@ Pheeque: The free version does not have but we'll have to find a way to do things. Considering upload and download speeds based on most of our internet connections, it is evident that we would still be constrained even if it was present. The thing about tools like unity is that it allows you to do things easily. We can easily paste particular scripts right here and upload needed models for others to test on makeshift scenes. We don't always have to be viewing and working on the same things. Even better: We can actually export parts of our project files from unity and other people can install them to their projects as packages. Like worldbest said, we can use a something like sourceforge as our repository. We just have to ensure that we communicate frequently, update each other on progress and challenges and try to tackle things as best as we can.

PS: Did I come off in some bad way? Pardon my attitude if I've somehow offended you.

@ World best: That's a great collection. I just wish someone would do a tutorial on the arm ik and other technical stuff. I still haven't found a way to import the bones along with the mesh into blender so i can analyze it better. Do you know any good tutorial on texturing?

@Everyone: Please download this ebook on game development: http://directory.vancouver.wsu.edu/people/sue-peabody/art-computer-game-design . It's old but it's an highly regarded book and it's free. I believe it will help us greatly. Anyone with links to helpful stuff should not hesitate to post them here. Happy Independence day guys. Maybe this time next year, we'll be able to develop something that reflects the African struggle in a unique way.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(m): 6:48pm On Oct 01, 2010
@GA

Will download the book tonight. I dont know of any tutorial on texturing but i believe you can get them by doing a google search. I am still playing around with unity3d gui, not doing anything specific yet. It seems like you are having a really hard time with your actor/model, is it the animation? Have you asked for help from the community? Or maybe you are going about it the hard way. Waiting to see some breakthroughs from your end o.

@Everyone
At the moment, looks like its GameAddict and i who have downloaded Unity3D. Please lets all have our copies. Its not cool to indicate your interest and not follow us.

By d way? GA u be rapper b4? Lol

Cheers
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 7:58pm On Oct 01, 2010
@ World best: Why are you asking? I try to rap sometimes, lol,

The problem is that some of the unity projects concern technical stuff and contain many interlinked things. The only way to quickly understand them is knowing about serious physics and stuff like that. I usually try to remove parts that are not to wide and use them. Learning the arm ik and the car tutorials with my own models is proving difficult right now because of various complexities involved in them. You can't just model a car, attach a script and expect it to work. That is one of the biggest drawbacks in unity. You need things to be modeled in a particular way and set up appropriately. It makes things feel rigid and not having 3ds max makes it worse for me. I'm just trying to look at the structure of the models in inside unity and guess about thinks bu I haven't had much luck.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by Maximip(m): 11:17pm On Oct 01, 2010
@worldbest, @gameaddict

You guys are not alone. I've downloaded Unity 3d from the start. I'm just waiting for another phase of the project
since graphics, modelling , textures and animation is not my thing. I'll just end up wasting my time achieving nothing.

I understand the concept of 3d so when it's time for scripts and the artwork are in place, I'll be more involved.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(m): 2:47am On Oct 02, 2010
@Maxim

Great! Just continue to follow us here and in no time we will get to the scripting stage.

@GA:

The way you write, sounds like you about to drop a punchline, i rap too,

You can get 3ds max from ikeja. I hope you get through this in no time.

I dont know if you have seen this link before, http://answers.unity3d.com/ you can ask unity question there

i think i'll just do the same as maxim, when its time for scripting,i'd do what i can!
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 1:04pm On Oct 02, 2010
@ world best: nice, thanks.

@ Everyone: We should start analyzing the various areas of the game now so we can lay down how everything is going to work.

For example:

Protagonist : looks, behaviors, attributes, goals, etc. Some of this things have been defined to some extent when we picked our storyline. We just have to lay them out in a structured pattern.

Enemies/Henchmen : Looks, action patterns and states, attributes, groupings etc

Levels: Type of environment and setting, length, interactions, etc

Game in general: Genre- We could design it in various ways. If we go for the small adventure/fighter pattern, the player visits a small part of a level, has to fight off enemies, then is allowed to go to the next area in the level, fights again, etc This aspect will help us develop the game play.

Scripting : Representation of attributes, developing ways to allow interaction with things like triggers, tracking game objects etc.

Assets : 3d models, textures, sounds, etc
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(m): 10:18am On Oct 03, 2010
OK, here is what i got.
-------------------------------------------

LEVEL 1

Primary Mission :

1. Find a Job
2. Go on Sales/Search mission
3. Earn and raise tuition money

Game Environmental Features and Player Interaction

The environment for the level one should be a mixture of urban and rural. This depicts the financial state of the player according to the storyline in Page 2. So we will replicate the looks of our cities/towns in Nigeria, such as Ajegunle, Shitta etc.

Below are some of the details I came up with at the moment:

NOTE: [1] represents a legend for players interaction with Object/Effect/Character.

