Police Re-Open 24-Year Rape Case Against Sahara Reporters Publisher

The Nigerian Police have reopened investigations into a 24-year University of Lagos (UNILAG) rape case, which involves the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore, who in 1993, was a Geography student at UNILAG, also served as the cultist-backed student union president, where he was known as “Show Boy.”

According to the Police, in Surulere, Lagos State, towards the end of his tenure as the president of the union, police archives show that there were an alarmingly large number of rape-related cases on the UNILAG campus.

The archives also reveal that due to the influence of Sowore and the violence meted out against students and administrators who opposed him and his cult, many of the affected girls who were the girlfriends of the opposing cult group members, failed to report several of the rape cases that were well known in UNILAG at the time.

However, the reopened case has focused on a particular 1993 rape case, which was investigated under the command of Mike Okiro, who was then the Area Commander of Surulere.

The case reports show that one Mr. Omoyele Sowore, born on the 16th of February, 1971, was invited for questioning regarding his involvement in the sexual assault of a female student of UNILAG.

The investigation notes also described the assault as “graphic”, stating that the primary suspects were Mr. Sowore, and two other male accomplices whose identities were not known by the victim.

Okiro, who went on to become the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force, disclosed in 2013 that following the allegations of rape against Mr. Sowore, he (Sowore) sought the help from some individuals in the international community to secure a traveling visa to the United States under false pretenses.

“I arrested him when I was Surulere Area Commander of the Nigeria Police. I prosecuted him and he jumped bail”, Okiro said.

In the past, Sowore bragged in an interview with an online platform, News Express, that he has been arrested at least 8 times and that he met Okiro in 1993.
