Calculus simplifies most mathematical problems, especially engineering. Mechanics is in engineering.

Anyway, it takes a minimum of 8.5 sec to cover the said distance.

Both calculus and graph provides same outcomes but calculus gave it in less than 2 minutes, graph takes a longer time.

Calculus is not just studied for studying sake, it is studied because of its application in places like mechanics.

But in calculus, you simply differentiate the applicable equation (s=ut +1/2 at^2) with respect to t, then equate to zero to find the minimum value of t.
