The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the Zamfara State University, Talata Mafara, as the 162nd university in Nigeria.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, who announced the approval of the university yesterday in Abuja when Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, visited the NUC to present the strategic document for the establishment of the university, said the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), TETFund and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had been appropriately informed about the activities of the university, adding that the approval is for immediate effect.

He noted that before now, Zamfara was the last state in the country to establish a university.

“Every Nigerian will see the merit of long planning when the university becomes fully operational,” he said.


Rasheed, who commended the governor for his initiative in establishing a world class university, stated that the most concentration of universities in Nigeria are in the southern part of the country.

Meanwhile, the governor has approved N3 billion for the initial take-off of the university.

Yari, who said the dream of Zamfara to establish a university was as old as the state, stated that there was a need for university education to be made available for all irrespective of their social background.

He, therefore, expressed delight that the old aspiration of establishing a university by the state was realised during his administration.

This is a very welcome development. The people of Zamfara can now boast of their own State University. A state without Its own university is an island.

We need more industries not schools.

I really do not know how to view this news, while it would have been a good one, I don't think more universities is our problem in Nigeria anymore.

The existing ones are in decadence and should be rejuvenated.

Is it just about jobs and admissions? How have they maintained their polytechnic and the college of education? Has zamfara been able to fill its quota at the federal University Gusau? These are penitent questions we should be asking. Pupils are still learning under trees and their schools are full of unqualified teachers who cant teach in English due to the poor pay yet he is here talking of a university.

We need revamping of our universities, not new ones... Though its a good news for the state...

A govenor that can't pay waec & neco for the final year student of the state,establishing a university no sense.

well I want to believe that d university when it finally takes off would b populated by students from other zones of d country. Even Kaduna state university and polytechnic isn't populated by Kaduna indigenes that much, rather u may think they are institutions owned by igbos and plateau ppl
