I use Honda accord 2006 model made or used in Canada which behaved strangely to me on a trip from Warri to my village.

Due to long distance from Warri to Onitsha I decided not to use air conditioning since the road is mostly free of potholes. The weather was very hot; on getting to Onitsha I noticed that my temperature control was approaching red mark, I pulled over and opened the hood only to notice that the radiator fan was not working.

I looked for electrician which checked all the fuses and confirmed them okay. The guy suggested that he can make the fan to work by connecting relay and by passing some connections which I objected. I was about looking for another electrician when out of curiosity I decided to on the air conditioning and behold the fan started working.

My question: is that the cars are made in such a way that at higher temperature you must use air conditioning , because if I had allowed that guy to connect the relay the car might have been destroyed.

Have anybody had the same type of experience.

Engines are designed to run at a specific temperature (mostly 90deg) and the cooling system (fan inclusive) is meant to keep it at that temp.
The fan is meant to activate when designed temp is reached.
What that electrician was advising to do for you was to make the fan work permanently as long as the engine is running, and as a result, would be under cooling your engine which would result to more fuel consumption.

But your temp gauge nearing max is a strange, probably you've got your thermostat removed or faulty.

Thanks Emperoh and Dantitki, except that particular incident there was no other problem, although i had issue with nigerian police because on my registration paper the engine no is recorded as starting with R, while it actually start with K.

I had to part with my hard earned 2,000. Those people at registration office i dont know why they usually made such stupid mistake.

I will advice you to let standard/mature rewire/technician look into the problem for you,simply tell them to run relay any moment you ON the engine it will keep rolling the fan,this is neccessary to cool off your engine all the time your engine is ON,likewise tell them to check your radiator, if it is a single cell,advice also to change it to double cell and the problem will be over ever. I got similar problem like that in the past and these are measure taken and ever since no overheating ,u know Nija road traffic everywhere.Best of luck

I don't think there is much difference between American and Canadian cars
Like Dantiki said, your fan won't be working till a very hot temperature is attained
Nevertheless, i think something is bad due to the point your temperature got to. . . hope u had water in the radiator and your
gear selection was normal. . . . .also, i think u should use AC on high way journeys, they help reduce drag and as such fuel consumption!!

You mean travelling a long distance with your /C on help reduces fuel consumption ?

@ poster, make u tell your mechanic to remove the thermostat, or u can remove it urself, the fan is controlled by the relay linking the temp sensor, once it gets to a defined temp, it triggers it on full blast, when the AC is ON, whether the engine is cold or not the fan would work although at a reduced speed.

Naija is too hot so, the engine temp would surely get to the required level fast enough for excellent combustion to occur, hence I dont really think we require a thermostat,
