The WESPA (World English-Language Scrabble Players Association) Championship enters its final stage with the top two players determined, after an exciting 32 game qualifying tournament just completed in Nairobi, Kenya.

Akshay Bhandarkar of Bahrain will play Peter Moses of Nigeria in a best of seven game final, after proving themselves the two best players in a tournament of over 100 players from over 30 countries.

Defending Champion, Nigeria's Wellington Jighere narrowly lost out of a place in Sunday's final after suffering setbacks in penultimate rounds leading to the deciding finale. However, Moses Peter has proven to be the tournament's dark horse after putting up superlative showings against almost everyone on his way to the final.

Moses, like the biblical prophet, defied odds to upstage the greatest Scrabble player of all time, Nigel Richard, for a place in the final, in a game that remains one of the most pulsationally followed by the Nigerian Scrabble fraternity back home. From the closed WhatsApp platform "Nigeria Scrabble Friends" where live feeds from the game between Moses and Richard was being relayed, move by move details was not available because the annotation of the game was unavailable. With Moses condemned to win to be assured a place in the finals, his compatriots deployed the Nigerian-ness in them and began to pray. Such was the display of oneness and unity during his final game.

Long story short, another Nigerian is on the threshold of history in the intellectual sport we so love.
God bless Nigeria.
