Civil war not against Ndigbo — Gowon by mekusxxx: 4:40am On Feb 13, 2010
Gowon is a bloody unrepentant liar

12 February, 2010 02:55:00 ATIM IKPEME

FORTY years after the Nigerian Civil War former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has said the war was not  against  Ndigbo but against those that wanted to destroy the country.

Gowon made the claim on Tuesday at the special presentation of the TV series entitled,  “Nigeria: The Series” held at Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He said, since the series is about telling the Nigerian story as it should be told it was pertinent to clear the air concerning the Nigerian civil war.
Gowon said the  war was not to fight Ndigbo but to find a better way to settle the rift in the country then.

“Nigeria as a country would have been a failure if the Igbo race had been allowed to leave the country Nigeria because they have contributed immensely to the growth and development of this country,” he said.

Gowon said it was high time Nigerians believed in their country and supported its project.

Also speaking at the event, former Vice-President, Alex Ekwueme described “Nigeria: The Series as an attempt by the producers to look at Nigeria from inside out.

He urged all to support and sponsor the project as it was telling the Nigerian story by Nigerians and with Nigerians in full participation.
Obi Asika, CEO Storm 360, executive producers of the series, said it would be tracking the development of Nigeria from 1860-1960, a time in the life of this country that many do not know about.

The series, when on air, will be run on the local television stations, international stations in America, Europe and Africa as the Nigerian story is a global one that connects a lot of people, places and continent.

Lloyd Weaver,  TV series producer from Serengeti Network said that, the series is essentially the victorious struggle for independence and how Nigerians found a singular unity of purpose to be where we are today as a country.”

The 13-episode series will take viewers on a journey through the lives, events, stories ad controversies that shaped the birth of Nigeria and enlighten, inform, uplift and entertain Nigerians both at home and in diaspora.

Representing the Minister of Information and Communication, Prof Dora Akunyili, CEO Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), Alhaji Garba Bello said the project was timely especially as the ministry is leading the rebrand Nigeria project.

She said for too long Nigerians have left others to tell our stories and that it is time to tell our story ourselves while commending Storm 360 and Serengeti Network for taking the lead in that area.

Seems Gowon was high on something when he made that stupid statement.

If his claim is true that the Biafran War wasn't an attempt at genocide of Ndi-Igbo (for wanting to leave a union wherein her sons and daughters were being massacred by the thousands) then why weren't war criminals like Benjamin Adekunle tried for war crimes after making this quote and obviously backing it up with rounds of ammunition:

"I want to see no Red Cross, no Caritas, no World Council of Churches, no Pope, no missionary and no UN delegation. I want to prevent even one Igbo from having even one piece to eat before their capitulation. We shoot at everything that moves, and when our forces move into Igbo territory, we even shoot things that do not move,  "
Benjamin Adekunle, a.k.a. "Black Scorpion," Commander, 3rd Marine Commando Division, Nigerian Army.

May God punish Benjamin Adekunle in this life and the next. Bloody bas.tard!

Re: Civil war not against Ndigbo — Gowon by Onlytruth(m): 8:48am On Feb 13, 2010
What does anyone expect Gowon to say? He should stop insulting us with all those lies, that is what makes reconciliation difficult.

People like Gowon should realize that his lies are still killing people, even 40 years after the war. How else do we explain the fact that Nigerians are rounded up from riots and instead of being taken to custody and charged according to the law, they are taken into the open spaces and executed in full glare of the public -the exact acts carried out by Murtala Muhammed in Asaba and Onitsha in 1970?

It has even worsened now because the executing policeman and soldiers these days value their bullets more than the citizens Gowon claim to be securing in the Nigerian nation. Until people like Gowon own up to their lies and crimes against humanity, the Nigerian nation will remain one huge human execution theater.

^^^ The barbarism championed by the Nigerian government in the late 1960s to decimate the population of Ndi-Igbo have metamorphosed into an ugly monster that dictates everything from:
* Police shooting civilians for not bribing them enough.
* Soldiers shooting and ra.ping civilians, burning down whole villages and murdering captured militants in cold blood.
* Extra-judicially executing arrested rioters, passersby and onlookers with impunity.

The reality is that every Nigerian is a potential victim of this monster:
* Militants from the Niger-Delta - captured prisoners are brutally executed with the executions taped and watched as entertainment by despicable members of the Nigerian military.
* Sect leaders in northern Nigeria, e.g., Boko Haram's leader Mohammed Yusuf who was murdered in cold blood - he was given no trial whatsoever.
* Commercial vehicle operators in the South-West, e.g., Lagos, where members of the Nigerian Police routinely murder passengers, okada drivers, bus drivers/conductors and pedestrians for not giving them enough bribe.
* MASSOB members in the South-East - some were arrested and summarily executed by Nigeria's barbaric security services - no opportunity for a fair trial was given to them.

This severe devaluation of life has its roots in the Biafran War.

~Bluetooth,

You must be a fool. Was it an Igbo man that made Gowon talk that crap? Or, is Gowon an Igbo man?

A former head of state made a statement and we are analyzing the inherent nonsense in the statement. What is your problem?

