The conscience of the nation #UNILAG_13

By citizen juwon.

It is now safe to conclude that management of the university of Lagos (UNILAG) are gradually sliding into despotism.

Are they even aware they are public servants? Does the Vice Chancellor (VC) know the policies of his administration can be challenged by the students (who are the primary reason for the existence of the ivory tower)?

Students are no longer being rusticated for vices like rape, exam malpractice, cultism, theft, etc etc etc. The new order now is, protest and lose your studentship.

Whether you are made to write exams on bare floor or not, the VC's understanding is, students must comply like robots or lose their studentship.

Whether they share their dormitories with rodents like bed bugs or not, the order remains, keep quiet, endure the malady, get your degree and get out....

While we are faced with leadership crisis, higher institutions that are supposed to be breeding generations of critically-minded leaders who will be diametrically opposed to mediocrity, are doing the exact opposite.

I perused the event that culminated in the rustication of 13 UNILAG students and I feel more hopeless for the system we run in Nigeria.

The cruel manner in which conscious students are being rusticated with a view of silencing majority of the disenchanted ones calls for the intervention of CLO's and well meaning Nigerians.

13 undergraduates are currently behind bars at the kirikiri maximum prison, not because they have committed any known offense. But because they clamor for the reinstatement of their colleagues and better welfare.

Where is the conscience of the nation?

Would a Gani Fawehinmi have allowed this madness unchallenged in his lifetime?

The real criminals in govt. are walking around freely, enjoying their ill gotten wealth on the roads they fail to build and students who are made to study in one the worlds harshest condition of learning are held up in detention site, built for hardened criminals. Yet the country and its cyber space are busy talking about big brother Nigeria?

When will the victimization of the powerless conscience by the conscienceless powers stop?

I concede NANS is a failed platform, but what is ASUU, NASU, SSANU, JAF, TUC, NLC doing to solidarize with the oppressed UNILAG 13?

I hereby join the National coordinator of the education rights campaign (ERC) Hassan Taiwo Soweto to call for the unconditional release and reinstatement of the UNILAG 13!

Remember that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
The inaction of the masses to injustices like this is the reason police will continue to unjustly arrest and extort the innocents.
