Hi everyone, I'm starting this thread to request help from the nairaland community in troubleshooting the issue I'm having with my car.

I drive a Toyota Corolla, it runs perfectly fine without the a/c on, but when I put on the a/c on a hot afternoon in traffic, the car starts overheating.

My radiator has a single fan, functioning for both the radiator and the condenser

I have visited a mechanic, who scanned the car. He replaced the a/c relay that controls a manual a/c compressor and the engine thermostat. But he left the fan running directly with the ignition because the compressor was not controlling the radiator fan when we put on the a/c.

I have flushed the radiator and steam washed the condenser. Then we refilled the cooling system with red abro anti rust coolant. And bleed the cooling system.

I tested the car in heavy traffic and it still overheats. Please what do I do now??

How often do you top up your radiator coolant?

Does your coolant level reduce?
Does fan speed increase when AC is turned on?

I check it daily, since we changed coolant and it hasn't reduced. The coolant is still gauged.

No the coolant level doesn't reduce. I don't allow the car to boil over. Once I notice that it's over heating I turn off the a/c and the temperature returns to normal (i.e. mid way up the gauge)

The fan has been set to always be on the highest speed, because the manual compressor doesn't have the sensor to control the fan when the a/c comes on.

Check the wiring system that connects to the fan. It's possible one of the wires is chopped of by rats or heat. You need to take your time to observe this.

Prior to this issue, any history of overheating before?

Seek out the low and high speed fan relays in the fuse box as well as the direction of air flow.
Do you still have thermostat?
Whats your car's year of manufacture, mileage and location?

I'm not sure, I got the car recently.

Yes it has a thermostat. I just replaced that.
Year: 2008 with a 2012 system.
Mileage: over 150k
It's in Lagos

The mechanic scanned the car and checked all the wiring to the radiator fan. I'll check myself, though. Thanks

Your radiator fan is a single one ,so the possibility of your fan nor working is Nil in the case you describe above .If you need to check anything related to fan, check the direction of flow!!!

How old is your radiator??

I had the same issue on my Toyota with the car overheating once the AC goes on. It used to take about 10 minutes to overheat.

I can't say I totally solved the problem, but nowadays it rarely overheats with the AC on. I still get that one or two occurrences when the temp spikes a bit with the AC though, but it's very rare now.

I think your radiator might be clogged. Cleaning it won't really do much, as opposed to buying a brand new one, not a second hand please. You can by an aftermarket one if you can't afford the oem one. As long as all the ports are correct and its brand new, no blockage and no internal corrosion.

Next you may want to check you AC gas pressure to make sure your condenser isn't getting waaaay too hot. Ideally the car should have high and low pressure refrigerant sensors, but some of these mechanics may have tampered with them and your AC may be either overfilled or underfilled.

Can you leave your hand on your AC condenser without getting burned

op, do what this guy says and post back. check the temp of your condenser. if it is too hot to touch, then their is a problem with your Ac system. you should be able to place your hand on your condenser even on a very hot day without getting burned.

Get a double fan
Increase the cells
Change the coolant
Or have it washed

Check your Brian box . If the Brian box is faulty this might occur
Another is if any of your fan is not working as it should . It maybe rotating but weak . Test the fans

My brother, please change your fan, the Speed of the fan is lower than normal. I was once a victim. Ignore the speed test by your mechanic, they are clown. Try this and thank me later.

Change to double cell radiator, remove thermostat completely, permanent the fans, check the polarity of the fan whether is it blowing inward or outward you can use a nylon to detect that. Follow all this steps and enjoy your corolla shikena

supported.... apart from ur radiator, how "sound" is ur engine. A/c is another load on the engine... did u work the a/c on it or it's factory fitted? However, Ur radiator may be small or clogged. Just as advised above.... go for better one....
