Afraid To Love

In this world, they say love brings peace, joy and calmness to one's heart, some believe it brings it's pain and sacrifices along, but at the end; Love always prevails. But how can one be scared to to have this substance that prevails?

Purity. A young impolite woman, capable of making men drool at the sight of her unique and sexy features. A strong willed daughter of a billionaire who never listens to anybody except her papa. Beyond this rude lady lies a different woman entirely, completely scared of gving her heart to any man.

Jeremy. A young billionaire with breath taking gorgeous looks. Possesses lovable qualities but a player as well. Believes in love, is eager to find it but afraid of falling completely for the wrong woman.

The parents of Jeremy and Purity are determined to get them married to each other. Purity sees her parents idea as ridiculous and scoffs at the very thought of it.
There was no way she was going to marry any man. They were all beasts and she'd totally sworn off them. Never was she going to spend her life with her childhood enemy who once tried taking advantage of he.

Jeremy is disgusted at his father's request. He's never going to be with a woman chosen by his father. Especially one who lacked manners. A 'bi*ch' was the right word to use to describe the woman his papa had chosen for him.

The health of Edwin Broderick creates a tough predicament for the children. Will Jeremy change his mind and get married to his childhood enemy to save his father?
Purity - will she ever consider doing such? Is there any possibility of them throwing away their fears and insecurities to find love in each other?

Find out as you explore this mind blowing story - 'Afraid to Love."
Use your imagination as you read. See the characters come to life, see what they see and try to feel what they feel in each episode......make it real in your mind's eye.

Afraid to Love - Episode 1

“This can’t be happening!” cried Purity. She stared into space with disbelief and shock written all over her face.

“No, no,” she mumbled, looking around her office.

This man had carried out his threat. Who could have thought he would actually do it? Aaron Theodore was full of surprises and behaved like the Devil himself. She was a grown woman, old enough to make her decisions and do whatever she pleases. Now, this man – her papa, had chosen a husband for her. How could he?

Aaron Theodore had indeed surprised her. This man promised not to meddle in her private life anymore. Right from when she was a child to being an adult, she had never lived a life of her own- all she had done was to please her papa, doing things the way he wanted. Now, she grew up. She’s no more the baby of the home, she can make her decisions and do whatever please her. d--n this man! She wasn’t living for him. And he couldn’t dictate whom she’d marry, she’d show him.

The door opened, a young woman of about twenty-six popped her head in, then walked in. She was dressed in a grey suit. The skirt was mini- above her kneels which revealed straight beautiful legs, they were longer than their actual length ’cause she wore a four inches stilleto. Her hair was tied in a ponytail. Her lips shone, painted with a colourless lip gloss. Her lashes were tick. She smiled brightly and looked Purity in the eye. Her eyes were stunning.

“Heather!” Purity snapped as she caught sight of her secretary. “You can’t knock or you forgot your manners?” she was now sounding like a b---h.

“I…I did …knock.” Heather stammered. “There…was…no…no response.”

“Are you saying I’m deaf?” Purity glared at her.

“No! I came to give you the files you’ve been asking for.” she was embarrassed.

“I’m in no mood for such! Get that file and your walking stick body out of my office!” Purity ordered.

In a flash, Heather was out of her office. She ran out with tears welled up in her eyes.

Purity, what the hell is wrong with you! You just made your secretary cry. You’re a witch. A voice in her head scolded her.

She didn’t care. Her father got her into this. She’d beat him to his game.

She stared at her cherry desk, her fingers wandered on it. She took a pen from the pen holder and scribbled something on a notepad. Grabbing hold of the telephone on her desk, she called her secretary.

“Heather,” she called out when the call was answered. “I’m sorry. Please cancel all my appointments today. I’ve got something to do.” she hung up.

Purity felt guilty talking to Heather that way. She must have knocked but Purity failed to hear it ’cause she was too busy with her thoughts. It wasn’t the poor girl’s fault. It was hers.

Purity groaned, carried her purse and left the office room. She did not look at anyone’s face, she just walked out of Theodore’s enterprises- the third richest business company in the world. She was the CEO, no one would dare question her.

Her usual smile wasn’t there, a frown replaced it. She didn’t bother about it, didn’t care. All that was on her mind now was to face Aaron Theodore and let him know she was no more a child, but a full grown woman who decides what to do with her life. No one was going to mess with her life. No on, not even her parents.

She slid into the driver’s seat of her silver volvo XC60 wheels, flung her purse in the front passenger’s seat. She put the key in the ignition hole and started car. Slowly, she joined the highway.

*

*

*

“You must be joking father,” Jeremy laughed and shook his head.

His father- Edwin Broderick gave him a grave look. “I’m being serious here. Purity Theodore is to be your wife. You will see her tomorrow, court her and marry her.”

“Father! Why should I marry her?” Jeremy threw at his father, sarcastically.

“She’s my choice. Besides, her father and me are close pals. They once lived in our neighbourhood, remember?” he raised a brow.

Jeremy scratched his head, trying to remember. Then it came! The little girl who lived in his neighborhood when he was a kid. He’d liked her a certain time and tried to be nice to her, be friends with her but she was very rude to him. She felt she was a princess, she was the last and only daughter of the Theodore’s. Dam! He was rich too and more powerful then she. He began despising her since then, she must be a beautiful woman now. He had forgotten all about her, till this moment.

“Purity? No father, I can’t marry her. Dammit! I can’t even have her as my friend or dare, you’d now expect me to have her as my wife? Holy s--t! NO!”

Edwin Broderick laughed at his son’s outburst. “I know she used to tease you back then. I assure you, she has changed. You’d get to like her.”

“Father, I can’t.” Jeremy pleaded.

“Its final. You two should be married for a year, then you can divorce if you want to. My word is final. Think about it, son.”

Edwin patted his son’s shoulder and left him all by himself.

~

Jeremy was furious. There was nothing to think about. He hated this girl and will never marry her. What made his father come up with such a ridiculous idea? He would never marry Purity and that is final.

2.

“Papa, papa,” Purity called as she climbed out of her car. She half walked and half ran into her father’s massive duplex.

There was a beech decidous tree in the middle of the large compound. Carnation flowers were planted around it, decorating the tree. The sweet scent of the carnation flowers filled the air.

Purity sniffed in the air, oh how much she loved the scent, this wasn’t the time for that. She got to the doorstep and flung the door open without knocking. This is my papa’s house. The rotound figure of her father came into view. He was dressed in a grey Armani suit, a glass of champagne on his left hand. He was handsome. The figures of others in the sitting room with him was now clear. There was a party or something like that. Her father had guests. Purity didn’t bother looking at them or greeting them, she just sternly gazed at her father.

“Papa, we need to talk!”

