LIBRARY IS NOT A WARE HOUSE.
It always pains me when I heard library and information science student can not give a divine definition of what library is.
people in the society and other professional courses believe library is where book are stored. Nowadays library is not just a ware house where u can dump book and keep them. A library is differ from record center or an achieve.
A library is primarily set up to select,acquire,organize, store and make accessible to users.
According to Ajidahun(2004) any library that cannot meet the information needs of its users is a moribund and anaemic information system.
the systematic selection,acquisition, organization and dissemination of information materials not mere label distinguished a library from reading room or a store house of books.
According to S.R RAGANATHAN a librarian and information scientist who gave the five law which all library most posses.
1. Book are for use.
2.Every users his books.
3.Every books its users.
4.Do not waste the time of the users.
5.Library is a growing organism.
Through all these rules make me decide to give a good definition of what a library is all about. at my own perspective O.A OLAMILEKAN, library is a knowledge and information bank. what I mean about this is that " library is a building that deals with process of acquiring of useful recorded materials (printed or not printed ) process them, select ,and store them for the purpose of reading, researching,in order to keep them for the posterity purposes.
many librarian have give so many definition of what library is all about.
According to KAYODE JOSEPH, a polytechnic librarian said " A library is a repository for various form of recorded information(either printed or non printed materials) in his book titled WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LIBARY".
According to Encyclopedia Americana, define a library as a place or building where books and non books materials are kept for the purpose of reading and research endeavour. in advance country library is more valuable because they believe that is only the library you can get the adequate information without being wasting any time. library is now made accessible even when you are inside your house or place of work. most library of nowadays do not store books on shelves anymore because technology as took over.
information is now stored on computer, librarian acquire all the necessary information from the publisher or printed houses the whole book we be on computer online system. as for me O.A Olamilekan I love librarianship. it make me proud whenever I saw other profession falling. librarian is a custodian Also librarian is a dispenser of knowledge, this make me proud and gives me privilege that through reading am different. Today I may be broke,it may be boring,silent and suffering(challenges) but I know and believe that through reading am not alone. Readers are visionary leaders proudly an information scientist.
