Perestroika.

The Nigerian military have in the space of 4 months achieved what it could not do in 6 years – Defeat Boko Haram and reduce its ability to wage war against the Nigerian people. By this time last year the tactical landscape was vastly different. Boko Haram was at its peak. With heavy weapons (some not seen in the Nigerian army inventory), huge numbers and suicidal recklessness the Nigerian army simply melted in the face of this “new kind of enemy”. The Nigerian military, while formidable was completely innefective against the Jihadi group. Trained and doctrined to fight a conventional war the assymetric warfare employed by Boko Haram was simply too much for Nigerian troops to withstand. Like the Iraqi army hundreds off soldiers fled, desertions were rife, complaint about innadequate weapons were rife. Couple that with a weak and clueless Commander in Chief the Nigerian army stood no chance. Boko Haram was as a result able to ceased huge watches of land size of Belguim and had neaarly 2 million Nigerians under its control. They declared a Caliphate and pledged its allegianve to ISIS for good measure. To many all hope was lost.

The Presidential Election marked a turning point in the war against terror. The Incubent Goodluck Jonathan was defeated by former army general Muhammadu Buhari in what was considered the most peaceful and credible election in Nigeria’s history. The President moved the Nigerian army command headquaters from its airconditioned building in Abuja to Maiduguri, the very frontline in the fight against Boko Haram. $4 billion was made available for defence procurement, a new Special Forces Unit was created and sent to Russia for training. Modelled after the Spetnaz they weretrained to hunt down key Boko Haram figure heads.

The result of these reforms implemented by President Buhari was almost immediate. The Nigerian army took back %80 of lost territories in a month, Special Forces Units had Boko Haram on the run with more camps found and destroyed each week. Thousands fled but the military continued to chase down boko haram fighters. Aided by recoinnasance aircraft and Drones, fleeing Boko Haram groups were usually spotted and within hours had Special Forces Units, such as the Airborne Paratroop Division on their tail . The ability of the Nigerian army to deploy mobile forces in a short amount of time means Boko Haram groups have become, in effect nomads. They are constantly on the move, staying in one place a few days and moving on. In a 2 part Series we shine the spotlight on some of the New Nigerian army and the weapons that has helped turned the tide against Boko Haram.