“How rude, Purity.” Theodore reprimanded his daughter, “I have guests.”

“Now, papa!”

Purity dragged herself into an inner room. Her father was right, she would have said hi to the guests, she wasn’t willing to. She’d have to show this man that she was a strong headed woman.

“I’m sorry about my daughter’s insolent attitude,” Aaron apologised, “She must have something on her mind. She doesn’t usually act this way. Please, excuse me.” He handed the glass of champagne to the bar tender and turned to leave his guests.

He met Purity in on of the interior rooms. He wasn’t pleased with her. “What has gotten into you?” he questioned.

She rolled her eyes, “Papa, you promised me, you said you’d never decide for me anymore; I’d make my own decisions. Why did you do this?” her vision was beginning to get blurry.

Aaron Theodore remained silent for a while.

“That’s the reason you couldn’t even greet your papa? Purity, where are your manners?”

“I sent them to hell the moment you told me you’ve chosen a partner for me!”

“You promised to behave.”

“You promised not to do it.”

“I’m sorry, Purity. I had no other choice.”

“I don’t understand.”

“We have some little problems. You know that. Our merging with the Broderick’s will do a great deal of help.”

“You want me to marry an old man?” she asked almost in shock.

“Nope. His son. His heir.”

“Papa, you are close to this man, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Why not let him help you. You can merge the companies without this marriage.” Purity suggested, hopefully.

“I want the marriage. It has a lot more advantages then just merging without it.”

“Papa,” she cried out, “You hate me! I’m like a toy to you, right? You want to use me as an instrument to save your business?” the tears fell.

“No, no. Purity, its best for you.”

This man had made up his mind. d--n! This tears can’t even make him change his mind.

“What’s his name?”

“Jeremy Broderick. His family and ours once lived in the same neighbourhood.”

“What? Jeremy? No, papa, no! I refuse to marry him.”

Jeremy, she never liked him for once. He almost took advantage of her when they were much younger and now he was to be her husband? Never! If he thinks he’ll have her now, he must be hallucinating.

“He’s the right guy for you,” Aaron answered innocently.

“I hate him. Never will I marry him.”

“You didn’t like him then, you will now.”

“No! Never!”

“I’d disinherit you!” Aaron warned.

3

Purity sat on the dining chair at the rare end of the restaurant. The tables were covered with red table cloths, and lit candles on them. The lights were dim making the restaurant more romantic.

She’d chosen the far end of the restaurant not to be easily noticed or recognized by the people she knew. She’d been forced to go out on a date with Jeremy Broderick. Her papa had warned to disinherit her. Now she had no other option than to comply to his wish. She was surely going to pay the old man back.

She sighed, relaxing on the chair. She hadn’t ordered anything. She just have to wait for Jeremy, then he’d order and the rest. She silently prayed he wouldn’t come. He must hate her too, after the way she’s treated him years back he never spoke to her. She was happy about that. He would say no, then they can explain to their parents the date was a disaster. She smiled to herself.

She stretched her arm and glanced at her wrist-watch. It was 7:15 p.m. She let out a breath. She was lightly sad and very happy at the same time. Sad cuz she really wanted to see him, curious of what he’d look like now. Why should she even care? She scoffed. She was happy cuz the date wouldn’t work out as planned, she’d never get to marry her worst enemy-Jeremy.

Purity searched her bag, dug out her cell phone and called her father.

“Papa, I’m coming home.”

“This early? What did you do?”

Phew! So, I’m always wrong? He can’t do anything wrong?

“He hasn’t arrived. I guess he doesn’t wanna see my face.” she smirked, her father couldn’t see it.

“I talked with Edwin, he says his son will be there.”

“He changed his mind. See you at home.”

She hung up and smiled mischievously. Without looking up, she quickly got hold of her bag, opened it and brought a notepad and a pen. She scribbled something down:

I waited and waited.

I lost my patience.

-P.

She smiled grimly at the words she wrote. Tore the sheet out, and placed it on the table. She turned...

Episode 4

By Patience Ahworegba

“You’re an slowpoke to think I’d agree. As a pretty princess that I am, you are not up to my level and not even my class. I wouldn’t stoop so low to get married to you! You disgust me! I hate you! You did so many unreasonable things to me last night. You’re the devil! An incarnate! Get the hell out of my office! Tell your father that I kicked you out. I don’t want to marry you. I, Purity Theodore said so.”

She was breathing heavily by the time she was done. Perspiration formed on her fore head. She had looked Jeremy in the eye, she saw flashes of anger in them. He stared murderously at her. Her heart skipped a beat. Oops! She had gone too far. No, no she hadn’t. Its him who crossed the boundaries. She wasn’t scared. She took a deep breath.

Jeremy moved towards her. When he got to where her two legs were planted on the floor, he didn’t stop.

Purity was about to fall. She didn’t know what had gotten into him. Why wouldn’t he stop walking. And the way he looked at her, very dangerous, deadly. God! had she said too much? Should she apologise? A million thoughts ran on her mind. She was alone with this man. Heather must have left. She had never been a alone with a man before, what was going to happen? Was he going to hurt her? Shouting for help was the last thing on her mind. She wasn’t going to appear so vulnerable to the people who worked under her. She’d deal with this devil on her own. But how?

In the twinkle of an eye, Purity moved back. She continued till she was trapped between her desk and Jeremy. She sniffed his cologne and was starting to feel dizzy. This man had lots of effects on her. Gazing at his lips, she wanted to taste them again. Purity!

“W-What is wrong with you?” she asked in a hoarse voice.

He smiled evily. The last thing on his mind was to battle words with this pretty witch. He had a more better way to deal with her. He drew his head towards hers. Their faces were inches apart. He could hear the thumping of her heart.

“What do you think?” he drawled.

Purity didn’t want to think. She had lots of things on her mind. She prayed she was wrong. She just had no strength to fight this man. He made her feel weak.

“You want to kiss me like you did last night? Please don’t.” She wasn’t sure if she just did that? Purity was pleading?

He grinned. “Like you didn’t enjoy it. Oh, my. Purity, please stop acting all innocent like you are pure- just as your name says, Purity. I know you are not.”

Of course, I’m pure! That’s why I was given that name. I am pure! She tried defending herself, he didn’t give her the chance.

“Uh-uh. Its my turn to speak. Please listen.” He drew closer to her.

Purity placed her hands on his chest and pushed him. “Go back. Give me a breathing space. You are too close.”

He obeyed. “You must listen to me.”

“I promise.”

The tension between them was reduced a bit. Jeremy also felt relieved. Being so close, he had withheld himself from tearing her clothes and taking her. She made him go crazy with desire. What other woman had gotten him this way? Her lethal mouth and eyes set him ablaze. He enjoyed watching her.

“Sit.”

“Nope. I’ll stand.”

