I read somewhere when Kemi Adeosun said they have recovered enough money to sponsor 2017 budget. But how come we are still unable to pay salaries? We increased fuel and kerosene prices yet we cant pay workers. We have brought different charges and taxes yet we are still unable to take care of our basic needs. Am not someone that will blame GEJ or Buhari, but i think something is funadamentallly wrong with Nigeria. What is going on?? God help Nigeria oo cry

Nigeria is not broke, we just have irresponsible louts in office especially the dumbass that doesn't know jack yet insists on controlling everything that is why he will order release of funds just mere days to the beginning of a crucial game like the Olympics. We just keep picking or getting stuck with godawful demons for leaders. They globe trot, see the best of the world from the most advantageous of positions but never try to make this hellhole any better.

Oga Op, do you need a witch doctor to tell you that the country is poor? we are in a recession, do you know what that mean? it means not only are we poor but we are in debt, if Nigeria was a company it would been taken over by the government sad

OP Nigeria is 'broke' per say but that's not enough excuse for the poor treatment of our athletes
The issue or poor preparation and funding has been a main stay over the years, but this government has been the worst so far.
I heard Blessing Okhagbare say that she hasn't received any form of financial assistance whatsoever from the sports ministry since the year 2014 yet she remains our only medal prospect. This is absolutely unacceptable.
I no wan vex too much for this issue, but e dey pain me nor be small.
I advice young and upcoming athletes to work hard and keep windows open to get attracted by other countries for their own good.
Nigerian track athletes and weight lifters are hot cake in Asian countries.

What's the essence of sending people to such event who will come back home empty handed the way they went there.

Even ordinary string wey dem take dey tie medals, dem no go fit collect come show us for house.

If I was a paramount ruler of this country, I'd place an embargo on attending Olympics for 16years, build a world class games and sports city somewhere in the country, and place athletes and other genuine sports men and women under federal government salary for life.

Their job? To train, train, train to within an inch of their lives and hone their bodies to an almost supernatural strength and fitness.

Then well go take the world by storm and make the green white green stand tall amidst the rest... OK, I need to stop dreaming now...

Many Nigerians did not see where GEJ was takinng Nigeria too. Rather they focused on his body language instead of his works and they wanted him to be perfect and indeed with no flaws. Every president will always av their flaws. But d direction GEJ was us, was the right one.

D 3rd fastest growing economy in the world.
Biggest economy in Africa.
7% economy growth annually.
Number 1 investment hub in Africa.

Nigerians wanted a miracle. Only if they had given him another 4 years; we would av really seen d difference. Cos of greed of the northerners and the deceit they gave the west to vote GEJ out on tribal lines.
GEJ was not voted out based on performance rather on religious/tribal lines that got us where we are today.
The suffering, inflation, hunger, dissunity, civil unrest, unexplained deaths, unpaid salaries. All happened cos of some people who voted buhari in to put us on reverse.

Is it not funny 4 almost 50years they av been ruling us and only 4 years of GEJ rule. They want us to believe he his Nigerian most corrupt president. That is the grand scheme they av preached to Nigerians and majority av believed. Wen Gowon, obj, murtala, buhari, abacha, yaradua are not corrupt. Well the results will speak for itself.

And I know Nigerians will learn a big lesson in this 4 years of buhari rule. Cos I know d hardship won't recognise whether u r pdp or apc.

God bless Nigeria.

for now we don't have what you mentioned at the bolded, the least Nigerian government could do is to sponsor these athletes, election activities shouldn't be the only thing that should intrigue our politicians.

You know, I wonder why the government does virtually everything in this country anyway.

There are lots of stinkingly rich folks out there who could actually take this up as a philanthropic gesture.

With the way the economy is, it would be foolhardy to expect government to fund another fruitless jamboree all because we have to be there.

Last Olympics, we brought home Nada.

Quite painful if you ask me.

I understand your point of view. But in the real sense, it is whom much is given that much will be expected.

How do we expect our athletes to bring home medals when they don't have much support, good training facilities etc ? someone has to lay the foundation for them.

Is Kenya and Ethiopia richer than Nigeria ? But haven't we seen them having medals ranging from 1,500 to 3000 and 5000 meters race on several occasions?

We cannot hold these rich folks responsible if they refuse to sponsor sporting activities, hence the government still stands as the first people to hold responsible for our backwardness in sports.

Hence, my first post.

Let the athletes take a break from tournaments and really train up so that they can stop putting up mediocre performances.

You mentioned Kenya and Ethiopians.

You forgotten that running has become a way of life for them.

The only way their training will be successful is when they actually go up against other teams and contest so they actually get a feel for what d competition holds. If they keep training just here in d magnificent sports edifice u propose, there'd be no records to beat, it would become lacklustre like same old, same old.

The proper thing in my opinion is that we need that training facility up to international standard down here; sports has to become lucrative enough to attract investirs cos philanthropy doesn't just keep happening, they've got to get something back; the best crop of athletes must also go to represent us on d international scene. That way they weigh their performance against others because of the accolades they stand to win and with God motivation they'll certainly perform better.

In fact, if sports must really develop here then it needs to become part of our culture, a way of life if u will. We need sports academies, sports enthusiasts can be spotted from tender ages, sports n good performance should get promising sportsmen n women scholarships so they get an education and still get trained to join d competitive teams. Ballet, pole vault, volleyball, basketball, cricket, boxing, taekwando and lots more should be included and given substantial priority along with football n track events. There should be talent hunts that spot budding stars even from their remote villages.

If this can be done even crime will reduce cos industries can spring up from making sports kits n jerseys to training equipment...the whole vista is so all encompassing and is a veritable source of revenue for d country. If managed properly d government will not even need to fund it fully if at all within a reasonable period of time. The govt would then need to regulate and maintain an enabling environment. So u see, banning international competitions just for the athletes to train to within an inch of their lives for over a decade as u proposed may not necessarily be d way to go.

Then we are in agreement to a very large extent.

In fact, if I was emperor of Nigeria, I'd make you minister of sports.

But still I think they should be restrained from taking part for a while in Olympics.

Maybe not a total blanket ban. Maybe just Olympics.

Those years they're in training they could compete in others like All Africa games, Commonwealth Games etc just measure their progress.

Maybe it's just me cringing from and trying to avoid failure for Team Nigeria. Lol.

Nigeria can never be broke till the level that we won't be able to sponsor Athletes, the problem we have is the greedy Leaders superhead by the Dull President, if everyone knows hw much is being spent in Aso Villa per Day then you all will know that there's money in this country... We shouldn't allow anyone to be decieving us that Nigeria is Broke, tho the economy might not be smilling at the moment but not to the level of not being able to sponsor athletes
