They still use it, not just in Africa but also all other continent as well. The two teams that qualifies for finals from each continent will battle it out in the World Cup event.

It's now 5 countries in Africa to qualify.

Some naija sport journalists arent really vast in general sports. Most are only stuck to EPL.

No sir the system has been changed to a qualifying series, home and away games will be played. African is grouped in to either 4 or 5 groups can't really remember at the moment.