“Let me get straight to the point. I really don’t want a wedding with you.”

That hurt. Why would that hurt her? She didn’t want to wed him either. But it hurt. The reason, she didn’t know.

She forced a smile. “That’s a relief. So, why are you here?” she s----d in a breath.

“My father reminded me of you. Two days ago, he brought up this idea that I marry you. I felt he was joking, but he meant it. You know I was late for our first date. It was because my father had a heart attack the very minute I was about to escape from the house. He pleaded with me to meet with you. I did so. Last night, after you left me, I went to the hospital to see my father, he wants the marriage. If it doesn’t happen, he’ll die. Please help me.”

She stood akimbo. “Wait. I don’t get it. Your father is sick? And his getting better depends on us getting married?”

11.

5

Purity couldn’t believe what she heard. Mr. Broderick was sick. He wants her to marry his only son to get better. What connects them both? How is that even possible? Does he even know her? Seen her? Doesn’t he have a wife? Her papa. Now she knew why.

“He doesn’t know me? Or our fathers? They are close.”

“I guess so. I can’t lose him. Please.”

“Your mother. She should be the one to help him.”

He looked away. The pains, feelings of despair came back. How could she? Why did she bring up his mother into this? How could she not? His mother had to stand by his father but she was dead now.

“She’s dead. Four years ago. Cancer took her.” he painfully explained.

She gazed at him with shock. Oh, he must have felt really bad. It must have been very difficult for them to cope. She couldn’t imagine herself without her parents even if she acted as if she didn’t value them. She felt his pain and felt very sorry for him.

“I’m sorry. Very sorry. I never knew.” she trudged to meet him and embrace him, patting his back. Purity, when did you take consoling lessons? You never do this.

He was amazed on seeing her open her arms for him. He welcomed the hug and felt secure, felt at ease in her arms. She was good despite her tongue filled with curses. She had human feelings.

“Thanks.” he mumbled.

She broke free and looked into his eyes. “You say your father will get better if we marry?”

“Yeah. I know you hate me. I can’t force you against your will-”

“Its alright Jeremy. I agree to help him. Its not a real wedding, but helping your dad.”

He grinned. “Thanks. I appreciate.”

“Its gonna be hard.”

“It will. Lets start by being friends. Agreed?”

She smiled sheepishly. She held out her hand for a handshake.

He shook it firmly.

“Friends.”

*

*

*

“Papa. I need to talk to you. Mum, you too.” Purity solemnly requested.

Two heads went up simultaneously. Aaron and Prudence Theodore’s eyes peered at their daughter- Purity Theodore. They must be thinking the same thing. And had Purity spoken on a calm manner.

Prudence smiled.

Aaron beckoned to Purity. “Come. Come sit with us. We’ll listen.”

Purity consented.

Seconds later, she found herself seated in the middle of both her parents. This is what she hadn’t done in a very long time. She doesn’t even give them the chance to speak with her, feeling they’ll always control and manipulate her life. Hearing of Jeremy’s loss, she had to show her parents that she loved them. Tomorrow might be too late. Not that she hadn’t heard of someone losing a parent before, but she had not been really close to such people. So, their pains, she never really felt. No close friends. Just her. And Jeremy coming into the picture, seeing how hurt he was about his mother even if it had been four years, taught her something. A lot.

*

*

*

“My darling,” Prudence held Purity’s hand firmly. “What do you have for us?”

Purity was brought back to life by her mother’s question. She smiled weakly. “Papa,” she looked at her father. “Mama,” she turned to look at her mother. “I want to know why. Why you chose Jeremy Broderick to be my husband.”

Aaron frowned. “Are we back to this again?”

“Baby, its what’s best for you.” Prudence assured her.

“Its all I’ve been hearing. I’m sure there’s more to that.” Purity argued.

“About the company?” Aaron raised his brows.

She shook her head. “There’s more to that.”

Prudence sighed.

Aaron lifted his hands, a sign of surrender. “Fine. I’ll tell you. I’ve noticed you don’t have or rather you’ve never had a boyfriend. Am I right?”

Oh, yeah. He was right. Boys, men. She’d never had time for them. Always kept them at a distance. Scared of them. But there was a time she met one and…

“And you are twenty-five years old. I hate to live to see a time when you’d be going crazy, searching for a mate. And I would want to see my grand kids.”

“Then you’d have let me made my choice. We talked about this once and we decided I’ll choose my husband. Didn’t we, mum?”

“Yes, dear.” Prudence stroked Purity’s hair with her other hand. “But at that moment, your papa and I had already chosen Jeremy for you. We just told you to find yourself a mate to end that discussion. You were all mad and you know…” she trailed off.

“I know you too well. I knew you would not be able to provide a suitable marriage mate.”

What? Was she that careless? Not being able to find a marriage mate? And her parents had already picked Jeremy even before they had discussed marriage. She had thought they chose Jeremy because of her inability to bring one at the due date. Even if she had, her parents would reject him. Purity resisted the urge to get angry. Calm down, calm down girl.

“So Jeremy’s the right guy for me?”

12.

“He is.” Aaron confidently answered.

Prudence nodded.

“Are you sure? Do you know details about him?”

“Of course. His dad and I being best buddies always talked about you and him.”

“His mother, Emily loved you a lot. Always wished you to be her daughter-in-law.”

“She is dead.” Purity blurted out.

Aaron and Prudence froze.

“How-how did you know?” Prudence enquired.

“Jeremy. We’ve been talking.”

“Ah!” Aaron exclaimed with joy. “That’s good. You guys have been getting along.”

“Um..not really. I want you guys to know that I’ve decided to marry him. Not that I love him ot want to please you two, its because his father’s sick and its his wish.”

“Whatever.” Prudence hugged her daughter. “This is the best news I’ve heard so far!”

Purity grinned. It had been a while since she saw her mum that way.

“He’s a good man. He’ll take care of you. You know you’re stubborn and all that. He’ll know how to. Just like me.”

Purity swallowed hard. This man always said things to get on her nerves. She promised herself she’d remain calm. “It wasn’t all about the company, right?”

“No, my love. All about you. Shall we celebrate?”

“Not yet. I want to rest and think.”

Purity wriggled herself out of the embrace.

Aaron Theodore knew his daughter could change her mind if they piss her off. He knew better than to upset her. He held his wife’s shoulder. “Take all the time, my love. Please, don’t change your mind.”

“By the way, you’re looking more beautiful in this your serene state. Jeremy sure does have a lot of good influence on you.” Prudence cut in.

Her husband nodded in agreement.

Purity nodded too and disappeared into the hallway.

Prudence’s eyes twinkled. “Oh, Aaron. I’m so happy. I can spot the changes in her.”

“Same here, darling. Told you Jeremy would be a great man especially for our Purity.” He kissed her forehead.