When potential rebels plan to have a newly independent state orchestrated by a traitor who suddenly loses the coercive backing of the former imperial power and whose military capabilities are new and untested, there is likely to be civil war.ojukwu fought a costly war which he couldnt win but he is a big coward for abandoning his people and went on exile.

the discovery of vast oil reserves in the Niger River delta had
tempted the Igbo dominated South-Eastern
region to annex in order to become
economically self-sufficient. Prior to the
discovery of oil, Nigeria's wealth derived
from agricultural products from the south,
and minerals from the north. In general, it
seems fair to say that the results from all indication are that
oil, minerals and other ‘loot-able’
resources are connected with the civil war.Northern Nigeria, up until around 1965, had had low-level demands to secede from Nigeria and retain its agricultural wealth for Northerners. These demands seemed to cease when it became clear that oil in the southeast would become a major revenue source. This further fuelled Igbo fears that the northerners had plans to strip eastern oil to benefit the North, following the exclusion of easterners from power. With oil now flowing in the Eastern Region, the way was now open for the implementation of the secession Civil war which ojukwu later declared.

The Northern cadre in the Nigerian Army wanted to secede from Nigeria right after the July 29 1966 coup.  Their British and American masters told them not to, because there will be no money, no seaport, low standard of living, so all of a sudden, they were shouting "One Nigeria".  How ironic!!!!

i disagreed with you.Gen. Ironsi promoted many Igbo in the Army at the expense of Yoruba and Hausa officers, and was accused of perpetuating the brutal killing of Yoruba and Hausa leaders. The Northerners in particular saw it as a deliberate plan to eliminate the political heavy weights in the North in order to pave way for the Easterners to take over the leadership role from them. Resentment grew in the North which led to the May 1966 riots throughout the North during which Igbo residing in the North were attacked and killed.so the north were the least to ever had a dream of secession even though they had always be privileged by the british

Half education is indeed dangerous and when you add gross ignorance and extremely low level of reasoning things become too bad.

Don't be in a hurry to post anything. Take time to read and comprehend before typing. You are making a fool of yourself even though you think you are making sense.

And before you begin to say people should prove you wrong let me remind you that if every single nonsense people put down is corrected there won't be enough time in the world to address these things.

I have sympathy and regret for the civil strife between 1966 /70 that culminated in the civil war and have said so on many
occasions. Our Igbo folk should thank their Chi for the tremendous recovery rate and entrepreneurial acumen that has
put them back on stream and we all join them in the process.

Some of them are still fighting the civil war, in a senseless fashion , goaded by older fringe elements that have failed to
recognise that the war is over, using moribund Goebellian propaganda tactics. Even the cold war is now fought by the West
on the economic front. The economic front is where the Igbo are comfortably positioned in this country. What is required
is a progressive shift to the political, in due course for the betterment of the Igbo and Nigeria.

I am very unhappy when I see these misguide persons at work.

So, the Igbos do not have a right to respond to comments made about them by the head of state when a war was waged on them? Stop seeing everything through a tribal prism and unless you are suffering from inferiority complex I see no reason why you will not comment on statements that tend to discredit your own people by those who should know better.

Civil war not against Ndigbo — Gowon

“Nigeria as a country would have been a failure if the Igbo race had been allowed to leave the country Nigeria because they have contributed immensely to the growth and development of this country,” he said.
Gowon said it was high time Nigerians believed in their country and supported its project.

According to Gowon the Igbos have contributed immensely to the growth and development of this country and yet he led a group that massacred Igbos from the barracks to the prisons while his people killed innocent Igbo civilians even when they chose to return to the East.

You guys can bury your heads in the sand for all I care but no one should come here and spread silly lies all in the name of using a public discussion forum.

you made me laugh, mekuxxxx. you fun,

let look at Gowon statement.
Nigeria as a country would have been a failure if the Igbo race had been allowed to leave the country Nigeria

Is nigeria now not a failure??   Nigeria is a failure,  Gowon and his generation are less than 15% of the nigeria population and you can see secession coming from boko haram, OPC, Moosob and all this group. 70% of nigerian do not share Gowon thinking.   They want it divided. So Gowon is in the minority.  It was a good dream that never worked out. We woke up along time ago. How long do we continue to lie to ourself.

I have extended family in  Nigeria and I do not want them to be killed in Nigeria because Gowon want nigeria to be one by force. People should considered other people who form majority in Nigeria inplace of self , the safety of others matters too.  The money some nigerian have made should less important than the lifes of people at this moment. And the need to drop self interest. HUMAN LIFES MATTERS.

I am sorry Mr Gowon , you have your good quality but , honestly most nigerian believe many of your generation are living in the past. Your generation which want nigeria most remain by force are living in the past.

my premise on this civil war and biafra ambition had always been neutral even though i dont support sececssion of any tribe from the current nigeria.economically, everyone agreed the igbo folks are doing fine but they have been politically sidelined over time which personally i believe is unhealthy if we are to canvass for a national unity.complaining about the past every time any igbo issue comes up will only continue to drag nigeria backward and the igbo tribe in particular

Stop confusing issues. This thread is about a statement credited to Gowon about the people he and his people killed and everyone that was affected has a right to comment on the statement.

I don't know how this has translated into Igbos complaining.

Maybe it will be better for you to stop talking about neutrality and side anything, that would be easier to understand.

In my opinion Biafra remains a project that took place between 1967-1970 and you won't ever see me shouting about Biafra because a lot has changed since then but I will always object to lies and misinformation being peddled against my people (the Igbos) anytime any day even when such lies have been passed down from generation to generation by bad people.

The Biafran War remains an open sore for all of Nigeria. And we all know what happens to sores when they are not treated. They get infected!

In addition, the East will always remain a place of contention as long as oil flows through its veins.
