government to sleep-walk thereby resulting in its slow motion. It is also this unruling (unruly) behaviours and lack of manners and decorum that is making Nigeria loosing out in International politics. We should blame ourselves because the country is still young and that is why Ghana, a country that got her independence three years before Nigeria, has surpassed Nigeria in all spheres.

All Nairalanders, please join me in blaming ourselves!!

Re: The Citizens Are The Problem Of Nigeria Not The Government by dnex(m): 12:09pm On May 28, 2009
I see a lot of Nigerians sit around and talk weird stuff.

Someone is trying to tell the truth and everybody pounces on them.

The Nigerian Government, is it not made up of citizens whom before they got into government have already decayed and do not know what governance is about.

Somebody is asking if we should go and drive out the INEC President. No! Be waiting for Ghanaians to come help you drive him away.

A country like Indonesia will remove their president the day they decide his tenure has become boring because they know how to do it. Do you people even know how to effect a change of government in this country? So who is to blame when you don't know how to do what to do?

Ordinary Mauritius have removed a government they felt is not acting right and the guy left because they did it the way it was meant to be done.

In a country like Japan, once the Prime Minister messes up, he will resign. We think It's because they have good leaders but that's a lie. The simple reason is that if they don't resign honourable, the people will remove them disgracefully.

The monumental ignorance of the Nigerian citizenry as to their rights and capabilities is truly overwhelming. So when a fellow abuses these rights, they want to blame Obasanjo and Yar'Adua.

Unions are the tools for the citizens to control, shape or change their democracy, and Obasanjo was the one who put together the first decent union in Nigeria when he was preparing a democracy for us in the 70's. Yet what have we achieved with these unions? Paid strikes, rubbish talk on AIT, and popularity contests for a chance to government house.

Nigerian citizens are wallowing in ignorance. Educated, but unenlightened. The man who knows SHOULD cheat the man who doesn't know in no man's land.

So leave the Nigerian government alone. It's an institution that will be there for thousands of years; It's the citizen that don't know what it is and therefore, they abuse it. They enter into it and corrupt it.

Cheers.

@ud4u

and you are here for your own unselfish interest? I am telling you that these so-called leaders are citizens like you and I that have pursued political offices and gotten them. If they were not selfish and greedy as ordinary citizens, there is no way they'll turn that way just by occupying in office of a civil servant. Look at Alao Akala and you will realise that from the day he was born, he wanted other people's stuff for himself. Are you going to blame Government for that? Government is not a fixed constant thing that you can lay that blame on. Government does not elect government officials, government cannot remove defaulting government officials. Those are the duties and rights of the citizens and the citizens have refused to perform those duties or exercise those rights.

The power is in your hands but you throw it right out the front seat window. You don't know where it is, you don't know where or how to find it, you refuse to know how to find it back, so you just blame the guy you hired to drive the car.

To start with, who elected the so called leaders you are talking? You can't claim you don't know what is going on in Nigeria, where elections are sometimes concluded before the D day proper, and you are there talking about blaming the guy you hired- who hired them?

Secondly, the power you said that is in your hand of course is not in the hands of many Nigerians, because we don’t decide who rules us, what we see here is imposition of leaders on us, therefore it makes mockery of the said power you claimed is in our hands. The just concluded Ekiti re-run is a clear example of it.

You made mention that government can not remove the defaulting government official, so is me and you in nairaland that will remove them abi, you made me laugh. All we could do is to talk and talk and talk and the situation remains the same. How do you think we should perform the rights of citizens when there is no freedom of speech and where government is calling for unity government and does not welcome criticisms, talk too much and get arrested. In Ekiti State a radio station was shut down after the re-run election for political interference. So my friend, tell me how you are going to air your views and remove the defaulting government official, is it inside your room? By talking to your bed and chairs of course it shows that the power is not in our hands.

In Nigeria, government remains the problem and the only channel through which sanity can come into Nigerian system.
Reason remains that if a leader will be upright in his dealings, then he will have time and clear conscience to punish offenders.

If hands are not exchanged (you know) before a contract is awarded of course those that failed to deliver will be queried, prosecuted and the money returned and others will learn their lesson.
So let our leaders lead by example.

How could u blame a nation that produce this kinda human being?
I will admit that we have our share of the blame, but to excuse the govt of the prob is nonsense.
Govt is the only one that cld give some things to the people and make laws that will affect the nation both negatively or positively.

Re: The Citizens Are The Problem Of Nigeria Not The Government by strangleyo: 11:01pm On May 28, 2009
He got a point.

Look at who rigs elections. The governors. But then who makes sure the elections are rigged? The youth, who are the youth? The men who will rig tommorrow's elections.

The men who share looted funds, who are they? Nigerians, not martian. Where do they come from? Nigeria! Who do they loot the funds with? Citizens, who are civil servants. Are civil servants our leaders? No! Then why do they loot too? Because, they are Nigerian.

It all comes back to us as a society. We are bleeped up. Not just Nigeria, all over Africa.

Look at Niger, the president has suspended parliament to become king. Niger, Nigeria, Congo, it don't matter. Same shit different toilet.

Africa needs a Stalin to purge a million people to make us scared to commit crimes.

I have said it before, Government remains the only way through which sanity can come into this country.

If they are upright in their dealings, then they will be bent on punishing the offenders and sanity will come back into the system.

You can not punish offenders when you yourself has commited the same offence and you can not be afraid of government when you know their families and them are commiting the same offence.

You cannot equally querry an unexecuted contract when you have collected your own share, sometimes even before the contract is awarded.

Tell me then how we can move forward in this country in the face of all these lawlessness.
Re: The Citizens Are The Problem Of Nigeria Not The Government by dnex(m): 5:32pm On May 29, 2009
I will stress something here once more, and that is the special word IGNORANCE.

The citizens in Madagascar who changed their government that wasn't upright, do they have 2 heads? Those in indonesia who changed their president simply because his sold his personal cookery videos to a TV station, do the citizens have 4 legs? Those in Argentina who sacked several presidents in a couple of days because the economy was poor, do they have 8 eyes.

When people abandon ignorance for knowledge, you will begin to realise the folly of saying that a handful of people in government denied 140 million Nigerians their rights to make decisions and nothing can be done.

The price for democracy is Eternal Vigilance. If we cannot maintain eternal vigilance or know how or when to take action, then let's go back to the Royal system of rule that our ancestors and our culture is used to.