“Darling,” Prudence held on to Aaron and smiled. “Edwin’s sick. Lets call him.”

All dressed in a blue cocktail dress stripped with white, Purity sat on her king sized bed waiting for Jeremy to come pick her up. She heaved a sigh and lay on the bed. She was bored and still phoneless. It didn’t occur to her till now. When she probably needed to do things with it. Play games, check her emails, chat on Facebook; then read a story on w----d. She had no access to such. She’d probably get a phone the next day.

Dragging herself down from the bed, she stood in front of her dressing mirror. She looked down at her 4 inches black stilleto heels, to her cocktail dress. She wore a silver bracelet on her left arm. He neck, decorated with a silver neck lace which matched her bracelet. Her ears, a silver clip-on ear-ring. Her make up was mild and simple. She had applied powder, black eye shadow on both eyes, pink blush on both cheeks and a bright red lipstick. Her long brown hair was in a French twist. Her silver eyes shown. She looked so pretty. She stared and smiled at her reflection.

Where was Jeremy? She glanced at the wall clock hanging on the wall of her room. The time was 5:45p.m. Jeremy was to pick her up by 6:00p.m. They’ll hang out together till it was 8:00p.m, then they’ll go see Edwin. She was all dressed up now, waiting for him. Why had she prepared so early? Did she really want this date? Had she already started falling for Jeremy? No. No. It was all because of his father. If Jeremy hadn’t told her about his health and the death of his mother, she wouldn’t be doing this. Then, why had she hugged him? Just being sensitive to his feelings, that’s all.

What if you guys become so close and you start to fall for him? He is doing so for his father too, he might hurt you in the end. He doesn’t care about you one bit? You can’t do this. No, Purity. Stop this! How did you even get yourself into this miss? He might also be after your body. They all are. You’ll surely get hurt.

Afraid to Love - Episode 5

By Patience Ahworegba
13.

“He’ll definitely hurt me,” she mused. “Why didn’t I say no? But my parents are happy.” She continued staring at the mirror. “I’m more happier. What could go wrong?”

Men, you’re scared of them, came a voice.

A knock on the door. She turned to it. “Coming.”

She fed her eyes once more. Then noticed something. Tears formed in her silver eyes. When did she start crying?
She turned her back to the mirror, to face the door. She got to it and turned the door knob, then flung it open. Purity gave a gasp of surprise as she saw Jeremy and her mother together. Her mum, beaming with smiles. She couldn’t help but notice Jeremy’s extreme handsomeness. He looked so good in his brown tuxedo. He greeted her with a boyish grin. Her heart melted.

“You are looking pretty, my darling.” Prudence commented on seeing her lovely daughter.

Purity only smiled.

“Jeremy had arrived since. Been with him so I decided to surprise you by bringing him to your room. You will soon be married. Have fun.” she bade them goodbye.

“Come in.”

Jeremy stepped into the room. It was a great sight. Wonderfully decorated. The walls were painted pink and blue- equally. The floor was carpeted, wall to wall. Opposite the big bed, a white dressing table was stationed and a stool beneath it. On the dressing table, he could see cream, make ups, perfume, a brush and other female items. By the side of it stood a full length mirror. Then a bureau; painted pink. On it stood a blue flower vase with fresh rose flowers. Her closet was next, firmly locked. The door leading to her bathroom followed. It was open, the floor was tiled and it glittered. The bathroom was neat.

One more thing, the nice scent of the perfume she used filled the room. Welcoming him. He grinned ear to ear. “You’ve got a really nice room here.”

She shut and bolted the door. “Thanks.”

“Can I sit on the bed?”

“Sure.”

“Great!” He sat carefully to avoid hurting or infuriating her. He’d observed that she takes good care of her things. The room was very tidy. He fingered the crisp white duet spread over the bed. He watched her at the same time. Her hands were folded on her chest, her back resting on the door.
“You are beautiful.” He muttered. Geez! Where did that come from? That was to be said in his head.

Purity blushed. “Oh yeah? Liar.”

He chuckled. “You are. Um. You dressed up early. I admire that.” After they’d agreed to be friends, he decided to give her a chance. She might not be so bad after all.

“Thanks. Are you going to spend time in here?”

“Only if you let me.”

She let her eyes drop to the ground. A thousand and one thoughts ran through her mind. Should she let him stay and then tell him she wouldn’t go out with him? Should she just yell at him, they’ll fight and things will go bad? She was confused. She kept pondering over what to do.

Jeremy studied her. It was obvious she was worried. Was she planning to change her mind? “What’s wrong?”

She looked up, then he noticed it

14.

“What happened to your lip?”

Oh, the bruise she had while washing him out of her. She’d used make up to hide it till it heals. Was it still visible? No one had questioned her about it, he didn’t this morning, why now?

“Its nothing, just an injury.” she lied. She fought within herself between telling him the truth or not. He cared, to ask about it.

“It isn’t so obvious. But are you sure you are okay? How did you get it? Come, sit.”

She shuffled to the bed and sat beside him, meeting his gaze. “You’re going to be a great journalist.”

“Why is that?”

“You’re a good questionnaire.”

He giggled. “That’s with only those I care about.”

She shook her head. “Come off it. I know you do hate me. Its for your father.”

He ignored her remark.
“Purity, I know you are a good girl. My father convinced me. You are really good. Don’t know why you insulted me back then.”

She beamed. She could see his face. He was staring at her with horror after she had said very embarrassing words to him. He’d hated her since then. And her too.

“You tried taking advantage of me.” she explained quietly.

He was slightly dazed. “Me? I never did! I just, you know,” he shrugged. “There was an ant crawling on your lap. I tried to get it off without letting you know. If I had told you, you’d have shrieked and you know the rest. I considered that a favour for you.”

Her eyes were wide with shock. “I didn’t know you were trying to help me. As you left, the ant stung me.”

Laughing, he said, “You deserved it. I had actually prayed for it to bite you.”

“And it did. I was wearing shorts. And for a boy to touch my laps, I didn’t like it. It was going to lead to something else.”

“How did you know? You were only seven then?”

“Right. My mum always taught me everything early enough. I learn fast.”

“Oh, I see. I’m sorry, would have told you. Your words and actions made me hate you.”

“Same here. My hate is stronger.”

“Do you still hate me?”

“I don’t know. Do you?”

“I don’t anymore. We’ve understood why all that happened.”

“Yeah.” she let out a breath.

He reached for her hand. As he touched them, he felt electric sensations. She snatched her hands immediately. Those sensations reminded him of the first kiss they shared.

“Don’t touch me without my notice, next time!” she snapped.

He grinned at her. “Did you feel it too?”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“Liar.”

She rolled her eyes. Folded her arms.

