Hello Experts,

My friend's Nissan Primera 2002 model (automatic) takes long to shift from P.

This happens anytime he had cause to park the car and shift the gear to park (P). Sometimes, it takes up to 5 mins of trying before he is able to shift the gear to D and move. However, the car moves smoothly between R, N and D and even while driving.

Sometimes he puts the gear in Neutral (N) whenever he wants to park to avoid the embarrassment. The issue started about a week ago.

What could possibly be wrong?

Shifter cable (possible mechanically stiff), it might need re greasing.

Also the range switch might need recalibration. The park position on the lever might not match up to the park position on the range switch.

This would cause the inhibitor mechanism to keep shifter in park (probably why he has to struggle for 5mins)

Thank you GAZZUZZ.

Car is in Ilorin. Can we grease the shifter cable by ourselves or do we need a mechanic to do this?

If yes, how do we locate the shifter cable & range switch for greasing & recalibration. How do we proceed please?

The Park Position Switch (with the Shift Lock Solenoid Valve) under the shift lever is failing. You could always press the shift lock release button to get out of park. A temporary measure of course.
Btw, do the brake lights function?

Op, is your car a early 2002 model (p11-144), or a late 02 (p12). The car should be a CVT. Sadly, the shift lock release button is absent in most models. First picture is p11-144, second one is p12.

I've been trying to dig out the contacts of a modern auto technician in Ilorin. Just found it.

Imperial Auto Clinic
0706 771 8297.

Pls I don't know him personally, so exercise your due diligence. But from what I heard of him, he seems to know what he's doing. He's not your everyday kazeem, so may be a bit pricey.

Take the car to him, let him have a look. Goodluck!!!

Meanwhile, if the gear lever can move with the ignition off, you should move the gear to neutral before starting the car. Start the car in neutral, then shift to drive. That is just to make life easier for you till you fix things up. You should fix it asap.

Its the second one. Late 02 (p12) model.
