“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”

:Charles Darwin

In today’s economy, and for the benefit of all generations, it’s better to expect the likelihood of abrupt job changes and perhaps even more frequent interregna. I've allways been an advocate for self development as I believe that that way, you can keep up with changes that occur in your environment. For those of us who anticipate many years of working and actually relish opportunities for learning and variety, my advice is to always be prepared for anything.

1.Flexibility Abounds

Because the work place has gone digital, employees based in an office can often take their work on the road, which provides opportunities to live closer to family, relocate to a new city, travel, or simply work from home in your pajamas.

2.More people are working for themselves

More people became self-employed in 2010 than during each of the past 15 years, according to Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. For example, a Millennial nowadays, even if they have a regular job, still tend to have a side hustle that earns them money.

3.Job hopping is a trend nowadays

Unlike our grandparents and even parents, Millennials aren’t likely to stay with one employer for the rest of our entire career. In fact, by the time most people hit 30, they already have experience with several companies under their belt. This trend can work for you if you know how to manage yourself and your earning capabilities excellently.

4.Work-life balance is a priority.

Employers trying to compete for talent are meeting these demands in creative ways. Offering flexible work hours and free lunch in some cases. If your company doesn’t offer the lifestyle you’re looking for, be thankful as life could be worse and to be quite frank, you do have a job; something most people lack. The onus of balancing your life and work now falls on how creative you can be.

5.Personal branding is the rave of the moment

Making a name for yourself is smarter than ever in this volatile economy, increasing your chances that someone who knows of you will come to you with a job rather than you having to look for one when you need it. One way to maximize personal branding in a way that it reflects positively on your career is by doing social media right; have a course you’re dedicated to, connect with like minds and maintain a specific identity.

6.Long term unemployment might be here to stay.

Nigerian Bureau of statistics shows that more 23.45 million people have been jobless since 2015. Although innovations are happening every day and new jobs are being created, it is beyond obvious that these jobs are nothing compared to the number of people that are unemployed.

Considering the fact that a lot has and is still changing in the job market, you need to, in plain terms, up your game. Here are a few things you can do to avoid being left on the side of the road, career-wise, as the world moves past you:

1.Look at what’s changing.

Without getting clear about how things are changing in your company, it’s impossible to see how you may need to do your job differently.

2.Stay current.

You may also need to find additional sources of information about what’s changing outside your organization. In order to know how you might need to change, in order to succeed, you keep up with what’s happening in your field as well as your company.

3.Find exemplars.

If your job now requires you to behave in ways that are new, discover some people who are already good at the stuff you need to learn. People generally love to share their wisdom and skill; it makes them feel acknowledged and respected).

4.Be willing to be a novice.

One of the hardest things about doing your job differently is that you’ve probably gotten good at doing it the way you’ve been doing it – and trying new things means, by definition, that you’ll be a novice. Learning new stuff when you’re not a kid anymore takes courage.

5.Change your mindset.

Which brings us to the core requirement. In order to keep changing, growing and evolving in your job (which I believe is essential to success these days), you have to change the way you talk to yourself. Notice your self-talk (the mental monologue running inside your head) on the topic of your job and change.

With the points above implemented to the letter, you won’t have to be worried sick anymore with regards to changes in your job.