“Purity, I want to take you out.”

“I decided we’ll just see your papa and then I’ll return home.”

“That’s not what we agreed on.”

“I changed my mind!”

“Its not fair. Come on!”

She remained silent. Pursed her lips and kept looking at her feet.

“Are you scared of me?”

He hit the nail on the head. She was actually scared of him, all men except her papa and maybe his. Then, her brothers.
“Oh, why would I be scared of you?”

His eyes were all over her, scanning her. Concern and worry written over it. “Then dine with me. I want to take you out.”

“Nope. Lets go see papa.” she disagreed.

He scanned her more. “You dressed so pretty for me. Why not let me show you off tonight?”

She grinned. “Who gave you the guts to say I dressed for you?”

“You did. Look at you. You just didn’t dress like you’re going to visit a sick man. You’re dressed like you’re going on a date. And you barely dress this way.” he remarked.

“How come you know such about me?”

He had kinda told her what she kept to herself. Just her papa ad mama knew. They must have told both Edwin and Emily. Emily, when she was alive. Edwin had probably told his son.

“Forget about that. Are we going out? That’s what I came here for. Am I not looking cute?” he winked at her.

She was beginning to like him. She nodded.

He grinned with delight. He hauled himself off the bed and attempted to help her. She swatted his hands.

“Ouch! That’s hurts.”

“Serves you right.”

After saying goodbye to her parents, they both strolled out of the mansion. Purity tucked her arms under Jeremy’s. She was too tired to walk. He gracefully assisted her.

When they got to his car, he helped her climb in. As he got in, he didn’t turn the engine on. He just peered at her.

Purity was beginning to feel uncomfortable. She started sweating. She wasn’t used to being stared at the way he was doing now.
“Please stop. Why are we not moving?”

“I have a surprise for you.” he tilted himself to the back seat of the car and pulled something out. He handed it to her.

“What is this?” she took it from him. She didn’t hesitate to unwrap it. When she was done, she couldn’t believe her eyes. He had given her a new phone. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge! Tears welled up in her eyes. “Thanks.”

15.

“Did you enjoy the meal?” Jeremy questioned Purity, walking her to his car.

She nodded in affirmation.

They continued the walk in silence.

They were walking side by side.

Purity, on a date with Jeremy. It was actually her first. They didn’t go out as lovers but friends, getting to know each other. She had been very shy while they were eating. She’d never been shy eating with the opposite s-x. Countless number of times, she had talked over meals with different clients, negotiating businesses and offering deals. That’s her only special. But when it came to other things outside the world of business, it was all new to her. She couldn’t look Jeremy in the eye.

She had stolen glances at Jeremy, he ate confidently, talked confidently, even smiled confidently at her. To her, she felt he must have had lots of dates with different women. No wonder he was so good at it. Considering his looks, women would surely drool over him and want him for themselves. She really hadn’t though of women falling does men. It really didn’t exist to her. Why now?

Jeremy had winked at her while watching her sip her glass of wine. She caught him doing so and her heartbeat increased. So many fireworks exploded in it. She simple felt special. The thought of him winking at another lady got her jealous. Purity, you never get jealous.

While she had kept pondering over what she had felt during the meal, she never knew they had gotten to the car; till Jeremy firmly gripped her arm. That feeling came again. She shot him a grave look.

Jeremy read it immediately and released her arm.
“No thank you?”

“For defying my orders?” she retorted.

He looked at her with surprise. “I didn’t know what you were thinking about while we were moving to my car. But I know you’d have walked past it and bumped into that crash can if I hadn’t stopped you.”

I had been thinking about you! She pushed those thoughts aside. “You could have warned me, shouted my name or something.”

He chuckled. “And get you to jump out of your skin? Then you’ll lash me with ugly words? Nope.”

She sighed. “I give up.”

He pushed himself closer. “Purity say thank you. I helped you.”

She made a face. “I don’t usually thank people for the things they do for me. They’re supposed to do it. I’m a princess!”

“Not here!” Jeremy objected. “You are a princess at your home and father’s company.”

She scowled.

“We are not leaving this place till you say ‘thank you’. You should learn to appreciate what others do. And let me correct you. You’re wrong when you say people are supposed to help you. They do it out of kindness and love, you can’t force them. And when they do so, show that you appreciate by saying ‘thank you’. It’ll want them to do more.”

His words made sense. It touched her. She really never appreciated what people did for her. She did in her heart but never showed it. She was a princess and its the duty of others to worship the ground she walked on without thanking them. No one dared to questioned her about it. Just her papa. And now, Jeremy Broderick. Her father was right. He’s the only man that could tame her.
“Aren’t you scared of me?” she enquired.

He smiled. “Why should I?”

She twisted her lips. “Cause everyone else is. Men and women don’t lecture me the way you just did and you insulted me. Calling me ungrateful?”

“Are you grateful?” he didn’t wait for an answer. “Ever since that day you rained curses on me, I had vowed never to be scared of women or let them manipulate my life. You were the first to do that. And hopefully, you’ll remain the last. Now, say, ‘thank you’.” He ordered.

She smiled wryly. “And if I don’t?”

“I’ll make sure you walk home.” he threatened.

She giggled. “Ha! Over my dead body.”

“Try me.”

His face warned her. There was no smile on it. Those hazel eyes were filled with fury. One more wrong then, he’d do something disastrous to her, something terrible. Like he’d done the previous night- kiss her. What was wrong with this man? Why is he trying to teach her manners? Not that she didn’t know them, she did but never practised. She wasn’t giving up without a fight.

“I am Purity Theodore. You know that right? You know who I am? I can ruin you with a snap of my fingers, like this!” she snapped her fingers.

Afraid to love - Episode 8

By Patience Ahworegba
22.

This sight of her really touched him. Her crying state. She looked like an innocent child and an angel whenever she wept. This was what he always fell for. It wasn’t working this time, he wouldn’t fall for it. Lifting himself up from the swivel chair, he found his way to where she stood. He took her in his arms.

“Will you stop crying?” he asked, almost pleading.

“Please, come back to me. I can’t live without you.”

He released her and looked her in the eye. “Its not possible. We’re not meant to be. I really do care for you. I don’t see myself marrying you. Its not like I didn’t try, I did, but it was getting nowhere. It was gonna end anyway,” he calmly explained.

“If its the fights you’re talking about it happens in every relationship. I’ll change, I’ll be better.”

“No, Tricia. There’s no going back. Lets move on.”

“Its easy for you to say because you already have this fiancee of yours. Do you love her? Is she great in bed, like I am?”