GAME ENVIRONMENT

1. Police and Check Points:

a) Bribes can be collected   [1]
b) Police aggression/assault  [2]
c) Arrest on suspicion of weapon possession etc [3]
d) Interrogations on source of merchandise [4]

2. Area Boys/Criminals:

a) Criminals/hoodlums trying to steal merchandise [5]
b)Criminals/hoodlums trying to extort money [6]
c) Criminals who just want to fight [7]
d)Gang fights in the streets [8]
e) Criminals/Troublemakers throwing insulting words [9]

3. People:

a) People and Women Talking [10]
b) Police chasing criminals  [11]
c) Robberies taking place
d) People queuing up
e) Students walking
f) Hawkers everywhere
g) Markets
h) Cars, Bikes, Keke Napep moving around

4. Structures:

a) Residential buildings with gutters/drainage (closed or opened)
b) Business Centers
c) Shops/Kiosks
d) Bridges
e) Schools
f) Brothels  [12]
e) Roads

5. Land Marks:

a) Bushes, Small/Large Forest
b) Rivers

Player Interaction:

[1]. Player encounters a police asking for bribe. He may decide to give him from his savings which he needs to pay for his fee, run or attack the police.
[2]. Player may decide to fight or run.
[3]. If player gets caught with weapons. He may be arrested and he may loose some money to the police
[4]. Player can tell a lie or he can give a bribe or he can just run off
[5]. Player can resist by fighting, running
[6]. Player can give money to the criminals, to avoid problems. He can also try to run, find a new way to pass.
[7]. Player has to fight back or still try to run
[8]. If he gets close, he may caught in the fighting frenzy
[9]. Player can also insult, then he may provoke them and then he has to fight them or pay them off
[10]. Player can ask for directions etc
[11]. Player can help police and get reward
[12]. Player can spend some money here.

These are some of the details I could think of for now. But we do not have to include everything though. We also need to plan how the map of our level will look like. I would suggest we study a Google Map of a Nigerian location, so we can have an idea of how to make the level, place houses , bridges, markets, forest/bushes, mission spots etc.

Like I said before, we don’t have to start with all the models, we should use stuffs like boxes, cylinders to represent some models till we have them. I am sure by the time we have a good looking level, we'll see good and serious modellers joining the team. We are being watched big time.

I will look at a Google Map and try to come up with a map for our first level as a suggestion. I think Maxim and  Pheeque can still play around with the engine, you need some level of understanding in other to work with the scripts. The GUI and the scripts work together(Thanks to unity3D for this).

Here is an ebook for unity3d scripting: http://download.unity3d.com/support/Tutorials/2%20-%20Scripting%20Tutorial.pdf
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 5:54pm On Oct 03, 2010
Nice. The things to be implemented are much though. It looks like there may be lots of interactions and we would have to set up a simple dialog system amongst other things. I've started making some plans on the level but I'll have to experiment a lot on the texturing aspect.

Re: Game Development: Join The Team by Pheeque(m): 10:14am On Oct 04, 2010
started learning unity scripting already.i guess we'd leave u guys 2 d game plan,ga nd worldbest.c u guys at d top,
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(m): 10:43am On Oct 04, 2010
@GA:

A simple dialog system will be needed, maybe it will be in the form of notes or we'll just prevent the player from entering inputs then toggle the camera to show their faces while they interact. I think there are plugins for this though. I am currently drawing up a map and at the same time learning blender. I will post what i have done later today.

@Pheeque
Very cool of you. We'll do our best with the game plan and yes see you at the top bro.

Cheers

i cant activate my vbag emulator,

Can u guys help me?.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 2:26pm On Oct 08, 2010
Hi guys. I'm still trying to figure out the texturing aspect and other things. I won't be able to do much this weekend and next week because I have to go to school for registration and other things. Hope you guys are having fun with unity, I had a look at the scripts in the project file I uploaded and noticed most of the variables were declared private instead of public and the walk speed was low. Anyone who downloaded it should change it to make things easier.

Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 10:51pm On Oct 15, 2010
Hi guys, Still trying to complete my registration. God willing, I'll be done next week. I've finally gotten a way rotate bones somewhat. It's not as great as the arm IK script but it works to some extent. Hope you guys are having fun.

@Ojukwu24 : The project is still on, as long as everyone can keep working and contributing. We need to work harder and plan better.

The discussion on this threads start in June 20 and today's is October 21!
I am particularly glad that some people are committed to this noble project while others are not(may be due to PHCN,Internet bandwith,etc).I do not have skill sets in any of the tools but I can really stand in as a moderator,making sure people are committed to this project and timelines and also act as a project moderator.
GA-thanks for your unrepentant commitment and words of encouragement & advice so far.

Re: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(m): 2:11pm On Oct 21, 2010
@GraphMoney

welcome to the team. We are always happy to have people who will contribute and not just view pages.

I believe the reason for the slow progress is as as a result of the factors pointed out by Graphmoney(for me its time and bandwidth). I also think the lack of leadership role in the team is another reason. Atleast, we need someone to do the bossing around thing.

I think we have a great engine to work with. I have a demo map that i sketched, i am currently trying to understand terrains,skyboxes. By the time i am ok learning, i will attempt to implement my map in Unity after which i will use primitives like spheres to act as placeholders to buildings.

Cheers.

When i am done, will post screenies for every to see and i will upload the files. I cannot tell when precisely,but i am working on it.

@GA: where you at? Hope ur registration is going well.

I will post an image the map i sketched for this level later. So any1 can work on it too or make changes.
