If you know the state of Nigerian Hospitals you will prefer to take "agbo" for a disease than go to one of those things we call hospitals. Doctors are no better - lazy, unmotivated, egotistic-over-nothing and even quack.

I just would like to hear your own opinions and have you share your experiences at any Nigerian hospital.

I hear they've chosen 7 hospitals to be reformed, anyone as a list of the 7 hospitals or just tell me, is LUTH included?

What is the service supposed to be like in a modernised hospital?

I'm sorry but I disagree.
My Mom used to work at Igbobi, Shomolu in Nigeria and i used to go there everyday.
And i saw how diligently the Nurses and Doctors worked to help the patients.
Maybe some doctors are lazy, unmotivated E.t.c but there are good ones too.

Sure there are always good ones, but its the ratio we need to worry about - perhaps 1-1,000,000
What about the hospital itself - tell me its standard and I'll call you a liar

I don't know about the overall standard of the Hospital because i only stay in mom's ward.
And I haven't been there in 2 years so i don't anything about how it is now.

I agree that Nigerian hospitals are not standard but it is not the fault of the doctors.
The govt has the responsibility to equip the hospitals and they r not doing that so what do u want the doctors to do?

i believe nigerian doctors are giving thier best bearing the circumstances.sure some are very bad but majority have thier moral duty at the back of thier mind.

u should see how under-equipped nigerian hospitals are.yet doctors work in those conditions and bring out something.most european doctors cannot work in the conditions nigerian doctors do.

Why cant be a way the hospitals in nigeria collect money from the government if they treat poeple with no money

they say doctors are caring people but in nigeria,

so many people especially people wh ohave had accident are turned back from hospitals because they are not registered there and because they dont have money !!! na wa o, im sure these are the same people that would be smilin at u in church doin actin big men kmt!!!

Nigerian doctors work under the most demanding conditions-no facilities,no drugs,no water,no light,no better salary,a demanding society,family and friends expecting a certain standard of living,and people always for asking for their financial assistance and free treatment! Who won't be de-motivated!!
Turning away accident victims,is not the doctor's decision,but hospital policy.WHY?! Because of inadequate facility if a serious injury,but most importantly,because of police involvement/harassment. Same reason people with bullet wounds are rejected.
There may be a few out there who are unscrupulous. BUT most harm are done by quacks,but qualified medical doctors bear the brunt and get the blame. ?Not everyone who works in the hospital is a doctor,not everyone with a ward coat is a doctor!

Not all doctors are bad but i had the misfortune of visiting one hospital in owerri cos i had some complication during my pregnancy.The stupid pride and rude doctor was recieving a call while working on a woman i dont know what he was doing on her but i remember he was doing somthing in her womb cause her legs were spread apart he did not cover his stupid mouth and the woman had to wait while he was jisting and laughing in front of her whatever he recieved 3 diferent calls from friends calling to say hi.The same doctor ignored a woman in labour for like 5 hours because the woman was scared of having a C/S he said she was wasting his time and left her unattended she was shouting and crying saying he should plse come i couldnt sleep from her shouts as imy room was close to the labour room when he was satisfied that she had learnt her lesson and do the operation the baby had died.In my case i was bleeding a little and the bastards couldnt carry out a scan because they usually do scan on thursdays and tuesdays so if bleeding starts on friday you have to wait till Tuesday to get a scan.The scan revaeld that the baby was dead which now i wonder if they were correct.I wish i knew where i was i wouldnt have stayed i was verry sick i was taken there unconcious and dint know about their weaknesses untill it was too late.To crown it all they say the doctor is 1 of the best gynea in the state yea yea

ive heard all kinds of horror stories about hospitals in naija. its scary. especially from women having babies. some of those stories are so shocking. you get no attention, no privacy, no compasion, no nothing. they seem to be immune to what you are going through. even if salaries are not paid its no reason to take out frustration on innocent victims patients.

my friends had their babies in naija. they told me how they were beaten and hit and yelled at to push. i could not believe it cos when a woman is in labor she is vulnerable and almost at the point of death and should be treated with great compassion. its advisable for a loved one to always be with you during that time so you can keep an eye on what they are doing.

i had my baby here and i couldn't have asked for anything better. the nurses and doctors were sympathetic, compassionate and kind. no one beat me up during labour.

this isnt to say that we dont have good doctors and nurses. but these complaints arent one- off things , they are becoming too rampant and common. its almost like a norm.

what a pathetic story. but if i may ask, who is this so called best gynaecologist in owerri? i grew up in owerri and i think i may have an idea of almost all the hospitals there.

however, i must add that Drs, and Hospitals in nigeria are part of the general nigerian rot. every good Dr in nigeria wants to go out and practice abroad. let's remember the conditions of our hospitals. as a student in UNICAL, I once went to the teaching hospital and saw a lady being delivered in the labor ward and NEPA struck. the generator had no fuel. the doctors had to work with candle. i've seen doctors setting intraveinous lines at FMC owerri with candle light at night. harnnydarl have u asked why scanning was only tuesdays and thursdays in that clinic u went? the reason may be baffling.

one more thing, people should be wary of private hospitals that they are not sure of the competence of the doctors there. b/c private hospitals are not only for medical treatment, they are also profit oriented. see. so they can do anything to raise funds. be careful.

some few years ago, my mom's friend was admitted into the hospital for pains and other sickness. she was discharged after few days. 2weeks later, same pain started again. she was rushed to the hospital and discharged few days later.