Her unexpected question really shocked Jeremy. Was he in love with Purity? He didn’t know for sure, but he had started developing feelings for her. If she was great in bed, he had no answer to that. She’s supposed to be. She’s very pretty and had a lovely body, why shouldn’t she?
“Tricia, I don’t know if I love her. I think I’ll get to love her-”

She cut him off. “So why can’t you get to love me? I bet she’s no better than me. We made great love. We’re- we’re so good together. Come on.”

His eyes darkened. “Don’t talk about her like that. She’s pure, a virgin.”

Tricia stilled for some seconds, then cackled with laughter. “She’s so not your type! You knew the women you slept with weren’t virgins.”

“You knew I was cheating!”

“Of course, I knew. It pained me a lot. But what could I have done? The love I feel for you is so strong that I agreed to let you have them, but you’ll always return to me and my bed.”

“That’s not love, Tricia. If its love, you wouldn’t want any woman to touch me.”

“That’s my definition of love!” she retorted. “If its the s-x you want with her cuz I know you’ve never slept with a virgin before, do it and I’d be waiting for you.”

“I am not sleeping with her till I marry her. I have changed and want her as my wife. I really do respect and admire her for her innocence. I’m not going to take innocence and dump her, no.”

“You really didn’t value me. I hate you. You cheated on me with several different women on different occasions and I didn’t complain. I felt every man must cheat. Little did I know I was deceiving myself. You’ll pay for this, Jeremy.”

He shot her an angry look. “How am I to know that you didn’t cheat as well?”

She gravely glared at him. “You’re a b-----d!” Grabbing her purse and other stuff from the desk, she snarled at him, “You messed with the wrong woman! I’m now a love-lorn. I’m gonna deal with you and that so-called virgin of yours.”

Something snapped within Jeremy. “Get out of here! I never wanna set my eyes on you, ever again.”

“We’ll see.” She started walking towards the door. When she got there, she regained her composure. She looked at him over her shoulder. He was watching her with eyes, dark with anger and possibly hatred. She smirked. “Jeremy Broderick, I love you. I have made up my mind not to share you with another woman. This is your last chance. If I can’t have you, no other woman will.” she concluded and proudly paraded herself out of the office, slamming the door behind her.

Jeremy collapsed on a chair, the one Tricia had sat on. “Holy s--t!” he swore violently. “I regret the day I met that LovePeddler. I curse the day I agreed to date her. Woe to the day I slept with her. d--n!” he raked his hand through his hair.

23.

“What’s up with the look on your face?” Prudence questioned Purity. “Did something go wrong? Anything that had to do with Jeremy?”

Purity smiled on hearing Jeremy’s name. “No, mama. Just that a mean-looking lady created an ugly scene at the company’s premises as I was about leaving. I don’t know why she did that.”

Prudence heaved a sigh of relief. “Hope she isn’t dangerous? I’m worried about you.”

Purity disagreed. “I don’t think so, she looked like a nervous wreck. Do not be worried. I’m fine.”

“Alright dear, come here.” Prudence wanted a hug from her daughter. To her surprise, Purity jumped into her arms. Holding Purity so close and at her will ignited memories of her childhood. Purity was her favourite girl. They were so close and did so many things together. But as she grew into a teenager, things changed. Due to her fears and insecurity, she began viewing both her parents as enemies instead of allies and they drifted apart. Prudence had tried to mend the rift between them; Purity never gave her that chance. She hadn’t given up on her daughter. “Are you alright?” Prudence questioned, Purity was still in her arms.

Purity laughed softly. “Mama. I’m good. I know you’re wondering why.”

Prudence let her daughter go and gazed at her silver eyes. “I want to know why.”

“Mama, I’m so happy.” Purity jumped up excitedly like a ten year old. “Though that b---h nearly spoilt it. But I’m good.” She gave a broad grin, clasped her hands together and twirled once.

Prudence rubbed her eyes with both palms and opened them again. Did Purity just spin around with happiness? Was her daughter okay? “Its okay, honey. Um, come sit.” She took Purity by the hand and they both sat on a two-seater sofa. Prudence held Purity’s arm. “Tell me, why are you so happy?”

Purity giggled. “Mama. Jeremy and his papa made me feel so special last night.”

Prudence was so happy to hear that. “Really? Tell me about it.”

“Um,” Purity raised her head and rolled her eyes, trying to recall the previous night’s events. “Well, he bought me a new cell phone. The latest. I really didn’t expect it. But I was glad he did. Secondly, he took me to a restaurant and we had a great meal, I was a little bit shy but it all went well.” Purity was talking slowly, choosing her words. At times, she looked away from her man’s gaze. She had never done this before. “We kind of fought over a minor thing, but made up later on. He took me to his wonderful home, it was so so beautiful and cozy. His papa and I had a little chat. He thinks I’m kind of exceptional from all other women and will be the best for Jeremy. Jeremy couldn’t believe I’m still a virgin. I haven’t really felt this happy in a long long time.”

Prudence was full of smiles. “I am so glad I lived to see this moment. My daughter, you’re a good and special girl. You just fail to notice it ’cause you’re always alone, indoors and commanding people to do this or that. Spending time out with others will make you catch lots of fun.”

Purity nodded in agreement. “I know that now. I will try my best.”

“Good. Do you like Jeremy?”

Purity’s cheek turned pink. “Isn’t that a personal thing?”

“Not with me.”

“Okay. Kind of. I don’t know. Maybe.”

It was Prudence’s turn to laugh. She laughed hysterically. Seconds passed, then she gradually ended the laughter. “I know you like him. You will eventually love him if not now.”

“Love? Who’s talking about love? Its only ‘like’. Love doesn’t mean like, neither does like mean love.” Her feelings instantly changed. Hurt could be sensed in her words.

“I’ve always known you to be this frightened or scared when it comes to love. What is wrong?”

She didn’t want to ruin her day. “Lets forget about that. I left the office just to spend time with you. Anything could happen tomorrow or nest. I wanna be a good woman, just Jeremy is a good man.” She fell on her mum’s shoulder and beamed.

“I hope this lasts. Lets go make lunch.” Prudence stood up.

“Okay. You’ll tell me about Emily. I really want to know lots about her,” Purity replied, standing up.

Prudence was bewildered. “Okay.”

Tricia sat all alone in the dark. Her hair was a mess, she looked as if she’d lost a beloved in death. Little rays of lights coming in from the window revealed littered bottles on the ground. She’d been drinking. Drinking ever since she got back from Jeremy’s place of work. Why would a man make her go so crazy? She’d loved him since she set eyes on him. Been a good friend to him. The relationship hadn’t been so nice, but they never discussed it. Now, he wants to get married. Not to her, to a pure, virgin. Jeremy was attracted to virgins? She wasn’t but her slept with her. And every touch from him made her fall more and more in love with him. Jeremy was hers. She wailed bitterly. She placed her hands on her lips. “Jeremy is mine,” she muttered in between sobs. “Its over, will never share him again. He is mine.”

