Lagos Assembly raises alarm over relocation of companies to Ghana
By Akinwunmi King, Reporter, Lagos

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have expressed concern over the relocation of manufacturing industries from the country to Ghana due to lack of incentives and the acute power problem in Nigeria.

This was brought to the attention of the House under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by Sanai Agunbiade, chairman, House Committee on Commerce and Industry.

According to Agunbiade, manufacturing companies in Nigeria are already folding up, to relocate to Ghana and take advantage of the liberal investment incentives there.

He stated that the implication for the state is high unemployment rate and increase in criminal activities.

While attributing the development to constant power outage, he added that "manufacturers in Nigeria are crying over the power situation in the country which is the real bane of our manufacturing sector.

"I think Lagos State Government should call on the Federal Government to allow us implement the Independent Power Project (IPP) and distribute power to industrial areas, because Lagos would be most affected by these movements of industries to Ghana ".

While lending her voice, Deputy Chief Whip of the House, Lola Akande, advised that such a concession should be given to all states to avoid mass movement of people into Lagos.

Contributing to the debate, Chairman, House Committee on Finance, Adeola Olamilekan, said it is high time the Federal Government decentralised Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), because huge funds injected into the body has not yielded anything.

At this rate, every potential investor from the west or far East will head to Ghana instead of Nigeria yet we are the largest consumer nation in Africa.

Wouldn’t you move your company to the place (ghana) the market you are targeting (Nigeria) advise you to? I know I would. Apart from that, all the other stuff about lack of electricity and security fears are irrelevant. Western companies have the financial influence, ingenuity and capacity to set up a factory on a barren iceberg if they so choose. As for security, Nigeria is a large place; there are many safe places to set up business and all the workforce one need. I believe Nigeria should gradually reduce its dealing with European and American interests, they mean us no good, and instead cooperate more with China. I believe the Nigeria forcefulness, drive, ability and potential would benefit from Chinese none ideology driven practicality which is evident in their dealings in Africa.

Nigerians should continue celebrating ten years of uninterrupted power in Ghana that’s all good, it shows our magnanimity, that part of our character I wrote about, that thing that makes us the kindest people in Africa. Meanwhile, amidst the celebrations, banner waving and confetti throwing, we should amend that part of the constitution that undermined states pursuing independent power programs, corporate more with China and then we too can have uninterrupted power too.

well maybe there is lower production costs in Ghana. businesses don't make money based on sentiment or loyalty.
