Orisheneye David Okorogheye

Fifteen year-old Orisheneye David Okorogheye, who made 9As in the 2018 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), has declared his intention to study neurosurgeon at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).Okorogheye, an indigene of Delta State, Warri North Local Government Area, was the cynosure of all eyes at the recent valedictory service of Starfield School, Iju, Lagos, where teachers, peers, friends and families celebrated him in grand style.

The unassuming lad also scored 332 in the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The breakdown of the result as released by the West African Examination council (WAEC) showed that he made A1 in Civic Education, English, Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer studies and Catering Craft Practice.

Also in the UTME he had 67 in English, 91 in Chemistry, 89 in Physics and 85 in Biology. With this outstanding result, Okorogheye told The Guardian that the fruitless effort of the doctors to save his sick father seven years ago, who eventually died, inspired his crave to go for the course.

“I was eight years then, we went to see my late dad in the hospital. Several thoughts wiggled through my mind then as I helplessly watch the doctors who couldn’t save him. Then I started nursing it in my mind, what it takes to save human life.

That was when the ambition to become a medical doctor started. So when I started reading and watching documentaries on scientists, animals and wildlife, I narrowed it to neurosurgeon. I decided that I would study hard to achieve my dream. Today, I’m glad with my performance so far in my journey to becoming a neurosurgeon.

He said his school’s Director of Studies, Mr. Chris Eigbe, his class teachers and mum, Mrs. Lilian Okorogheye, helped tremendously in helping him achieve the feat.“Also I was motivated by my school mate who made 9As in WASSCE last year.

Her name is Abioye Ikeoluwa. My mum too as a teacher, instilled the reading habit in me from childhood. When I was very little, she used to teach me to read, to study in order to succeed. Everyone around me encouraged me to work hard with our School director constantly reminding us of his target of recording more 9As this season. And because I read a lot I was flowing with the school’s reading plan.”

The highly elated Mr. Eigbe said there is no doubt that Okorogheye will be among kids that would stun the world in the coming years. He said his students have shown a bit of what they have up their sleeves with their performances. “Investing in human resources is our common goal.

It is a continuous process, and we are getting better by the year. We are always ready to prepare our students to fit into any environment. We subjected them to a dose of training and continuous assessment.

We made them to understand that they have the ability to make good grades. It is a project we believe in, that if a child has the right environment, that child will perform excellently well.

We want it to be a culture, with the right environment, good motivation for teachers and students, 9As is achievable, Eigbe said.On her part, Mrs. Okorogheye said, “I am so excited to receive the news from the school, I give God all the glory because I know it wasn’t easy.”

Good call kid. Death of a close family member can be a very strong motivating factor, particularly a parent