24.

He grunted and dug his hands into his hair and out. d--n! He smashed his glass against the counter. He looked like a demon in his mad state.

“Hey! Control yourself!” The waiter yelled at him.

He turned and glared at the waiter. His eyes were as cold as ice. His cold gaze sent shivers down the spine of anyone who’d see them. “What did you just say?” he snarled at the waiter who just scolded him.

The waiter trembled. His hands were shaking. “N-Nothing. Carry on. I’m sorry.” Fear could be detected from the way he spoke.

Unexpectedly, the angry man gripped the throat of the waiter. “Tell me the truth! You have never set eyes on her for the past nine years? She has never come for a drink or anything? If you don’t tell me the truth, I’ll murder you here and now!”

The waiter was not able to make a sound. He just held onto the man’s big hand struggling to free himself. He choked in the process, finding it very difficult to breathe. The angry man was stronger and tightened his grip on the waiter’s neck.

A group of persons observed what had been happening between the waiter, known as Nathan and the infuriated man. These persons were regular customers of the bar and knew Nathan. Sensing he was in trouble, they rushed to his rescue.

“What the f--k are you doing?” the first guy barked at the soon-to-be murderer.

His ears heard the voice that just spoke. He turned to face the guy. His hold on Nathan was released a bit, he hadn’t let go off him completely. He frowned as he examined him and the different guys with him.

“Let him go!” Another voice commanded.

He silently studied him. He was very hefty and muscular. He had a very wired look, strange and dangerous. He didn’t have to hear another command to free the waiter. They’d surely pounce on him if he refused. He tactfully let the waiter go. The waiter immediately began coughing, he tried to catch his breath.

“What was that for?” the first guy questioned.

“He has something I need!” he angrily replied.

“Oh, no. I don’t!” Nathan defended himself. “She hasn’t been here since that day. We’ve never set eyes on her ever since. I do not know her.” he coughed again. That was a deadly grip.

“She promised she would. You are lying.”

“To hell with you and her. Get the f--k outta here!” Nathan roared with anger.

The man filled with fury took a step towards Nathan. Expertly, the five guys that had earlier come to Nathan’s rescue, blocked him. “Leave. If you don’t want to say hello to your mama in hell to night, get lost!” a different guy challenged.

He wasn’t stupid. He knew when to retreat. He had been defeated and had lost. Surely, he’d never stop searching for this girl. He’d search till he dies. She was really precious. He smiled devilishly and dashed out of the bar. God! What on earth was happening to him? For a girl he had met only once, he’d been making a fool of himself. Nine years ago, he saw her and never caught a glimpse of her after that day. It never occurred to him that he wouldn’t see her again. Was she dead? Nine years. He didn’t even know her real name. She’d probably be married now with a kid or two. She wasn’t the marrying type, she’d never settle down. She had cried that night, telling him her deepest fears, of course; under the influence of alcohol. So beautiful, so angelic. Why had he believed her when she said she’d return the next day? Did her fear consume her? Why bother? He’d fallen in love with her and must bed her. She’s his.

Edwin was relaxing on the lounger under a parasol. He was close to the swimming pool dressed in just a white single and underwear. A stool was close to him, on it was a glass jug filled with orange juice. He’d stopped taking alcohol since he started having problems with his heart. He smiled lazily as he enjoyed the feel of the wind on his body.

When he sat up, he attempted to pour himself the orange juice from into the empty glass that stood by the jug. During the process, he heard heavy footsteps on the brick floor. Angry foot steps. He wondered what was going on, the angry man was coming his direction. He successfully filled his glass with the juice. He took it up and was about to take a sip.

“Father!” Jeremy cried out.

Afraid to love - Episode 10

The stars filled the night sky. The moon was full. The lights produced by the electric bulbs of the restaurant and street lights gave beauty to the surrounding. It was a very unusual night. People flooded the street as well as the restaurant. Was as if there was a national festival, but nothing like it.

Jeremy took Purity by the hand as he pushed through the crowd. Finally, they made it. They got to Purity’s car, she unlocked it and slid into the driver’s seat. Tho door was still open and Jeremy held it.

“Are you not going home.”

“Nope. Still got some unfinished business to do.”

“And you’re not going to tell me about it?”

He shook his head. “Till I’m done.”

“Its alright. Thanks for tonight. It was- was…”

“Special?” he found the right word for her.

She nodded. “Yeah. Special.”

“I really want to drive you home.”

“I do understand. Good night.”

“Be careful. Drive safely.”

“I’m not a baby. I know what to do.”

He shut the door and watched her drive off. “You will soon be my baby.”
He put his hands in his pocket and walked to his car. He got in and drove off.

“Who’s out there?” Purity questioned the security guard as she slid out of her wheels. She noticed him checking the gate, as if seeing someone.

“I’m not sure. I think there is.” The guard replied still peeping through the gate.

She walked up to him. Has some one followed me home? She thought to herself.
“Open the gate.” She instructed.

The guard complied.
As he pushed the gates open, he and Purity caught sight of a man, few meters away from the gate.

Purity was stunned. A man outside her father’s building this late? It couldn’t be Jeremy. He had followed her or was just looking for someone? Perhaps, he was lost, got the wrong house number. He might also be a criminal, a murderer, an armed robber, name it. Her heart began pounding fiercely against her chest. Her lips quivered, she was frightened. She quickly glanced at the guard, he stood still, probably waiting for more orders from her. She wasn’t alone and wasn’t going to show her inner fears in the presence of her security. She braced herself, pulled her cell phone from her purse and shuffled to meet this unknown man. She didn’t go close to him. She stood at a considerable distance. “Who are you?” She asked, trying to sound courageous.

The unknown man made to leave.

“Stop right there!” She ordered, “If you move, I’ll call 911.” she began punching the figures on her cell, her eyes still fixed on him.

The security guard, moved towards her to support her. “She’s not alone, two against one.”

The unknown guy swiftly turned to face them.

She could see his face. Those brown eyes. Why did they look so familiar?

His lips moved.
“There’s no need to call the cops. I’m actually searching for someone.”

The voice- it sounded strangely familiar. She’d definitely heard it before, but where? Who was he? She had to find out.
“May I know who you’re searching for? I could be of help.” She requested.

He grinned.

That was also familiar.

“Don’t know her real name. But have you heard of anyone called Melisa or who once called her self that?”

Her lips quivered. She sputtered. “M-Melisa?” She tried to laugh it off. “I don’t think there’s anyone by that name. I don’t know of any.” She denied. “Do you, Peter?”

The guard shook his head.

“I better be on my way.” he turned to leave.

“Wait.” She stopped him. “Why are you searching for this ‘Melisa’?”

