419: Middle-aged woman bags 180 years

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has sentenced middle -aged woman, Ritchuko Taiwo Mcdavies (a.k.a Rosemary Olufunke Taiwo and Mama Jef) to 180 years imprisonment for obtaining N1.5m through false pretence (419).

Delivering judgment in the suit by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the convict, Justice Joseph Oyewole held that Mcdavies was guilty on count 2 to 19 and sentenced her to 10 years imprisonment on each of the count.

The judge also held that the EFCC had proved count 2 to 19 beyond reasonable doubt against the convict, saying that the jail term would run concurrently from November 8, 2005 when Mcdavis was arrested.

The EFCC had brought the convict to court in an amended 31-count charge and claimed that she conspired to obtain money by false pretence and engaged in forging of documents to obtain N1.5 m from some people to procure visa documents to Bangkok and Korea and for job placement in the said countries.

During proceedings, one of the victims, Mr. Jasper Madubugwu, told the court that when the convict told him she could arrange overseas travels to a number of countries, he spread the idea to 20 people who paid about N155,000 each through him.

He said, "Thereafter, she told me to prepare for the trip, I resigned my appointment as Personal Assistant to the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly and disposed off my household assets in the expectation."

They gave her 180 years but Bode was able to bag only 2[x12] years for a more heinous crime. Injustice to women at best.

if they gave that poor lady 180yrs for 1.5m NAIRAS, i wonder how much they would give the real thieves of 9ja? (if they ever came to trial)!
