1. TOYOTA FJ CRUISER

Meant to be a modernized version of the older Toyota Land Cruisers, the FJ is retains a lot of value while also bringing a lot of faults with it. It’s basically an off-road vehicle, but Toyota focused on styling it more than Jeep did with the Wrangler. While technically an SUV, the lack of cargo space means the term utility ought to be used lightly here. It speaks to the long-term durability that the Tundra, while not a big seller in the primary market, does much better in secondary sales. New truck buyers often go straight for the big American names, but the used buyers are often looking at different criteria. They typically want to know that a truck is going to make it to 200,000 miles without incurring massive repair bills, and that makes the Tundra a more appealing option to them

It’s actually a cousin of the Toyota Hilux Surf, which you may recall from TV footage of such third-world hells as Somalia and Afghanistan. Toyota simply put a different fiberglass shell on the Hilux, and away the 4Runner went. That said, the 4Runner’s pedigree means that it’s tough, powerful and durable. It lacks the ideal fuel economy of other Toyota models, but its four-wheel drive capacity is awesome.

9. GMC CANYON

A proper small truck is hard to come by in the American market, and that leads buyers to often purchase the next closest option. In the case of GMC loyalists, that means buying the Canyon. It pulls down an impressive 70-percent of its initial sale price when sold at the three-year mark.

GMC tries to market the Canyon as its small option, but we’re talking about a mid-size four-wheel drive that can run a Duramax diesel engine. It also comes in a crew cab model. Let’s be realistic. That’s not a small pick-up in the world of anyone who doesn’t speak fluent marketing talk.

The Canyon is meant largely for on-road hauling, and it doesn’t deliver the fuel economy you’d expect compared to bigger pick-ups. The low air dam makes it borderline useless for off-road purposes. Its gorgeous interior, however, will make it a superb choice for guys whose truck is also their office.

10. HYUNDAI AZERA

Full-size cars never retain the same type of long-term resale value that other vehicles do, so go ahead and take a deep breath and lower your expectations. That said, the Azera still holds onto 54-percent of its sticker price when sold after three years of ownership. It’s six-cylinder, 3.3 liter beast that has 293 horsepower. It includes lots of interior styling and technology options too.

It’s also known for its safety record. It comes with parking assist capabilities and brake assist features that will have the commuter and soccer mom crowds feeling a bit better about it. It has also won numerous awards within the full-size sedan market. If you’re looking for a car and want one that looks the part of something more luxurious, it’s hard to go wrong with the Azera.

The Colorado is about the closest thing to a proper light pick-up that you can buy these days from an American manufacturer. The Colorado is a close cousin of the GMC Canyon, and it many ways it actually sports sleeker design elements. The newer editions now come with more power thanks to an option diesel engine.

The older Colorado’s look a bit smaller, older and cheaper than the current model, and that’s something to be aware of as buyers tend to avoid vehicles that look and feel dated. The Forrester appeals to a much narrower market. In primary sales that’s a bad thing, but in the used market that means you’re selling the vehicle to a specific group of people who know and love the car. People who desire something smaller than an SUV want the Forrester. Subaru’s legendary all-wheel drive capability leads folks to keep the Forrester a perennial favorite in its class within the used vehicle market.

14. LEXUS GS 350

We’ve talked a lot about trucks and SUVs, and there have been a few cars mentioned. Where’s the luxury, you ask? Frankly, luxury vehicles tend not to hold up as well in the aftermarket. Lexus, as Toyota’s luxury emblem, does much better than other makes in the luxury car class. That’s where the GS 350 comes in.

After three years, you can expect the GS 350 to retain between 52 and 63 percent of its initial sale price. Why does it hold up so well? It has a 306 horsepower motor that allows it to go from o to 60 mph in under six seconds. It also includes a wide range of tech-centric features, such as on-board navigation and apps. It also includes climate controls and adjustments for every seat on-board, allowing every passenger to enjoy a luxury experience.

15. HONDA CIVIC

The Civic is an annual top seller in the mainstream car market. It comes in lots of variations too, including four- and six-cylinder models, and you can also purchase it as a hybrid.