He faced her again and smirked. “Reasons best known to me. Why are you curious about that?”

“Um… I…,” She was short of words at that instant. Carefully, she searched for the right words. “I might come across her someday, will want to help you find out. Of course, if its not for something evil.”

A smile played on his lips. “Thanks for that. Whenever you come across her, let her know it was Ernest,” he really stressed his name, “She’ll know instantly.”

Purity wasn’t comfortable being with this man- Ernest. She nodded and turned to leave with Peter.

He stopped her. “What’s yours?”

“I don’t give my name to strangers.” she replied without looking back. She resumed her walk with Peter into the compound. As they got into it, Peter closed and locked the gates while she marched into the house. She fidgeted while doing so.

“Purity, how was your date?” Prudence asked, flashing a smile.

Purity forced a smile. “It was great mama.”

“Can we talk about it?” Prudence pleaded.

“I really can’t, mama.” Purity gave an apologetic smile. “I wanna have my bath and rest. I promise to tell you about it tomorrow.”

“Promise?” Prudence repeated.

“Promise.”

Prudence opened her arms and Purity entered them. She clasped her hands round her daughter tightly. “Good night.”

Outside the premises of the Theodore’s the man that had introduced himself as Ernest sat on the bonnet of his car. He didn’t want to leave just yet. That woman, the woman he followed was very familiar. He had perceived her scent in the crowd at the restaurant. A man held her hand, making it easier for them to pass through. He followed them quietly. When he had passed through the crowd, he got a clearer view of her. She was definitely the woman he had been searching for, for nine years. He felt jealous seeing her with a man. Who was that man? It didn’t look like they were on a business date, they dressed casually. She was never to be with a man. He was the only man than deserved her. He’d make himself known to her. Soon. Very soon.

He heard the flowers rustling. It was a cool night, but the wind wasn’t blowing. The rustling continued. Could that be a wild animal or a thief? His eyes focused on the flowers, where the rustling sound came from. He caught a glimpse of a cloth. A man was there. He jumped down from the car and quietly opened the door of his car. He brought out a shotgun. He closed the door and tiptoed to the flowers. He stood erect and stretched out his hands with the gun in them. He placed a finger on the trigger.
“Come out now!” he command.

For some seconds, there was not a single sound. The man he thought was there remained silent. He remained still.

“I’m going to pull the trigger,” Ernest warned.

Purity moved quickly towards her room. She got to the door, opening it with her keys. Her hands were trembling. She struggled to unlock the door after about thirty seconds. She pushed it open, got in and bolted the door. She flung her purse on her bed and faced her pink drawers. Quietly, she got on her knew and drew the last drawer open.

There were lots of notepad in it. She dug her hands into it and began scattering them. It had to be in here. She wanted to confirm it. She prayed silently to be wrong, very wrong. It shouldn’t be happening.

The man outside, Ernest. That name rang a bell, no wonder he looked to familiar. She had seen him somewhere, but where? He said he was searching for a girl named Melisa. Melisa? How did he get to know of that name? Was there another Melisa? No one in her neighbourhood was known by that name. He must have followed her home. Yes, he must have. d--n! d--n! d--n!

As she thought more, her hands raked through the notepad fiercely. Determination led her into this. She had to be sure. Please, let it be a coincidence, she prayed fervently. It should be. Melisa? Ernest? She had been the only one who….

This was it. She finally found it. The notepad. It looked so old and worn out. Ever since that day, she’d never opened it nor brought it out. She’d hidden it deep down, hoping to shut it out of her life forever. Never to be called to mind. And right now, it had to be opened. Memories of her past, that day, flooded into her head.
16th July, 2005.

Ernest wasn’t sure if he was doing the right thing. It had to be. The gun was still pointed at the person he assumed to be a man. What if he wasn’t alone? His gang had to hiding somewhere. Were they for a robbery or kidnapping? Was it Melisa they wanted or her parents? Did she even have parents? He had to stop thinking and focus on what he’s about to do. They might outnumber him, but he wasn’t bothered. He’s a good fighter and an expert in handling guns. He was gonna have some advantages over them. He was surely going to protect his Melisa. He can’t lose her, a second time.
“I’m pulling the trigger,” he announced.

Terrified, the person got off the flowers and stood to face him. OMG! ‘Twas a woman!

The blue Volvo XC90 wheels furiously sped on the road of New York City. The driver was Jeremy. He was crazed with anger and fear. “Darn it!”

‘Very critical.’ ‘Act fast.’ ‘He said not to.’ The words Dr. Allan had to him kept echoing in his head. That further agitated him. His hold on the steering wheel tightened. He put his right foot on the accelerator and increased the speed of the car. He drove too fast, like one possessed by a demon. His anger. His fear. He really still doubted what he’d been told. He hadn’t come to accept what he heard. Why should this be happening now? Why should it ever happen? How am I going to cope? How will I survive this? He was d--n too absorbed in his thoughts. A tear slid down his cheek.

The siren of a police car could be heard. The vehicle was trailing Jeremy’s ordering him to pull over. Jeremy failed to notice that. He kept on driving. He had to get home quick. He really had to talk to his father. Patience, he didn’t have.

The wailing siren soon hit Jeremy’s ear drums. He quickly glanced at the door window of his car. He saw the police car following him. “Holy s--t!” Jeremy didn’t stop to obey their command to pull over. He just turned on his radio, increased the volume and acted as if no one was behind him. His car was still on a very high speed.

Fortunately, the street leading to his home came into view. He smiled to himself. A light at the front and back of his vehicle indicated he was about to turn right. He adjusted the gear lever, released his foot from the pedal, the car’s speed reduced. He turned successfully. As he made to move the vehicle further, the police car drove past him and stopped right in front of his vehicle. This was possible because he had reduced the speed of the vehicle while turning. They hadn’t, they took the risk. Jeremy was already on the move, to avoid hitting the car ahead of him, he slewed the car sideways and abruptly halted the engine. His vehicle was only a few inches from the police’s. He escaped narrowly. He sat back in his car, panting.

A woman? What was a woman doing out here? She doesn’t look like a killer. She was dressed in a close fitting pink gown. Wore flats and had a purse with a long chain hand- matching the colour of her gown. Was she a friend of Melisa? Or she came to spy on her. His Melisa was more prettier than she, perhaps she was jealous of her. He smiled within him. She’s so striking. He never withdrew the gun from pointing at the strange lady.

She in turn, kept daring him. Those green eyes of hers blazing with fury. She looked at him with disgust. From his foot to his head. He was dressed in a black suit and was quite handsome, but not as Jeremy. Her Jeremy. She scowled. “Aren’t you going to shoot?”

Whoa! Acting so tough. She was scared a moment ago and now she’s trying to be brave. He grinned.
“Don’t ask for something you don’t want.”
