Why Many Of Us Graduated From School Unclad. What Our Lecturers Never Told Us! by lawrenzi(m): 9:31pm On Dec 28, 2016
At school, there were some people we looked down on basically because they could not make good grades or failed some courses and had to rewrite them. Many of them were academically poor to the extent that we thought they will never make it in life, we thought that since they could not pass exams excellently then they were going to be a monumental failure in life. We were brainwashed by some of our Lecturers who told us that, those with First Class will become lecturers or work with the oil companies, those with 2.1 will find themselves with the government or a better company monstrous paycheck, we were told that 2.2 is not a grade you should come out with not to talk of 3rd class!

Are schools preparing us for the outside world?
I strongly believe education is about inspiring one’s mind, not just memorizing dates equation and facts half of which many of us never remember after graduation. How many of you who claim to be graduates of institutions of higher learning can remember most of the things you spend countless nights reading at the university? In fact I can say that many of us forgot what we read the moment we left the exam hall. Many of us found ourselves running to class in the morning so that we could find a comfortable spot to seat and rest our heads and probably take notes and attendance.

According to Sulie Breaks he said "After four years, five or years of mental frustration and depression, there are no Jobs after school. I am not saying school is evil and bad, all I am saying is reassess your motives and understand the kind of education you need". If your dream in life is to work for someone then going to school is the best for you, but I have come to realize that if you don’t achieve your dreams someone else will hire you to help them build theirs. Redefine how you view education, understand its true meaning, you must understand that education is not all about reading about other people’s subjective opinion all in the name of passing an exam. Sulie Breaks further claims that, "there is more than one way in this world to be an educated man".

No school system will admit they are preparing a child for the outside world, that would be admitting to failure, in fact what many of them will tell you is that they are preparing the children for the outside world. At the university I had a Lecturer who uses a note his Lecturer used in teaching him in the 70s and when he comes to class he is proud enough to tell us how useful the note is to him and how he has been keeping the note diligently and that the same note was used by his Lecturer’s teacher too. There is nothing bad in a Lecturer keeping a note that was used when he was in school, but teaching his/her students with the same note is an anomaly that needs to be corrected.

Many people graduate from school knowing well they have something that have not been developed, (their talent or Skill) this is why you see many Nigerian graduates go into skills acquisition immediately after school, if our schools were solid enough to teach us this, then no one needs to go back acquiring skills after school.

Before now, all a person needs to do was to go to the university; you are assured of earning more money than those who did not graduate from the university. Today it is no longer obtainable, even our Lecturers today are not among the richest men in the country, except those lucky enough to have political appointment, other legal or illegal source of income. Times are changing and we need to change with time. We have been told that for you to make it in life, you must finish university, have a university Degree, if possible masters degree and if you can wrap it up with a P.HD, then you can never go poor.

We were told that if you don’t finish university, you will not be successful, but the sincere truth is this, the richest men and women in country today are not with certificates, or better still are not using their certificates to make a living. They are those who simply knew that their certificate will not guarantee them the financial freedom they want.

The world of tomorrow belongs to those who can take proactive steps in ensuring that what happened to their parents does not happen to them, it belongs to those who proactively prepare for what in today’s world, is likely to be an uncertain future. Our parent always told us how things were a lot easier in their time, and there is no sign it’s getting better anytime soon. We can expect new and different challenges… as well as opportunities.

Please I want to quickly state that I am not against Education? Not at all, but what type of education do we get from our schools? What do our lecturers tell us while in class? Many of us want to get a good education to get ahead in life: how many graduates really go ahead with their degrees after school?

There are a lot of things our lecturers never told us while in school. They never told us that our accumulation of good grades does not mean success in life, they should have told us that the books, materials and handout we were asked to buy will not determine how far we go in life. Maybe we should have been told we need to read other books that talks about money, about becoming rich, about our attitude to work and life in general. Maybe we should have been made to know F in school does not mean one would fail in life and A does not mean we would do excellently in life. If they don’t tell you these things, it is time to tell ourselves that becoming a graduate does not equate to becoming successful in life.

If they had told you, would you have believed them? Besides it wasn't part of the course outline.

If your parents did not tell you how do you expect a stranger to?

Anyways, I think your education paid off, how else would you have written this long essay?

Interesting points raised!

One shouldn't blame the institution for failure in life, that blame is better thrown at the individual then the government. The institution teaches you to become qualified as an expert in a chosen field NOT necessarily to become successful as an expert in a chosen field.
Since the conditions seem to be below standard in most Nigerian universities, the primary aim is most often not achieved.
Re: Why Many Of Us Graduated From School Unclad. What Our Lecturers Never Told Us! by Nobody: 5:19am On Dec 29, 2016
I agree with the OP but some instructors tell you the truth. My very first clinical instructors told me face blank that gpa doesn't equal success and she had never hired a nurse based on her gpa but rather her personality. She literally told me it's good to want to have a great gpa but education isn't all about gpa and it was the learning that mattered.

Did I believe her then? No.

Do I believe her now? Yeah.
There is more to education than reading to pass exams and there is more to success than education. At the end of the day everyone's definition of success is different. We can't all entrepreneurs and we can't all work under someone. I think it helps if individuals have their own goals and start working towards it before graduating. Sometimes it involves simple steps like becoming more proactive or even reading books on self improvements or books by mentors. Socializing a little, making connections and making use of opportunities that come by.

I have been telling my course mates this since year one, but nobody dey gree look my face. Infact they snub and laugh at me when I come late to class, fail to submit assignment, get excess E and F when results comes out but they fail to realise that I've been busy engaging myself in different money making hustles (educating myself in the street and businessman kind of life and making money while they were busy reading things their ancestors read just to get an A or C) . What they don't know is that the Schooling system is a scam, just cos you are good with equations and able to remember definitions doesn't make u prepared for the real world. We need to change this view, the world is change and we need to flow with its current

Thanks op for this write up, being a university graduate is a total waste of time. Alot of our youths are wasting there time in the university only to graduate and become jobless due little or no skill.
Instead of wasting your time in the university is better you invest your time on Lynda, tutplus etc and learn professional skills that can be monetized be it writing, programming, accounting, graphic design, leadership skills etc. Learning from Professional makes you better off than the useless certificate PhD holders that we have in the country.
Being successful in live or not is all about choice, it is about your ability to think different and Stand out from the crowd that makes the difference.

There are 2 sets of men in life: those who make their own destinies and those whose destinies are made by others and circumstances.

Which one am i, and how am i working towards it? This is the right question one should be asking every blessed day, for in this country of ours, to be successful is not by mere saying or thinking of it; rather by working and committing towards the right goal you set for yourself. Not forgetting God as well because we can't all do it alone.

“The idea of going to school and getting a job is the most destructive one in your brain."

“The trouble with school is they give you the answer, then they give you the exam. That’s not life.

Everything the working class has been told to do, the rich do not do. That is my message.”

As much as I like your post, let me state some facts: if you graduate with a 2.2 or 3rd class, you can never ever work in a multinational company.

You can't directly do your masters in Canada, you must do pre degree of some sort. So many perks comes with good grades but it doesn't guarantee any success and financial freedom. Schools train you to be experts in a field, the rest should be done by our parents and self discovery.

The fault lies with Nigerian schools not schools in the western world that equip their students mentally. The greatest fault lies with Nigerian parents as they have failed to educate kids on financial freedom and how to make it in life.
The rich parents are busy giving hand me downs to their kids. How many rich kids have successfully founded their own companies, they always take over.
The poor parents are too religious and leech off their kids who would go to any length to belong to the upper class, most not all.
