Nigerian Communications commission recently released figures on the 4 Major operators for the first Quarter of 2016. These figures showed that Globacom, garnered 1,448,354 fresh data customers in the first three months of 2016, representing 80% of the total number of new Internet subscribers acquired by all the telecommunications networks.

This article looks at how GLO was able to muster this large new customer base in the highly competitive industry of data plan.
Glo OfficeSurprisingly, in the reported period (between January and March), one of the 4 major telecom network lost 6.5 million internet subscribers, in the same period that GLO gained 80% new customer
Looking at these large data, Customer Intelligence comes to play. How does one Telecom company loss over 6.5 million, and another gains 80% of the new customers.

Customer intelligence (CI) is the process of gathering and analyzing information regarding customers; their details and their activities, in order to build deeper and more effective customer relationships and improve strategic decision making

I did a little searching and the findings were quite interesting. In the last 3 months, GLO has been one of the networks providing cheap internet plan. The Key word here is “CHEAP”.

With N1,000 you can get of 1.5GB. N2,000 for 3GB, N2,500 for 5GB and many more.
GLO BIS (for Blackberry) plan offers N1,400 and N1,500 for 3GBgLO

While other operators charge at least N8,000 for 7.5GB data plan Glo charges just 5,000 Naira for 12GB internet bundle offering you a lot more internet data access and value for your money.

Understanding Customer needs is very critical to gaining competitive advantage. Market data show for themselves; data consumers want cheaper quality data. Thus, GLO might have gained competitive advantage over the other major telecoms
Globacom’s dominance of Nigeria’s internet market in the last one year was also as a result from the massive improvement in its network quality.

In 2015, Globacom soared away as the preferred choice of new internet subscribers. At the end of the last quarter of the year, for instance, Globacom emerged the only network that recorded an increase in its internet subscriber base.
The network had 23,285,454 internet users in October, 24,952,559 in November and 25,082,066 in December, which is an addition of 3.2 million new internet subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Besides the improved data services, which followed the network improvement exercise carried out by the company, Globacom has also launched several attractive and user-friendly packages which offer a lot of appeal to data users.

In conclusion, understanding what the customer wants is very critical to gaining competitive advantage; it is also very important in gaining customer loyalty. Gaining 80% of new customer base is a clear indication that strategy applied is very favourable to the new customer, thus satisfying an important need. With this new social media age, (twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc), the internet subscription market is a very important industry in the telecom industry that should not be neglected. Thus, understand why and how customer consumer and change subscribers (Customer intelligence) is very important to gaining market growth.

Dataplan is so expensive and doesnt last long. I use etisalate (1G for 1000) on my andriod phone and it doesn't last for more than 2 week. I had to leave mtn (1G for 1200) which I was getting from a data plan reseller becos it wasn't lasting long also. Sadly I don't have a GLO line and am not ready to port or get another sim, so am stuck with Etisalate.
Lucky them
