Hi nairaland, am about to put in my first jamb, I always want to be doctor or dentist. I av radiography sudent as a brother, he told me dentist is a good profession but wat really shot me down now was he said why study the mouth when u are so intelligent to study the whole body. Am confused, does that mean dentist study the mouth alone.
Nevertheless I still love the proffesion.
Dental student in the building, pls enlighten how things are going on over there in term of lecture, exams and job prospectives.
Plzz give ur view on this two profession.

Do medicine but if you really desire to do dentistry,then go for it.
The students studying both courses do the same subjects till the fourth year.

I think you should go for the less competitive(dentistry). And also both Doctor and Dentist save lives.
And the last: A Dentist is a surgeon.

In addition to all comments, they earn the same amount! Not a kobo difference

Go for dentistry my dear. It is the best course to study on earth. It is the most lucrative health course to study. Medical radiography is nothing compared to it. Dentistry is not just about the mouth alone. There are different area of specialization in dentistry just like medicine. Radiography isn't bad either. Dentistry is more taxing than mbbs @ first as you offer the same courses and then some.

Just do your own personal research on both courses, as both has their fair share of challenges especially in Nigeria.

Yes my dear. But Salary and income are not the same. Salary alone does not make a specialty lucrative. The bulk of money most doctors make comes from locum consulting and private practice viability and this in turn depends on the volume of patients in that specialty. If it were just salaries then no medical specialty would be classified as lucrative. Some o&g specialists consult in as many as 5 to 7 clinics in a week and are paid per day for consultation and expensive procedures. And this procedures (C.S for example ) comes regularly. Imagine him performing 5 cs in a week each netting him about 150k. Plus other procedures and the income from his busy private clinic. U can imagine how much he or she makes plus their private clinic which is always busy. That's lucrativeness. Or a neuro? That's my point.

I responded to a similar thread on this. For us in the academia, we really don't have too much issues on the dichotomy that ensue between Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and Dentistry and Dental Surgery (BDS). We know better.

The two courses are wonderful professional courses. Despite the similarities and distinctive peculiarities at some points, graduates from both fields work together and are under one professional body.

Lately, I have come to realize that many of those who engage in watering down either of the two courses are usually not doing any or tried to get into either, but couldn't.

So, my brother, think about what you really want and more importantly, commune with your creator, God, and find out from Him where He would have you fulfil purpose in life. To be successful as a graduate of MBBS and BDS, you have to work real hard.

Are you being serious or you're trying to make a joke out of this? (Politely asking ) cos I've seen previous threads where you mouthwashed Dentistry to nothing.Lol

It's beyond 4th year. While MBBS & BDS students do same courses up to 4th yr, in d 5th yr, dental students will still join their medical counterparts in 600 level (final yr) to do MEDICINE & SURGERY for that whole year. Note: medicine & surgery is a final yr course for medical students which they do 2geda with 500 level dental students as i said earlier. It's d same scoring, d same exam, d same clinical work that both will undergo in this course. So, 500 level dental students still do 600 level medical courses throughout their 5th yr. Hence, dental students don't stop doing medical courses in 4th yr. So, d difference b/w MBBS & BDS in undergraduate level is not that wide. It's all about name. People think dentistry is about teeth or mouth, which is a fallacy. It's only d professionals that know dentistry isn't what pple think it is.
