Liverpool are set to sign Steven Caulker on a season-long loan from Queens Park Rangers, according to widespread reports.

According to the typically reliable Paul Joyce of the Daily Express, Liverpool have approached Championship club QPR with regards to signing centre-half Caulker on an emergency loan.



Three of the Reds’ four first team central defenders are currently injured, with Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel sidelined with hamstring injuries, and Mamadou Sakho nearing a return from a knee problem.

Kolo Toure therefore represents Jurgen Klopp’s only fit option in central defence, and so QPR have been sounded out over Caulker’s availability.

The 24-year-old has spent the first half of the season on loan at Southampton, but has featured in just three Premier League games, starting one in August.

Klopp has discussed his need for a defender this month despite being previously opposed to January signings, but it appears that Liverpool’s injury crisis may have forced his hand.

Caulker’s last two full Premier League campaigns have ended with relegation at Cardiff and QPR respectively.
