A message has been circulating all over whatsapp this evening encouraging people to spread the good name of our country, if you get this message do good to pass it on as this is a commendable initiative. The message is below:

Good evening fellow Nigerians, My name is Ohanyere Uzochukwu and I hope this message meets you well. I am an average Nigerian like most of you, I have my misgivings about society and the government, the government has failed me in as many ways as it has failed you and for that I am angry, I've noticed that Nigerians have really low political expectations but our leaders have persistently failed to meet our meagre dreams and our country has been raped over and over again, this has led in no small part to the way our country is seen internationally. Ask an average American about Nigeria and the first thing that comes to his mind is "country of internet scammers" this was even featured in the series "Being Mary Jane " where someone was to visit Nigeria and he was warned about our 419 boys. Nigerians are being executed in countries like Indonesia, recently CNN on one of its televised shows "GPS" mocked Nigeria and Nigerians on the state of our President's health. My country, YOUR Country! Is being mocked in the International scene, we have become a laughing stock so much so that small countries like Cameroon have the guts to insult our "territorial integrity" without fear. Nigeria has been brought to its knees and can only stand again through our collective effort.
It's all about perception, America is what it is today because it has maintained a glamorous image, the American people sing the praises of their country, they have "I ❤ NY" and "Proudly American" shirts all over the world, as the Nigerian slang goes "all na packaging", we also need to package ourselves properly. There are Nigerians doing great things Internationally, achieving unattainable feats, crossing human boundaries in all corners of the world but the media won't carry this, all they focus on is Boko Haram and scammers because it's what sells but there's more to us as a people than that, the ones who do these things do not represent the entirety of the Nigerian people. We are peaceful, we are industrious, we are extremely intelligent etc. Dr Bennet Omalu, Chimamanda Adichie, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Imafidon family and a host of others are Nigerians, Nigerians in the diaspora are some of the most educated people in the world according to verifiable statistics, we are achieving great things all over the world and even at home too. The CNN insult infuriated me personally not because it is untrue but because people focus on the bad and sift out the good.
This is a call to arms, not to carry guns and machetes but to arm ourselves with all available social media outlet and tell the world that THERE IS MORE TO US AS NIGERIANS, we should forget our bigotry for a while,our individual differences and agitations. We should show the world our resolve as a nation, we should show them the Nigerian spirit, the flame of patriotism that burns within us and most importantly, we should set the world straight on its misconception of Nigerians.
This is an appeal to your inner patriotism, to get our message across I ask that we all go online tomorrow evening *6/8/2017* at 7pm and tweet using the hash tag *#perksofbeingnigerian* about the good things about being a Nigerian, the great things achieved by Nigerians in the past and present, the potential we have as a nation. If our leaders cannot help us, we should help ourselves. We should change the narrative concerning our country.
