As a Commonwealth Scholarship Alumnus I recently received this e-mail (attached below) and I think it might be of help to some Nairalanders.

Dear Nigeria Commonwealth Scholarship Alumni & Scholars

I am emailing you today as an ambassador for the Commonwealth Scholarship scheme to ask for your help in promoting and encouraging applications for 2017 Commonwealth Scholarships in the UK, in addition to letting you know about Commonwealth Academic Fellowships to which you may be eligible to apply.
Please see detailed below further information on the scholarships now open, so please do make friends, family and colleagues aware of these fantastic opportunities. All details are on our website as well as our social media accounts -

Commonwealth Academic Fellowships in 2017
You may be interested to know that some former award holders can apply directly to the Commission for an Academic Fellowship in the UK. Commonwealth Academic Fellowships aim to assist the career development of recipients by providing an opportunity to undertake research as well as to network and to update knowledge and skills. Fellowships are for between three months and ten month’s duration and are tenable at any approved academic institution in the UK. As well as nominations for Fellowships being invited from universities in developing Commonwealth countries, the Commission also invites our doctoral Alumni who meet all our eligibility criteria to apply direct to us for an Academic Fellowship.

To be eligible to apply through this Alumni route, a Commonwealth doctoral scholar would need to have been awarded a PhD by a UK institution between two and ten years prior to October 2017. They would also need to be from an eligible Commonwealth country and currently employed as an academic in a university in an eligible Commonwealth country. The Commission requests a reference from the executive head of the employing institution as part of the application and this would need to confirm that leave will be given if a Fellowship should be awarded.
Further information at: http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/apply/academic-fellowships/
Closing date for applications 15th November 2016

Commonwealth Alumnus

As a Commonwealth Scholarship alumnus you should be receiving twice yearly copies of our magazine ‘Common Knowledge’, which can also be viewed online at - http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/common-knowledge/

Try the DfiD Commonwealth Shared scholarship scheme. You can apply directly to the UK institution of interest.

I did not apply via the FSB. Honestly speaking I do not have confidence in any selection process involving Nigerians. We have a way of cornering such opportunities for children of the super-rich who don't even need the scholarships in the first place.

I applied directly to the UK institutions. I applied to three schools then: UCL, Kings' College and University of Loughborough. I got the UCL award.

I wish to apply for PhD in Mechanical Engineering but I do not have any of the following GRE/SAT/TOEFL/IELTS but I collected letter from my Universities for 'Certificate of English as a Medium of Instruction and Examinations' hope this can serve for English Proficiency.

Secondly, do I need to contact any supervisor from those universities of my interest before applying Kindly advice

Whatsapp (08030781881) , email: purevalueproject@gmail.com.

Thanks in anticipation.

I will advise that you sit for TOEFL or IELTS as soon as you can. The scholarship is highly competitive and you have applicants from all commonwealth member countries. If TOEFL/IELTS is stipulated as a condition, it is important that you have it ready.

I am not sure the kind of luck I had will help you. I was offered the scholarship before needing to sit for either of TOEFL or IELTS. I then contacted the UK institution and convinced them to wave the exam which they did.

And yes, it is imperative that you get in touch with your prospective supervisor as soon as possible. This is extremely important for a doctoral degree. Getting in touch will greatly simplify your life. And in case you don't get the commonwealth scholarship, he/she just might have insider information about alternative fund.

I wish you the best.

If you are applying for the Commonwealth Shared Schorlaship Scheme, no you do not apply through the Nigerian board. I just checked the official website and found out applications for this year is now closed. For those that will be interested in applying next year, here is an excerpt of how to apply in their official document:

HOW TO APPLY
You should apply to study an eligible Master’s course at a UK university that is participating in the Shared Scholarship scheme. For a full list of participating universities, see pages 6-7. For a full list of eligible courses, visit http:///cscuk-shared-scholarship-courses
You must make your application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS) – information on how to use the EAS, including detailed guides, is available at http:///cscuk-shared-scholarship
Before applying, you must check with your UK university for their specific advice and rules for applying (some universities may require you to complete their own application form as well), and for their own closing date for applications. For a full list of contact details, visit http:///cscuk-shared-scholarship-courses
You can apply for more than one course and/or to more than one university, but you may only accept one offer of a Shared Scholarship.
All applications must be submitted by 1 April 2016 at the latest. Each university has its own closing date for applications, and most fall before 1 April 2016. You must submit your application by the date advised by your UK university.
The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the EAS to your UK university or applications directly from individuals; such applications will not be acknowledged.

Confirm the deadline for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships. This is a different type of commonwealth scholarships that doesn't need you to apply through nominating bodies. You apply directly to the UK schools.

What you posted has nothing to do with the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships Scheme which doesn't go through nominating bodies since the host universities directly nominate their candidates.
