The European Union which consists of 28 nations has slammed a massive $5 Billion fine against Google over the search giant’s Android operating system. The Google Android operating system has been the target of a long-running EU antitrust investigation, powers the over 80% of the world’s smartphones and firmly rules the mobile world. The fine comes just a year after Europe’s competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, also fined Google €2.4 billion ($2.8 billion) for favoring its own comparison-shopping service over those of its competitors—a fine it continues to appeal. The EU accused Google of taking advantage of the Android’s popularity to force device makers to install its search engine and the Google Chrome browser on phones, and to set Google Search as the default, as a condition for licensing some Google apps thereby cementing its dominant position and discouraging any competition.Meanwhile Google CEO Sundar Pichai has denied the charges and vowed to appeal the decision by the EU. He also warned that the Android OS may no longer be free. If this happens, then phone makers will have to pay for licencing of the Android OS which will inflate the price of smartphones in the market. But we don’t think it will come to that as he is planning to appeal the fine. This decision might be connected to President Donald Trump’s shock decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports.

E U is super broke and they need some cash to help cushion that fact, if i may ask what type of competitions are they talking about cos if i read clearly google owns android and they can set there search engine as default.

The problem for Google is that they want the benefit of what an open os provide without any of the strings that's attached with such OS. You fall under a different set of rules once you license an OS to third party instead of using such os yourself only.

Microsoft had to go through this, and it's a good thing the EU force microsoft hands back in the day or Google might not be around today. It's funny reading Google's response to this. They sang a different tune back when the EU went af. "The market favors open choice for search. We don't think it's right for Microsoft to just set the default to MSN. We believe users should choose." Google in May 2006.

Perhaps the move will birth the third awaited mobile OS. It's a pity beautiful and stable OS died viz BB10, windows 10 mobile, Meego..

Apple doesn't have an issue here because there's only.one phone that uses iOS which is iPhone. It's gonna be a big issue for Google and its users tho because so many apps uses chrome api to function.

Yeah time for Google to pay up. Microsoft has done so already, lazy Europeans.