so the third time she was admitted, i went with my mom to visit her. she told us she will be discharged the following day. when we went to see her in her home, she was in very serious and terrible pains.  she kept telling my mom, i have this bad and horrible pain in my abdomen, when i piss i feel so hurt, i was listening to their conversation. on our way home, i told my mom i think she has gonorhea. and penecilin is what i read will help. my mom was like where did you know that from small pikin? my mom always love to listen to my health stories which i read in mags. i told her i read it from the various Healthcare Magazine daddy always buy (anyone remember that magazine? i think it's like monthly magazine.

so my mom out of pity for her friend went back. and was telling her friend maybe she had gono. she was like what is that? her husband heard and then rush to the chemist to buy the penecillin. he knew how to give injection so he gave his wife Peni injection. when we saw her the following week, she was all smiles and healthy, !!! i will always remember that for the rest of my life, as young as i was then!

i hate the doctors there, some are so randy. Once I went for rabbies injection after i thought i was bitten by a dog. the doctor gave me a list of what to buy but added that it was a scratch and i will be fine without injection. but if i want to play safe, that was fine. then he started toasting me, i just listened to his rabbling how beautiful, how good looking and many other blah blah. I looked around his office and saw a wifey picture of their wedding. i was like what! he continued and wanted to take me out to lunch. I said okay when next i come for the injection. As i was leaving he started handling and tapping my backside. I was pissed and scared. i told him i will be here soon for the injection. he then let me go with a big grin and all smiles (for the big meat coming the next time i guess). With that, I rushed out. I never went back !!!

why were you listening to him? by listening to him you have encouraged him. you shouldn't have listened to him at all. medical ethics forbids doctors from toasting their patients. the guy had done his duty as a doctor and instead of letting you go he started toasting u right in his clinic. that was irresponsible (wether he was married or single it was wrong) and u were very wrong for listening in the 1st place

well, with a doctor who is making toasting and talking about dog bite, you wouldn't want to leave. so i had to just listen to him. don't forget i had dog wound on me and wouldn't just run out. its not his clinic. it's a military hopital (just a lil correction)

any Dr who toasts his patients is irresponsible . they are the bad eggs of the profession. no matter how good those Drs are professionally, once a Dr toasts a patient, he is a bad Dr. when people say Drs are womanisers I often ask, did the Dr rape anybody? when girls give them the encouragement to toast. which man, born of a woman, will not follow through a line of encouragement to get a girl he wants?

even if the hospital is Aso rock, the fact is that he is on duty and has no justification whatsoever to toast a patient. Drs toasting nurses aint acceptable (unless he toasts her after work).

anyway, good you ran away. beware of them Drs. who toast on duty.

when i was a student in nigeria, we used to have this maxim about girls that ". . .audience is consideration". meaning that once a girl starts to listen to a toaster it means she is considering him seriously. b/c a girl that is not interested will not even give an ear to a toaster.

I did not ask them why they do scan only on thursdays and tuesdays i guess like you said they were trying to cut cost by paying the guy hwo does it for twice per week.They dont even have any incubator and i saw a baby that was been given drip in a crib in the nurses office can you imagine that? a new born baby in a small office with scatered file, one window and 6 nurses all talking at the top of their voices. he keeps the keys to the pharmacy and i had to wait for 1 full day to get pain killers and i was in serious pain the nurses couldnt help cos Oga doctor took the keys to the pharmacy cos it was sunday i wonder if there was an emergency with any patient how they would cope without drugs.To a patient who just comes to see the doctor take priscription and leaves the hospital is good cos you wont see whats happening inside but when you get admited and you stay for a while youl know that not all that gliters is gold.

anyway, just be careful the kind of private hospital you go to.

i once went to a dentist in nigeria and he tried to molest me right there on the dentist chair. i was younger. it was so shocking because my dad brought me on the first visit so he didnt try any stunt. the next time i went back alone to complete the dental work. he locked the door and started groping me. he was Hot as hell and breathing like an elephant on heat. i was young but i can swear i saw a hard on. i was so scared. i protested and started crying. he let me go. didnt tell anyone.
the moral of the story is that whenever any member of your family is in the hospital (especially an underaged girl) there must be someone with her not only does their service suck, they are known to harrass patients sexually!

seun i know. but when you are young you dont know what kind of reaction your story will get. you dont even know what word to use to describe what almost happened to you. now im older and wiser. and if anyone even looks at me lustfully i will file a sexual harrasement law suit one time! i dont play that game anymore.

You can still tell your father about what that particular doctor did: they might still be friends.
Think about it - the doctor is still out there busy molesting very young girls and nobody knows about it.

My sister told me years later that he tried something like that with her too and she was lucky to escape.this man was later caught having sex with an underaged patient in his office.that one caused big trouble.his dental practice has collapsed. its only a matter of time before such snakes are exposed. this man was supposed to be a trusted friend of my dad. if nothing, ive learnt that if my underaged kids need medical attention i will NEVER EVER leave them alone in a doctors office by themselves and i mean that.

when a girl is young she dosent know how to tellsuch stories to adults so i dont blame her cos i was once in such a position.I think parents should encourage children to tell them when anyadult touches them in anyway that makes them scared.parents should also let children know parts of the body that are private and tell them not to allow anyone touch them and they shouldnt touch anybodys own no mater what the person says or gives to them cos i know some lousy men who promise to give sweets and biscuits
