This thread was first created 5 months ago but didn't get any attention from the moderators.
Seeing threads depicting how inhumane doctors and other health professionals are making headlines in recent days, I believe it will be fair to let people also see reasons why some doctors especially in private hospitals seem rigid and consider money first before service though it may not be totally justifiable. This is just one of many of such scenarios and many doctors experience this.
Here is the thread created in April
https://www.nairaland.com/4439253/reason-why-private-hospitals-termed

I’ll be very brief as much as possible
This patient was rushed into the hospital 7th August, 2017 by FRSC officials unconscious as he was involved in a road traffic accident, hospital located somewhere in Osun state
Without asking for any deposit, he was accepted and management commenced immediately
The following morning, the brothers showed up and demanded referral to an hospital in Ife for convenience sake because they reside in Ife
Patient was referred and bill incurred was given for relatives to pay
Brothers pleaded that they didn’t have much on them and they’d like to drop what they had and would come balance up before the ending of the month (August)
The elder of the two introduced himself as a lecturer (PhD holder) in OAU. He was even assuring me that he works with the federal govt with regular pay unlike his brother who works with the state, so payment is no problem at all
Out of respect and trust as they related so well and politely, I told them to just sign an undertaking and state when they would bring the balance
NB: the ideal procedure was to have sent them to the hospital MD who after engaging them in discussion and considered them for undertaking would direct them to the secretary for the undertaking which required a collateral. I cut corner for them with no collateral.
I was later queried the following day when the MD found out what I did and I just tried manage the situation
Fast-forward to August ending, no show from Mr lecturer and brother, they didn’t even make any contact at all
I contacted in September and he apologized and assured he would pay few days later
He kept giving new payment dates and was defaulting. He once chatted me up on whatsapp to apologize (screenshots below)
I called sometime in December , he recognized my voice and hanged up. I then called his younger brother who was the witness on the undertaking. That one was apologizing yet talking nonsense. He said I was supposed to understand as a Yoruba man. In fact he said I was not being compassionate (I have phone call audio evidence) because they are Christians (hospital name is Islam themed). Can you imagine?
I wanted to go to the lecturer’s department in OAU and report to the HOD but I didn’t have time
I left the hospital in January but still determined to ensure these ungrateful people pay (the hospital management in fact is not aware of this money owed)
I contacted Mr debturer last month and found out they still never paid. They thought I had forgotten about the money.
I gave him 3 days ultimatum to pay and I threatened to use the signed undertaking against him
I got a call from the patient himself (now fully recovered) 2 days after the ultimatum had lapsed apologizing and promising to pay within 7 days, it’s two weeks now, no payment.
They promised to pay within 3 weeks, it’s 8 months now!!!
I won’t go to d police station because of ₦15000 balance. I can however share his story with d world to let people know why private hospitals in Nigeria are termed wicked and inhuman. It’s because of their experiences with people like this shameless and irresponsible OAU lecturer.
Mr debturer, go and pay..

In Addendum
I last contacted them in April, and they still refused to pay as at then. I don't know if they have paid now though I doubt it.
I have however decided to let them be and not to contact them again to press on the payment. However subsequently, I'll ensure patients commit themselves financially first before service is rendered.

Op should help make this thread grace the front page

Why care what the public will think when their opinion cannot pay your bills as a doctor? Do your best and leave the rest for God.
