If you so much love medicine, you can study hard and switch departments. I left secondary school 2005, went to maritime academy, did a national diploma in SLT in a polytechnic before I studied medicine. Today, I am a doctor. I don't want to live a life filled with regrets. It took me time, yes, but I have entered the field of my choice.

I like your spirit, brother! Congrats to you? In what school did you study Medicine, cos my school(UI) doesn't seem to admit SLT graduates to Medicine.

I will say Dr. Femi Adekanye, former President of CIBN and CEO of defunct Commerce Bank

As an under-10 kid in the late 80s to early 90s, I related with his extended family back home in Kwara. His family house was a stone-throw from ours. Anytime he visited home from Lagos, the whole neighbourhood stood still as everyone came out to watch his convoy of cars, usually Daewoo Racer and Daewoo Espero. I heard he was a banker.

Later, I read about him in the papers as Bank CEO. I vowed to be a banker like him.

When I wanted to write my UME in 2000, I chose Finance in Unilag, but my brother, a more experienced person, advised that I choose Economics in OAU(because he felt Economics is broader than Finance and OAU is easier to get admission into that Unilag).

I went back to my UME form, cleaned the course/school with Tipex and chose Economics/OAU.

I knew I can still become a banker with economics degree. But in 200L in Ife, due majorly to MSSN influence, I perished the ambition to become a banker and switched to oil and gas as my aim. I was fortunate to get an oil and gas job immediately after NYSC, and I have been there all my post-NYSC career, but as an accountant, not an economist.

I became an accountant by accident. I decided to write ICAN exams during my NYSC to keep myself busy. ICAN got me an accounting job post-NYSC and I have been accountant since.

Who influenced my choice?

1, Dr Femi Adekanye
2, My brother
3, MSSN OAU
4, Accident

PS: For full story of Dr Adekanye's influence on me, google my 2012 tribute to him, "Femi Adekanye: There Goeth a Mentor"
believe me you made a better career choice as an accountant than being a banker because of usury(riba)which they are involved with and which our creator fumes at.... I pray Allah put barakah in your handiwork in this world and reward you abundantly for it on the day of qiyaamh

When I was in ND 2, I wrote JAMB again to study medicine. Many of my classmates then attempted to discourage me because I was planning on starting from year one again. Initially I had entered SLT to use it for direct entry, but thank for my family and big cousin who encouraged me to pursue my dreams irrespective of time. I got admitted into medicine immediately I finished my ND. I studied in UNIZIK. Started from year one till d end. No regrets whatsoever...

I am an accountant although not Chartered but hope to. I love to save my money right from childhood days my siblings will buy ice cream with theirs but i would save mine in my school bag. My uncle was the chief accountant of my state as at then. I developed interest in the course because i loved to account for my money and get basic necessities with it. Accounting is a noble profession.

In my opinion what should influence your career choice are first your interest and passion because what ever you don't have an interest, you tend never to take it serious. Secondly, Your SWOT (Strength, weakness, opportunities and threat), this is very important because the fact you like something or interested doesn't mean you will be successful. You can read more about it here http://career.com.ng/factors-to-consider-when-making-a-career-choice/ .

Another important point i like to also talk about is the different between a career and a job. Some people don't know if they have a career or a job, sometimes because your job pays you well and probably get promotion doesn't mean you have a career. A job is the work you do to earn a living while a career is the work you do to also earn a living but earning a living is not the main goal but the general course of progression towards lifelong goals. In other word a job is just short term and a career is a long term.

You can learn more on this thread and also make your contribution https://www.nairaland.com/3059187/job-vs-career-whats-difference

Well, I was indeed ignorant cos back in my days, I was made to believe some courses were easier and we lacked good career counsellors. Now I know better, but pls, I'm not ignorant, I "was" ignorant.
