this is my own experience

associate with senior colleagues who are already doing well. Most have already passed through this stage and the information they have is invaluable, for eg how each lecturer sets his/her questions, the way to go about answering questions, which information to seek out on your own and not forgetting that the kind ones would lend you books and materials

form a rapport with lecturers. this doesn't mean you should get overly friendly as that is usually dangerous, just establish a sort of polite relationship with the lecturer. sounds sometimes a single mark is all that matters and who knows what your friendship would get you, I can count the number of A's that I had lost hope on only to check and see an A

shine your eyes. questions leak, answers leak.. don't form jjc and let it pass you bye but take heed never carry any stuff into the exam hall. make use of it and trash it, sometimes questions change so don't let it be your only hope but don't just let it pass you bye

always have a plan for the day. what would you eat when you get back, how many hours of sleep do you get, do you wash on Friday evenings so that you can use the whole Saturday to read

do projects and assignments for colleagues: the more you come into contact with a piece of information the more it sticks. would you charge for your services ? that is totally up to use, most times I do it free as I'd rather prefer you owe me a favor than cash

don't rush your learning. you're in mech engineering year 1 but you already want to know how to build a car abeg take am jeje. I'm not saying you shouldn't read wide but focus on your curriculum. do not devote greater time to a topic that isn't a necessity, read wide but don't digress too much
there a lot more to add like tagging along with smart people but overall give baba GOD HIM respect
