CV; As A Doc Or Pdf? by Fraih(f): 10:02pm On Dec 28, 2015
Hello everyone,
For clarity sake, would want to know the preferred format for CVs when sending to a recruiting firm via E-mail. Is it okay to send it in Msword format or in a pdf format.
Also when the hard copy is being requested for, which would do?
I read that the pdf or jpeg format isn't acceptable by all.

I'll appreciate authentic replies.

Depends on what was requested. .doc is the most used format for this but sometimes I come across a few that state to include .pdf. Some even go as far to say you should send both formats. Just convert your cv to as many formats as possible to give you a reach advantage when asked for a particular one.

I always send pdf format except otherwise stated.
Word format can easily be tampered with by unauthorized group people ( inexperienced HR officers)

To me pdf format shows professionalism. Every recruitment agencies will always have adobe Reader installed in their computer. The only exception is when the shortlisting process is gonna be down by computer program such as taleo and a whole lot of others. In that case, word format is advised due to low weight and compatibility with the said program

So if an hardcopy is being requested for, the CV in pdf should be presented?

If the recruitment entails hardcopy, all you need do is print out a copy of your CV and submit by hand or by post. Mind you, your document can take any format ; Word or pdf but the moment you print it out, it becomes hardcopy else it is called soft copy

I have seen more than 10 related topics of this kinds on Nairaland.

My take: MS Word Doc is simply the best. Ask any CV/Résumé Reviewer, they will tell you the same, for the following reasons.

1. MS Word Doc comes in SMALL size compared to PDF Format.
2. Recruiters usually appreciate Word Format for many reasons. Ask Jobberman or ngrcarreers, etc
3. Every system could easily download Word, I can't tell of PDF.
4. Most HR Managers use a CV scanning software to filter candidates from the application pool.
5. Check the attached pics.

People use pdf for guarantee. No one wants all their hard work (formatting /tables /arrangement etc) to be badly miss arranged if the recruiter is using a different Ms word.

With pdf it's always as you intended that's why it's the best.
NOTE: It only becomes a problem when the size is too large, most recruiters might frown at it.

Word on the other hand is usually small in size. That's why most people prefer word. But if you are to use word use .doc that's 1997-2003 format because all recent ms word can read it just fine unlike you using the 2013 version which 2010 can't open.

Hello Fraih, I just stumbled on your post as quoted. Please always send your resume'/CV in PDF format. Don't mind whatever you've heard to the contrary. Ms word format is editable and highlights unknown errors via the red and blue highlighting lines. PDF is not editable, hence it keeps your CV as you sent it. If it is in msword format, a (mischievous) person can even edit knowingly or unknowingly (just by mistakenly hitting the 'enter' key on the keyboard) and add unnecessary stuffs to your CV and that may sieve you out of an opportunity. But if it were to be in PDF format no editing will occur. PDF format is the standard best-pratice format. Ms word is a 'novice' format. Take note!
