You, being one of two kids get $250,000. Now, you're frugal, have a 401K already, live below your means, and weren't planning on this money. So you put it into a trust ($250,000 earning a modest 8%/yr) for your two children. They wouldn't be considered a "trust-fund babies," but if they left it alone, each of them would have a cool $4-million dollars after 40 years.

Now, what if you bought a speed boat, a trip to Italy, and an in ground pool instead investing it? Your children leave college (in debt) making $35,000. They're smarter than you, so they'll put 8%/ year into a 401K, get wage increases along the way, etc. On average, they'll retire making $105,000/yr with a little over $800,000 in their 401K at retirement. Only $3.2-million less than they would have had.
