Ok, now check this out.... A person studying geology, in year 1, takes courses frm maths, phy, chem, bio, stat, etc. If u dnt do well due to less experience, yr g.p. crashes! U may end up fighting over carry-over till u graduate. In yr final yr, the amount u spend for yr field trip & project alone is sometin else. At the end of it, most of u end up with a 2-2, 3rd class & even a pass. How many of u make 1st class or 2-1? How many of you geology graduates can do a simple log interpretation which is v.important for geologists? ....whereas those in Geography, Computer science, etc make 1st class, & 2-1, and when Shell, Chevron, and others call for 2-1 holders, how can d geologists get there?? Even recruitment personnels do not understand how weighty geology is, that a geologist can fit into allmost every areas. A geologist with a 2-2 or 3rd class can even do better than other natural science graduates with a 2-1... 2 Likes 1 Share |

OluwasureGig: Don't be scared bro. Just make sure u finish well, serve Ur country and come join the hustle train. Just ve an open mind as u might not practice geology. What matters is getting a decent job that pays Ur bills. Open ur eyes for opportunities, they are there only if u search well. Have faith and pray to God for favour and grace. |

miteolu:Really? Do you know the number of Geologists working in the exploration sector of the oil industry? Do you know the number working in the solid minerals sector including the cement firms? Do you know that Geologists can be self employed by running borehole drilling companies? That so many Lawyers today are poor or working as land/house agents does not mean that law as a course is useless because there are others too who are gainfully practising. |

BiafraIShere: borehole drilling what common plumbers do. Friend, Nigeria is not accomodative for some professionals. Truth be told, geology is for those students rejected in other faculties. |

The story line is close to reality as I know some who are not practicing the profession because there is no platform to do so. The only manage with low paying jobs, and those who are lucky to get employed by Multinationals or big companies still dont practice, but branch out to the business of the company they work for. |

ayusco85: Lol, you should be happy you are putting your knowledge to use. Even the banks no longer recruit as before. Many Earth Scientist will gladly accept any position in any field provided that it will pay thier bill. Long gone are the days of looking out of place anywhere. |

miteolu:No company or even a reasonable person with money that will go for quacks to drill borehole for them. I gave you many instances aside borehole. What about Mech Eng, Chem Eng, Pet Eng etc graduates that are jobless and riding okada does it mean that those courses are useless? You can believe what you want to believe but it does not change the reality on ground. |
