I rent this apartment precisely in 9th mile Enugu since 2012 and the landlord increased the rent this year. Though all promises made from providing burglary for the windows water in the apartment were not met until i had to fix them myself which he was aware of. After the increment which fell into my last rent i was suppose to pay before packing out next month, i asked him what will happen to the expenses incurred for the fixes. It led to serious argument because he does not want it deducted from his rent. He said i should rather remove all the fixes which were actually his responsibility. The next thing i got was a month's quit notice which i know is very wrong because i am a yearly tenant which by law suppose to be given a 6 month's notice to quit. So lawyers in the house, i need advice on what to do because the notice was issued by my landlord's wife who is a barrister.

The best thing would be to talk to your lawyer.

you need to be wise Mr, look for a lawer or tell the madam your lawer will be ready soon. 6month or u both meet in court

Dont be scared cos she is a barrister, she won't be the judge.

The one-month notice is invalid, but u need a lawyer to get you the best deal out of this.

OP, you have two options.

1. Use your money for rent to get another house.
2. Use your rent money to hire a lawyer who can get you your statutory 6-months notice.

Hint* Tell your lawyer you want the matter taken to court IMMMEDIATELY and not discussions. The suit should be based on the illegality of the Quit notice. That way, their hands are tied from issuing you a new and valid notice or throwing you out. You'll end up staying close to a year there for free.

However, as an optimist, I'll advise you to begin to look for somewhere else. This situation may just be a promotion in disguise.

Thanks all...but this so called landlord is found of giving people quit notice to intimidate other tenants in the yard because his wife is a lawyer o...i ve just made up my mind to cut down their excesses using my case as a bitter lesson for them. I will follow up the case to a logical conclusion but i need to know if there are government agencies that can assist one with cases like this.
