The usher that humbled me.

The year was 2008.
I was heading towards my final year as an engineering student.

It was a season I was gaining exposure to things of the spirit. I consumed books. We were exposed to Pauline. We crammed epistles. I cannot forget Debo Adesina for this season.

We spent long hours of prayer on the Engineering workshop tarmac. I'm sure every campus has such places of visions and revelations.

So I was confident of doing 6/7 hours stretch praying in the spirit. We had been 'rehearsing' it.

I remember at that time, I had read a book 'walk of the spirit,walk of power' by Dave Roberson where the author had emphasized long hours of prayer in the spirit. I had been practicing that a while.

I then got an information from a friend about a meeting called extracool in Abeokuta. It was the days of MTN xtracool where you made calls from about 12.30am till 5am or so.

The Extracool prayer meeting was designed as such. To just spend protracted time in prayer from about 10am till dawn. I was excited.

The meeting was coordinated by brother Ransome Adewale and I went on the invitation of BWard Osiboye .

I met many pastors and leaders of different fellowships. The atmosphere was buzzing. The men looked like warriors. I was thrilled to belong to such an elite group. We were going to pray for about 7 hours stretch. I thought it was a big deal!

As we were about to pray, I saw again a lady I had seen at the entrance who conducted us in.
She was still at the entrance. I had taken note of her then because of how she dressed. She had on a gold neck chain and a low cleavage top. It was still modest but my traditional thinking expected her to be decked in something more 'prayer-related'. Her jean trousers defended the notion 'hips don't lie'. I just felt the dressing didn't fit in. But something about her was different. There was this radiant expression on her face at the door and it glowed as I still looked at her across the room.

And then I wondered what this 'small girl' was doing in an arena of giants.

Well, I looked around to see where she would likely sleep once the meeting starts. I concluded she didn’t belong to our company of 'deep guys.'

At 10pm sharp, Bro Ransome opened the meeting and exalted us with many words and the atmosphere was charged with the Babas ready to go.

Some tongues were already humming in the background.
One guy beside me was already quaking, lips trembling.
Another one was sounding like a servo from an articulated truck.

A part of me looked at some guys and wondered if they would last. I was coming from ibogun where we spent hours on the tarmac. If it was a contest, I thought out of 30 people, I should come at least 3rd.

That's pride cloaked in deception.

At the set time, prayers started.

It was a marathon so I knew to start slowly and gradually build momentum from Pauline prayers.
Only for these MoGs to start belching out torrents of tongues. I was immediately intimidated. Haba na. Me too, I get am for tongues na.

I get am for phonetic tongues with variations in pitch and tune. You can sound like a car cranking at one point or like a cricket chirping. Tongues dey this world sha.

No way, they must feel my presence. I sabi these thing wella.

So I switched to staccato mode.

Brrrrkeeeekeeeekeeee I went.

If they were getting into deeper streams, I didn't come here to play too.

Tototototootototkkakakaaaa.

Ha, zeal without knowledge will kee some people.

But God had a teaching moment for me.

My eyes drifted to the usher. To my amazement, she was praying too! And quite well too.

But I gave her just one hour to find a place to crash. I looked around to see where she could sleep later.

We kept on pushing. By the 4th hour the manifestations began.

Top MoGs began to lean on pillars and sit on the edge of tables.
Shouts had turned to talks.
High pitched whines had reduced to sustained rumbles.
Long winding statements had to slowed to paused statements.
Voices had turned to murmurs.
The machine gun tongues reduced to silenced pistols.
Heads nodded off, men slumbered.

But the usher kept going.

Eewo. Iro o. This girl no sleep?

To add to my consternation and shock, she began to walk around tapping the 'mighty men of prayer' who jumped up as if the lull in prayer was a trance they were having.

Eyin ke. E ti sun.

And she kept praying.

Iro o.

I kept praying too.

I won't fall by the wayside. God will not allow His holy one to see corruption. I should be the one waking her and even praying for her.

No o, I can't sleep na. He that keepeth Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers. That's my portion. I won't sleep.

He giveth His beloved sleep. That's her portion. She will sleep.

I was not going to allow her wake me. How can she? I secretly wondered if she drank a pot of coffee or had some aboniki balm in her purse.

I kept praying.
We kept praying.
It was a night of prayers.
Men prayed.

Suddenly I was taken up in a vision, it wasn't really clear. But I was watching something. I leaned in further to enjoy the scenery when I felt myself falling. I tried to quickly adjust then felt a hand tugging me and lifting me up on the chair.

Men and brethren, there was no vision anywhere I had slept off o Jesu! Tongue had turned to snore.

And yes, your guess is as good as mine.

The usher.

She had come to not only wake me but rescue me from smashing my head against the table. Talk of an angel at work.

I jumped off to start rolling off heavy vocabularies in tongues but I was a deer caught in the light. She smiled and offered me a sachet of water while still muttering in tongues.

I was embarrassed. I returned a weak thank you and she turned away.

Her eyes shining, body pulsating with some energy I couldn't figure.

I walked back towards the entrance and she was just pacing at the doorway in intense prayer.

Body weak me.

I looked around, others were in different postures of prayers to the God of heaven. Groanings filled the air. Faces glistening, shirts drenched while I slept.

I took off angrily in prayer.

See you.

The prayer meeting eventually ended in the morning. It was a really great time of prayer. After exchanging pleasantries with other MoGs, we dispersed.

I looked for the extraordinary usher. I followed her every movement. I purposed in my heart to meet her and get her number. She must be my friend o.
She started walking out, I left the mighty men and followed this sister.

Before I could cross the road, she had crossed and entered a taxi. I stood there mesmerized.
I rushed back inside to try to get info about her.
The only bit I got was that she was a 200L microbiology student.
I was humbled.

Ha, I must pass through Samaria or anywhere to meet her. But nobody had other information about her.

Looking back, I had looked down on her.
I didn't give her a chance.
I thought I had a more senior Holy Ghost with experience in praying and 'tonguing'.
I felt I was a more senior child of God.
I thought she didn’t qualify and belong to an esteemed set of deep people.
However,there is no monopoly with God. He is not a respecter of persons.

This lady probably had a more deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit than I did and she likely really did.

Her role was as an usher that day and she functioned well in that to make sure we all got into depths of prayer. I believe there was a grace upon her life.

She supplied water to many who were weak and tired.
I saw her tap many that day back into prayer.

Not once did she stall, not once did she lose steam.

Something within her fueled her calling and assignment and she was faithful in dispensing it.

She didn't seek to lead prayers or share a revelation. She stayed in her place of calling. She was faithful at her duty post.

I believe we birthed things in prayer that night.
I’m sure UNAAB felt it.
I’m sure IBOGUN campus felt it more.
Because of one usher who stayed in her place of calling and assignment.

There are many in the church whose roles are supportive ministers.
You may never be in the pulpit.
You may never hold a microphone.

Don’t be lured away by the glamorous and spectacular. Your calling is already supernatural.

You may be a levite whose sole job is to carry the poles of the ark of covenant.

Many ushers are anointed. You may want to listen to them when they tell you where to sit in service.

The prayer meeting was for me to reinforce the fact that God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the mighty.

I learnt my lesson.

By the way, If you know anyone who studied microbiology and prayed for 7 hours at a meeting with Bro Ransome sometime in 2008 and took a taxi facing Obantoko, I am still looking for her.
