Are Barcelona following Real Madrid's 2011 Ballon d'Or shun precedent? The FIFA awards gala on Monday night will not be attended by any Barcelona players after the club cited their upcoming match with Athletic Club as reason enoughto skip the event, but they're not the first club to do so. Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, and Andres Iniesta are among those named in the FIFPro Best XI and yet they have made a snap decision to stay away from Zurich, with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu joining board members at the ceremony instead. Such an act is not without precedent, however, with Real Madrid taking the same decision in 2011 due to travel commitments regarding an upcoming match with Malaga.
